Retry only the URLs that failed, not the whole batch. Save each URL’s result as it completes, classify failures using the screenshot provider’s error details, and retry only errors that may be temporary—with a maximum attempt count and a recorded outcome. This prevents successful captures from being needlessly repeated and makes the final batch auditable.
Track completion per URL
A batch is a collection of individual capture work items. Keep each URL’s state separate from the scheduler’s state for the overall job. A minimal record should include:
- Input: the submitted URL and, if relevant, a stable item ID.
- Status: pending, running, succeeded, or failed.
- Attempts: how many capture attempts have started.
- Timestamps: when the item was attempted and when its latest result was recorded.
- Last error: the provider or browser’s error code and a useful message.
- Output: the screenshot location or other success result.
Persist a URL’s success as soon as it is complete. If the process stops or another URL fails, resume from the stored item states rather than recapturing every successful URL. This is an application design recommendation, not a guarantee built into every screenshot service or job scheduler.
Decide what to retry
Do not treat every failed capture as temporary. Use the error information returned by your specific browser library or screenshot API; there is no universal retryable-status list established across providers.

- Potentially transient: retry only when the provider’s documented error or your own operational rules indicate the failure may clear on another attempt.
- Likely persistent: invalid URLs, continuing access denial, or application-level errors generally need correction or investigation rather than blind repetition.
- Unknown: record the error and inspect it. Avoid turning an unclassified failure into an unlimited retry loop.
Choose a maximum attempt count and a delay policy appropriate to your service and workload. The sources available here do not establish one correct delay, error mapping, or HTTP status policy for all screenshot implementations. Store the policy with the job configuration so operators can tell why an item was retried.
Retry the URL or retry the job?
An application-level retry targets one failed URL. A scheduler-level retry restarts a failed job attempt and can repeat already-completed work unless the batch persists per-URL completion state. Prefer the URL as the retry unit when your application can safely resume individual items.

Scheduler semantics are product-specific. For example, AWS Batch’s retry strategy supports configuring between 1 and 10 job attempts; its guide says jobs are attempted once by default. AWS Batch’s timeout guidance says a job terminated because of timeout is not retried. Do not assume these rules apply to another scheduler.
Keep capture failures separate from visual mismatches
A failed navigation or screenshot operation is not the same as a screenshot that rendered successfully but differs from an expected image. Playwright’s visual screenshot assertion behavior is specifically for visual comparison: it waits until two consecutive page screenshots match, then compares the last capture with the expectation. When screenshot results are compared against baselines, keep the rendering environment consistent. Playwright notes that output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Pin or otherwise control those conditions when consistency matters; retrying alone cannot fix a mismatch caused by a changed environment.
Implement a bounded retry loop
- Load the manifest: read the saved state for every submitted URL.
- Select work: process pending items and failed items that are classified as retryable and remain below the attempt limit. Leave successful items untouched.
- Record before capture: increment the attempt count and mark the item running before starting the capture.
- Capture and persist: save the output and mark the item succeeded immediately after a successful result.
- Handle failure: store the error, timestamp, and failed status. Schedule another attempt only if the error qualifies under your provider-specific policy and the cap is not reached.
- Write a final manifest: report successful and failed URLs, attempt counts, and the last error for each remaining failure.
Make the state update durable enough for your workload: if the worker exits between capturing a screenshot and recording success, the item may be repeated. Where duplicate capture has a cost or side effect, check whether the chosen API offers an idempotency mechanism and document that behavior; it is not established universally.

Diagnose failures without losing evidence
Keep the original error details rather than replacing them with a generic “capture failed” message. Useful diagnostics include the URL or item ID, attempt number, timestamp, provider response or browser error, and whether the failure happened during navigation, rendering, or output delivery. Avoid logging credentials or sensitive query values embedded in URLs.
Playwright TestInfo exposes whether a test was retried and supports attaching screenshot content or files to test results. Attach diagnostics when useful, then retain a final per-URL manifest so the batch can be reviewed independently of transient worker logs.

Common retry problems
- Successful URLs run again after a job restart: the application is tracking only whole-job status. Persist success per URL and skip completed items on resume.
- The same URL retries forever: enforce a maximum attempt count and stop automatic retries for errors classified as persistent or unknown.
- A scheduler retry duplicates work: scheduler-level retries rerun the job, not necessarily just the failed item. Resume from per-URL checkpoints.
- A timed-out AWS Batch job does not restart: AWS Batch documents that a timeout-terminated job is not retried under its timeout guidance. Handle timeout recovery at the application level if that is the desired behavior.
- Retries continue but the image still differs: determine whether the capture failed or the image assertion failed. For visual comparisons, check that the browser and host environment match the baseline conditions.
- The error does not identify a safe retry: consult the specific provider’s documentation or classify it for manual review. Do not infer a universal retry rule from the fact that a URL failed.
