Live streaming gives a business a real-time way to demonstrate a product, teach customers, answer questions, and invite people to take a next step. It can make those interactions possible, but it does not guarantee more reach, sales, or conversions. To get started, choose a clear event goal, use a platform your audience can access, plan a short run of show, and test the video and sound before you go live.
What a business livestream can do
A live session creates a place for viewers to watch and, depending on the platform and format, interact through chat or event features. A business might use one to:
- Demonstrate how a product works and answer questions as they come up.
- Teach customers how to use a service or complete a task.
- Host a community conversation, product announcement, or customer training.
- Invite viewers to register for an event, request information, or follow up using a clearly stated next step.
These are practical uses of live video, not evidence of a guaranteed business result. Choose a measure that matches the goal—such as relevant questions for a Q&A, registrations for an event, or qualified inquiries after a demo—rather than assuming views alone indicate success.
Choose YouTube Live or LinkedIn Live
There is no supported universal winner between the two. Choose based on where your intended audience can be reached, what event workflow you need, and what your team can produce reliably.

| Decision point | YouTube Live | LinkedIn Live |
|---|---|---|
| Access | The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, according to YouTube Help. | Eligible members and Pages may broadcast to a profile, Page, or Event; confirm the account’s eligibility with LinkedIn Help. |
| Broadcast workflow | Methods include mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. The method you choose determines how much production control you have. | Requires a third-party streaming tool; it is not a direct in-platform camera broadcast. |
| Event workflow | Choose a live method and configure the stream or event for that method. | Events must be scheduled ahead. LinkedIn’s overview says spontaneous live access ended June 22, 2026; a team may schedule shortly before going live. |
| Production fit | A phone or webcam can suit a simple session; an encoder supports a more controlled production with external gear and overlays. | Plan to connect an external broadcast tool and link its output to the LinkedIn event through Live Studio. |
| After the event | Check the selected method’s recording and replay options before relying on a downloadable copy. | Check the broadcast tool’s recording capabilities; LinkedIn recommends sharing highlights and follow-up resources. |
For LinkedIn, the five-step workflow described by LinkedIn Marketing Solutions is to choose a broadcast tool, connect it, create the event, connect the broadcast in Live Studio, and go live. Its page names Restream, Socialive, StreamYard, and Switcher Studio among preferred options; that list can change and is not proof of endorsement or availability in every region.
Plan the event before choosing equipment
Set one objective and one next step
Write the purpose in one sentence: for example, “Show customers how to set up the device and answer setup questions.” Decide what viewers should do afterward, such as consult a help page or register for a follow-up session. Keep the invitation relevant to the event rather than promising an outcome the stream cannot guarantee.

Draft a short run of show
- Opening: Welcome viewers, identify the host, and explain what the session will cover.
- Core segment: Teach, demonstrate, or discuss the main topic in a clear sequence.
- Questions: Reserve time for audience questions; have a moderator monitor comments for a more involved event.
- Next step: State where viewers can find promised resources or how to continue the conversation.
Schedule, promote, and assign roles
Confirm the title, description, time, speakers, and whether registration is part of the event. LinkedIn Marketing Solutions recommends setting up an event 2–4 weeks ahead and inviting your network; treat that as LinkedIn’s planning guidance, not a proven performance threshold. Assign a host to present and, when useful, a moderator to watch comments and flag unanswered questions.
Start with the equipment you have
A phone or computer webcam may be enough for a straightforward first session. YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A webcam is a simple computer-based route; encoder setups can use external cameras, microphones, or preamps. Buy gear only to address a real limitation.

YouTube Live
After confirming the channel meets YouTube’s access requirements, choose the method that suits the event: mobile for a quick update, webcam for a simple computer stream, or an encoder for more production control. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not universal requirements for every platform.

LinkedIn Live
First confirm eligibility and schedule the event, then connect the chosen third-party tool and its broadcast in Live Studio. Those are LinkedIn’s recommendations, not independently established thresholds for audience growth or retention.
Run a rehearsal
- Where the platform permits, use a private or unlisted practice stream.
- Check framing, lighting, voice level, connection stability, slides, and overlays.
- Confirm event access, speaker roles, and who will monitor comments.
- If using an encoder, verify the preview and event accessibility, check any local recording, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Know what you will do if the connection or equipment fails, such as telling viewers where to find an update.
Follow up and learn from the event
After the session, answer questions you did not get to, send promised resources, and share a recording or selected highlights if your tool makes them available to download. Review the measures tied to your original objective: registrations and attendance for an event, useful questions for a Q&A, qualified inquiries for a product demonstration, or replay use when the recording is available. These are practical measurement choices, not published benchmarks.
