With Playwright, the basic flow is to install Argos’s Playwright integration, configure its reporter, navigate to a localized route, wait for your app and fonts to be ready, then call argosScreenshot. The same capture code is not universal across runners; use the integration documentation for your runner.
Plan the language and script coverage
“Indian language” does not describe one rendering case. The W3C’s 2020 Indic Layout Requirements reports 22 constitutionally recognized languages and 12 scripts, and notes that the relationship between languages and scripts is complex: one script may serve several languages, and one language may be written in more than one script. The document is a Working Draft focused largely on Devanagari, not a complete layout guide for every script.
Start from your product’s actual support commitments, not a generic list of languages. Record the locale, script, route, and UI states that matter, then choose representative pages that expose likely visual problems.
- A text-dense page, to check glyph shaping and paragraph wrapping.
- Navigation and buttons, where narrow labels may clip or wrap unexpectedly.
- A narrow viewport, to expose changes in line breaks and component height.
- A form with validation or error text, where localized strings may be longer.
- Any component with script-specific layout, punctuation, or line-breaking concerns.
This is a practical sampling strategy, not a prescribed W3C test matrix. A pixel comparison can reveal visual differences, but it cannot determine whether translated content or language-specific typography is correct; have a reviewer who knows the language inspect important diffs.

Set up Argos with Playwright
Argos’s Playwright guide describes a CLI and @argos-ci/playwright integration, a Playwright reporter, and an argosScreenshot call in a browser test. Its walkthrough includes GitHub Actions, but reporter and upload details should match your repository’s CI provider, branch rules, retries, and sharding. Check the current Argos quickstart and Playwright integration documentation before copying package versions or configuration: SDK and CI details can change.
The essential test pattern is a stable screenshot name and the localized route your application actually serves. This example illustrates the capture call; it does not replace the current reporter, CLI, and CI setup in Argos’s docs.

});Use names that identify the route and locale, such as home-hi or checkout-ta. If the site selects locale through a cookie, account setting, or application state rather than the URL, establish that state in the test before capturing. A locale label in the screenshot name makes reviews easier; it does not itself change the page language.

Make font loading and Indic shaping deterministic
Capture only after the intended web font is active. If the browser takes the screenshot while a fallback font is still being used, glyph widths and shapes can differ, changing line breaks, text wrapping, and component height. Argos’s stabilization guidance identifies late-loading fonts and resources as sources of unstable screenshots.
Unicode’s Indic Scripts and Languages FAQ explains the need for suitable font coverage and shaping support, and names Noto fonts as covering Indic scripts. It also gives platform examples including Nirmala UI, Latha, Mangal, Raavi, Shruti, and Tunga; those are examples, not fonts guaranteed to exist in every CI image. Unicode Standard 18.0.0 describes Indic scripts as abugidas and explains the role of the virama as a combining character whose form varies by script (Chapter 12, South and Central Asia-I).
- Verify that the CI browser can fetch the same font assets the site intends to use.
- Check that the selected font covers the script and glyphs present in your test strings.
- Wait for fonts before capture; a family name in CSS does not prove that the font loaded.
- Inspect representative strings in the target script rather than treating a Latin-language screenshot as a proxy.
Do not apply letter spacing as a generic fix for Indic text. Diagnose font coverage, shaping, line breaks, and script-appropriate layout first; spacing behavior can depend on the script and component.

Wait for a stable page state
Argos documents that its screenshot helper waits for resources such as fonts and images, network idle, and removal of loading states marked with [aria-busy]. It also discusses stable test data and animation. Those waits help with common sources of flakiness, but they cannot know when every application-specific asynchronous render is complete.
- Navigate to the localized route or establish the site’s locale state.
- Wait for an app-specific ready signal if the page renders localized content asynchronously.
- Ensure the intended font is loaded and any relevant images or data have settled.
- Control dynamic content such as timestamps, rotating content, or personalized values; use masks only for genuinely irrelevant regions and preserve the layout being tested.
- Settle or disable animations where they make captures inconsistent, then call
argosScreenshot. - Review the resulting comparison and inspect unexpected diffs in context.
Standardize the CI browser and capture environment so comparisons are made like-for-like. Browser, operating-system, and font-rendering differences can introduce noise; a visual-testing workflow does not guarantee identical pixels across machines.

Choose locale handling for your runner
Locale setup belongs to the application test or runner integration, not to a universal Argos locale switch. With Playwright, visit the localized URL or set the locale through the site’s own state mechanism. Argos’s Storybook material describes locale modes alongside viewport and theme variants, which can capture variants without duplicating a story definition; see the Argos product information and current documentation for the relevant setup.

Confirm the current package configuration for whichever runner you use instead of copying Playwright reporter or SDK code into another integration.
Troubleshoot misleading diffs
- Indic text suddenly changes shape or width: Check whether the intended font loaded in CI and supports the script. Wait for fonts and compare the rendered page against a known supported font configuration.
- Paragraphs or buttons wrap differently: Inspect font fallback, viewport size, and the localized text actually rendered. A fallback font can change widths and heights even when the text content is unchanged.
- Only some captures are unstable: Look for asynchronous app rendering, changing test data, animations, or resources that have not settled. Add an app-specific readiness wait rather than relying on a generic delay alone.
- A locale screenshot shows the default language: Verify the test navigates to the localized route or establishes the locale cookie, account setting, or app state before capture. Renaming the screenshot does not select a locale.
- CI differs from a developer machine: Standardize the browser and environment, and verify the CI image has access to the intended font files. Do not assume desktop fonts are installed in CI.
- Reporter or upload behavior is wrong: Recheck the current Argos setup for your runner and CI provider, including branch, pull-request, retry, or shard behavior. The Playwright pattern is not a universal CI configuration.
- A diff looks visually acceptable but language quality is uncertain: Ask a language-competent reviewer to check shaping, punctuation, line breaks, clipping, and text content. Pixel comparison alone cannot validate linguistic correctness.

No. A screenshot comparison can surface visual changes, but a language-competent reviewer must validate wording and script-specific presentation.
Does Argos automatically select every Indian-language locale in Playwright?
The Playwright flow shown here uses the site’s localized route or state. Argos describes locale modes for Storybook; Playwright locale selection should be implemented through the application or test setup.
