Streamlabs Talk Studio is a browser-based studio for live streaming and recording with guests, screen sharing, and other on-screen sources. You can set it up without installing the studio app: connect a destination, choose your camera and microphone, arrange what viewers see, then select Go Live. Its plan limits differ by tier, and the current Pro guest limit conflicts with an older Streamlabs setup guide, so check the current plan page before subscribing.
What is Streamlabs Talk Studio?
Streamlabs describes Talk Studio as a web-based live-streaming and recording studio. It lets a host invite guests, share a screen, and go live or record from a browser. The studio does not require installation; Streamlabs lists Google Chrome and Safari as browser requirements. A stable connection is important, and the getting-started guide recommends Ethernet where possible.
Talk Studio is intended for productions assembled from browser sources such as cameras, guests, screen shares, and media. It is not necessary to have a webcam: Streamlabs documents a stream avatar option for hosts without one. The product is distinct from a service that continuously loops uploaded videos to keep a channel live; Talk Studio is used to produce a live session or recording.
What can you do with Talk Studio?
- Bring in guests: invite people by copying or emailing a link, then decide when they appear on air.
- Share a screen and arrange sources: add cameras, guests, screen shares, or media, then choose which sources to show.
- Stream to configured destinations: connect destinations in account settings and select them when going live.
- Record: choose cloud recording or local recording options, with different outputs and retention considerations.
- Style the broadcast: the getting-started guide documents branding, styles, banners, tickers, virtual backgrounds, blur, intro and outro video, and a teleprompter.
- Use production controls: documented controls include chat, scheduling, settings, and integrated apps.

There is a guest-count discrepancy worth noting: the current plans page lists Pro at up to 11 guests, while Streamlabs’ getting-started guide says Pro allows up to 24 guests, with 15 on screen. Treat 11 as the current plan-page figure, not a settled guarantee across all versions of the documentation; verify the offer with Streamlabs if guest capacity is decisive.
The plan page also advertises a seven-day free trial, says Pro is included with Streamlabs Ultra, and states that paid features remain available until the end of the paid billing period after cancellation. These terms may change, so confirm them on the current plans page.

How to set up and use Talk Studio
1. Open the studio and configure your inputs
- Open Talk Studio in Google Chrome or Safari; the getting-started guide says installation is not required.
- Create or sign in with a Streamlabs ID.
- When prompted, grant the browser permission to use your camera and microphone. Select the intended audio and video inputs in the studio. If you do not have a webcam, Streamlabs documents using a stream avatar instead.
- Use a stable internet connection. Streamlabs’ 2023 getting-started guide lists 5 Mbps upload as a minimum connection figure and recommends Ethernet where possible.
2. Add a streaming destination
- In Talk Studio, open Profile Picture → Account Settings → Destinations → Add Destination.
- Choose a destination and follow its connection prompts. A platform may have requirements of its own, so complete any setup it requests rather than assuming every destination works the same way.
3. Build the scene
- In the editor, select a camera, guest, screen share, or media source from the left panel.
- Choose Show on stream for sources that should appear in the broadcast. Use Hide on stream to keep a source off air.
- Add and arrange sources to use different layouts. Check the preview before going live, especially after changing a source or layout.
4. Invite and admit guests
- Select Add Guest and copy or email the invitation link.
- When a guest joins, they wait in the Queue. Move them to Show on stream when you are ready to bring them into the production.
- Do not assume a queued guest is audible: Streamlabs’ guide says the guest microphone is not heard before the host moves the guest to the show area.
The plan page currently lists up to five guests for Standard and 11 for Pro. The getting-started guide gives a conflicting Pro figure of up to 24 guests, with 15 on screen; confirm the limit with Streamlabs if your show depends on more than the plan-page figure.
5. Choose recording options if needed
- Open Settings → Output and enable the recording options you need.
- Cloud Recording provides a complete recording and an audio-only downloadable file. Local Recording provides separate audio and video tracks per participant.
- Enable only the options you expect to use; Streamlabs advises this to avoid unnecessary computer load. Local recording is unavailable on mobile devices, and Streamlabs’ local-recording guide says the computer needs at least 5 GB of free space.
- Download recordings you want to keep before their retention period ends. Streamlabs says older recordings are automatically deleted after the applicable period: the latest 15 recordings are retained for 3 days on Free, 15 days on Standard, and 30 days on Pro. Keeping a downloaded copy on an external drive is Streamlabs’ preservation suggestion, not a Talk Studio requirement.
The recording guide separately describes Standard recordings as lasting up to four hours per session and Pro recordings up to ten hours per session. At the limit, the recording stops while the live broadcast may continue.

6. Start and properly end the broadcast
- Select Go Live, choose the configured destinations, and enter the requested platform details, such as the title and description.
- Review the selected destination and sources, then start the broadcast.
- When finished, use End Stream. Streamlabs warns that failing to end the stream this way can leave it online; simply closing the browser window is not the instructed stop procedure.
How much upload speed do you need?
Streamlabs’ 2023 getting-started guide gives these connection figures. They are guide recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection will sustain a broadcast; other traffic and network stability also matter.
| Target output | Upload speed listed as required | Upload speed listed as recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p | 10 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
The same 2023 guide lists 5 Mbps upload as the minimum connection figure. If a broadcast is unstable, lower the target resolution or address the network connection before adding more sources.

Common problems and fixes
- Camera or microphone is missing: check that the browser has camera and microphone permission, then select the intended device as the studio input. Close other apps that may be using the device if it remains unavailable.
- A guest has joined but viewers cannot hear them: check whether the guest is still in the Queue. Move them to Show on stream; Streamlabs says queued guests’ microphones are not audible before that step.
- A destination is unavailable or will not connect: revisit Profile Picture → Account Settings → Destinations and complete the destination’s prompts. Check the platform’s own requirements, which may differ by destination.
- The stream is unstable at the chosen resolution: compare the connection with Streamlabs’ 2023 upload figures above, prefer Ethernet if possible, and try a lower output resolution.
- A recording stops but the live show continues: check the plan’s session limit. The recording guide says recording stops at the four-hour Standard or ten-hour Pro limit while the broadcast may keep running.
- A recording has disappeared: check its age against the plan’s retention period. Streamlabs says recordings are automatically deleted after that window; download important files in advance.
- The broadcast still appears live after you leave: return to the studio if possible and use End Stream. Streamlabs cautions against treating browser closure as the stop action.
