Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA white screenshot is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have compatible major versions, set an explicit viewport, and wait for the page element you need—not just navigation completion. Then compare the live DOM and browser logs with the image: if the page content is missing, investigate loading or site behavior; if the content is present but the image is white, focus on capture and rendering.
Diagnose whether the page or the screenshot is blank
A screenshot alone cannot tell you whether Chrome failed to render the page, the application failed to load, or the capture happened too early. Gather evidence from the browser session immediately before taking the screenshot.
- Record the Selenium, Chrome, and ChromeDriver versions, the operating system or container, and the exact Chrome arguments.
- Check the current URL, page title,
document.readyState, body text, and visibility of the page-specific element you expect. - Review browser console and driver logs for navigation, script, or resource errors.
- Check the screenshot’s dimensions and compare its contents with the DOM evidence.
If the expected element is absent or the DOM is empty, troubleshoot navigation, scripts, resources, or site-specific behavior. If the expected content is present in the DOM but the screenshot is white, investigate the capture and rendering setup instead. Chrome’s headless documentation also describes dumping the DOM for inspection: Headless Chrome.
Fix the common Selenium and headless Chrome causes
1. Match Chrome and ChromeDriver
Confirm that Chrome and ChromeDriver match at the major-version level, as required by Selenium’s Chrome guidance. Do not assume updating Chrome also updated the driver. If the major versions differ, install or pin a compatible pair, then rerun the same capture. See Selenium’s Chrome-specific documentation.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Set a deliberate viewport
Choose a concrete window size that matches the layout you intend to capture. A narrow viewport can trigger a different responsive layout, and headless sessions should not depend on window maximization behaving like a visible desktop browser. Chrome’s headless screenshot examples use an explicit --window-size argument: Headless Chrome.
3. Use a supported headless argument
Selenium lists --headless=new among commonly used Chrome arguments. Test with the exact installed browser and the argument you intend to run; do not treat old headless flags or workarounds found online as universal fixes. Selenium’s list of Chrome arguments is at Chrome-specific functionality.

4. Wait for the application, not just navigation
WebDriver’s normal navigation wait targets document.readyState complete. That does not guarantee a JavaScript single-page application has finished rendering dynamic content. Wait for the actual element or state that proves the page is ready for capture. Selenium explains navigation waits and readiness in Browser Options.
5. Separate a general browser problem from a site-specific one
Try the same setup with a simple known page, then with the target site. Change one setting at a time—such as the viewport, headless argument, or readiness condition—and keep the smallest reproducer. A Selenium issue reports a white-screen symptom in headless mode, but an issue report does not establish a fix that applies to every environment: SeleniumHQ issue #14544.

Capture a screenshot with an explicit viewport and readiness check
This Python example uses Selenium 4-style APIs. Replace the URL and selector with the page and visible element that matter to your test. The viewport and selector are deliberate: navigation completing is not enough for many dynamic applications.
- Install Selenium with
python -m pip install seleniumand ensure Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions. - Save the script below as
capture.py, changetarget_urlandready_selector, then runpython capture.py. - If it times out, inspect the URL and logs and confirm that the selector exists and becomes visible in the page you actually reached.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
target_url = "https://example.com"
ready_selector = "main"
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,1000")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get(target_url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 30).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, ready_selector))
)
print("URL:", driver.current_url)
print("Title:", driver.title)
print("Ready state:", driver.execute_script("return document.readyState"))
print("Body:", driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "body").text[:1000])
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Remove the leading spaces before target_url, ready_selector, and the top-level options lines if your editor copied them as indentation; Python requires those statements to start at the left margin. The statements inside try and finally remain indented.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Expected page element is absent | Navigation, page scripts, resources, or site-specific behavior | Check current URL, body text, console and driver logs; verify the selector is correct. |
| DOM has expected content but screenshot is white | Capture or headless rendering configuration | Confirm screenshot dimensions, explicit viewport, and the exact headless argument; reproduce with a simple page. |
| Capture works on a simple page, not the target | Target-site loading or application state | Wait for a target-specific visible element and inspect script or resource errors. |
| Results change after a browser update | Chrome and ChromeDriver compatibility | Record both versions and confirm their major versions match. |
| Screenshot has an unexpected layout | Viewport or responsive breakpoint | Set a window size appropriate to the intended layout rather than relying on maximize behavior. |
