If your YouTube podcast stream stopped working after an OBS Studio update, first check whether OBS itself is failing to launch or behave normally. If OBS works but the stream disconnects or drops frames, troubleshoot the connection and bitrate instead. An update alone does not prove that your stream key or YouTube event is at fault.
Identify what stopped working
Use the symptom to choose a troubleshooting path; an OBS update issue, an unstable stream connection, and viewer buffering are different problems.
| What you see | What it points to | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not open, settings appear unavailable, or controls behave abnormally immediately after updating | A local application or system issue may have interfered with the update. | Check security software and the OBS installation. |
| OBS runs, but its dropped-frames indicator rises or the stream disconnects | The connection to the streaming service’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. | Check server selection, bitrate, network settings, and your connection. |
| OBS reports no dropped frames, but some viewers see buffering | Playback may be affected by viewers’ locations, devices, or internet connections. | Review the stream’s bitrate and resolution for your intended audience. |
| OBS appears connected, but the YouTube event is not live | The OBS-side checks do not establish whether the event, stream key, account, or YouTube control-room settings are correct. | Check the active event and YouTube’s current live control room instructions. |
If OBS stopped working after the update
The OBS Project Help Portal says updates should leave settings intact, but something else on the system can interfere with the update process. Its FAQ points to security software as one possible cause: a security product may treat an updated executable as a new program, even if OBS was allowlisted before.
- Open the security software you use and check whether OBS or its installation folder is blocked, quarantined, or no longer allowlisted.
- If OBS was already allowlisted, check whether the security product requires its executable files to be removed from the allowlist and added again after an update.
- Test a suspected security or firewall conflict only temporarily. If the test identifies it as the cause, add an appropriate OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security disabled.
- If OBS opens but your basic streaming configuration needs review, use Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard. The OBS FAQ says it can get most basic settings correct; it is a starting point, not a guarantee that every podcast setup or YouTube event is configured properly.
The OBS Project describes OBS as free, open-source software under GPLv2, with no watermarks or usage limitations in its FAQ. You do not need to buy replacement streaming software simply because an update caused a problem.

If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting
OBS does not operate its own streaming servers. Your computer connects directly to the service, such as YouTube, and dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends working through these checks. Its suggested bitrate percentage is a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Try another available server. In Settings → Stream, test a different server if the service offers a choice. Trying another streaming service can be a diagnostic to see whether the problem is service-specific; it is not a required permanent change.
- Lower the video bitrate. In Settings → Output, reduce the bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain consistently. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. That is operational guidance, not a promise that the stream will be stable at that percentage. Leave headroom for other devices and activity using the same connection.
- Review network options. In Settings → Advanced → Network, check network optimizations and TCP pacing (Windows only), and make sure Bind to IP is set to Default. You can test IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. Dynamic bitrate is a beta option that can lower bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and may reduce stream quality.
- Check software that can interfere. VPNs, security or firewall software, network “optimization” tools, and outdated network drivers can contribute to connection trouble. Test suspected software carefully; if an exception resolves the issue, restore protection with an OBS exception rather than leaving the security tool turned off.
- Test a wired connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet and see whether the dropped-frame behavior changes. This helps distinguish a wireless stability problem from other causes. Buy a cable only if you do not already have a suitable one or have identified a cable fault.
- Restart existing network equipment. Restart the modem and router for general connectivity trouble. Routers, modems, cables, network cards, switches, and extenders can fail, but do not replace equipment just because OBS drops frames. If the checks do not solve the issue, contact your internet provider before replacing hardware if you are unsure.
If viewers see buffering but OBS does not drop frames
Viewer buffering is not the same as OBS dropping frames. A stream can reach the service without OBS reporting dropped frames while particular viewers still have trouble playing it. Their location, device, and internet connection can affect playback. The OBS Project’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, dated June 9, 2021, recommends staying within the platform’s recommendations and lowering bitrate or resolution when that better serves the intended audience.

Use the OBS dropped-frames indicator as one clue, not a complete report of every viewer’s experience. If buffering affects a substantial part of your audience, test a lower bitrate or resolution and consider the devices and connections your podcast viewers are likely to use.
When OBS connects but YouTube is not live
The OBS connection and update guidance does not confirm that a particular YouTube live event, stream key, account state, or control-room setting is correct. If OBS appears to connect but the event does not appear live, check that you selected the intended active event and follow YouTube’s current live control room instructions. Do not assume that the update invalidated the stream key.
