Choose merch sizes by publishing product-specific measurements, labeling clearly whether they describe the wearer or the finished garment, and explaining how to use them. A letter size alone—S, M, or L—does not tell shoppers enough to make a reliable choice.
Start with the right kind of size chart
A body chart lists wearer measurements associated with each size. A garment chart lists dimensions of the finished item, including the room and shape built into its cut. Label the chart plainly as body measurements or garment measurements; the two are not interchangeable. UNIQLO’s measurement guide explains that shoppers should use body measurements with a body chart and compare a finished-garment chart with a similar item they own—not directly with their body.
- Use a body chart when shoppers can measure themselves and you want them to select a size from their body dimensions.
- Use a garment chart when shoppers can compare the item with clothing they already own and like the fit of.
- Offer both when practical. Use corresponding points and explain how body measurements relate to the garment’s intended room and fit.
Shopify’s size-chart guidance recommends choosing the chart type and measurement points to suit the product, rather than relying on a generic label.
Collect measurements for each product and size
If you resell apparel, ask the supplier for the chart for the specific product. If you make the merch, measure the relevant body or sample and the finished garments across every style and size. Do not assume one design’s measurements apply to another: cut, fabric, and silhouette affect the result.

Choose points that explain how each product fits. Shopify’s examples include:
- T-shirts and other knit tops: chest or bust, shoulder, body length, and sleeve.
- Dresses: bust, waist, hip, and length; shoulder may also matter.
- Pants: waist, hip, rise, thigh, inseam, and leg opening.
Include only measurements you can define and collect consistently. Use the supplier’s method and labels if you are reselling, and make sure the chart’s instructions match how its numbers were taken.

Explain how to measure and compare
For a body-measurement chart
Tell shoppers which body points to measure and where to place the tape. A flexible measuring tape is useful but optional. Keep the instructions aligned with the chart: for example, a chest measurement taken around the body is not the same as a flat, side-to-side garment width.
For a finished-garment chart
Ask shoppers to lay a similar garment flat and measure matching points. Biz Collection’s size guide describes a half-chest method; Angel’s support guide suggests measuring a well-fitting shirt or sweatshirt from side to side below the sleeve join and comparing that width with the chart. Follow the method that matches your chart’s labels rather than mixing methods.

Describe the intended fit and handle between sizes
Pair measurements with a useful fit description, such as fitted, regular, or easy, and provide product-specific notes where you have reliable information. Biz Collection distinguishes fit labels including fitted, semi-fitted, easy, tailored, and regular. Such terms help explain the silhouette but do not replace measurements.
There is no dependable universal dimension for “Medium,” even across products from the same brand. UNIQLO notes that product measurements can vary with design, fit, and fabric, and advises shoppers to use each item’s own chart. If a shopper falls between sizes, recommend a size only when that product’s construction and fit information supports the advice; avoid a blanket “size up” or “size down” rule.

Production tolerances are also product- and seller-specific. Angel states that its products may vary by up to 1/2 inch in either direction; UNIQLO gives product-specific variation of approximately 1–2 cm, with a different range for belts. These are disclosures from those retailers, not general apparel standards. Use your own supplier’s or production team’s information if you publish a tolerance.

Use units consistently and choose a default that suits your store’s primary market. Where useful for an international audience, show both units or provide a clear toggle. Put the chart where shoppers can find it while viewing the relevant product, and make sure each chart is assigned to the right styles and variants.

A size-chart app can help implement charts on a platform such as Shopify, but it cannot verify that your measurements are accurate. The Smart Size Chart & Size Guide Shopify App Store listing describes templates, unit conversion, customization, mobile presentation, and multiple-language support. A practical setup checklist
- Request the product-specific supplier chart, or measure your own samples and finished garments.
- Choose a body chart, garment chart, or both, and label each one clearly.
- Select measurement points that reflect the product’s shape and intended fit.
- Write measurement instructions that match the chart’s method and labels.
- Add a fit description and between-size advice only when product-specific information supports it.
- Choose consistent units, check the chart against the correct products, and make it easy to open from each product page.
