Find an overlay or widget theme in the Streamlabs Library, check which parts it includes, then install the full design or only the components you want. In Streamlabs Desktop, you can also import a local .overlay file or build a scene collection yourself. Widget themes are separate from scene overlays: they control the appearance of items such as alerts, chat, goals, and event lists.
Choose an overlay, a widget theme, or both
An overlay arranges visual elements in your stream scenes: for example, a starting-soon screen, webcam frame, background, or BRB screen. A widget theme styles functional widgets such as alerts, chat, goals, and event lists. A design bundle may include both, but its components vary, so review the contents before installing.
Decide whether you need a complete visual package, a consistent look for specific widgets, or both. Also check whether the design supports your intended layout: Streamlabs says its Dual Output collection includes horizontal and vertical layouts, but support can vary across designs.
Find a design in the Streamlabs Library
- Open the Streamlabs Library and browse featured designs or collections. Collections are organized around styles, games, and stream categories.
- Use Advanced Search to narrow results by keyword, preferred colors, type, and matching widget themes. If the results are too limited, reset filters and try a broader search.
- Open a design and inspect its listed components. Look for the scenes, webcam frame, labels, alert box, event list, chat, and goal widgets you actually need; do not assume every bundle contains the same items.
- Check whether the design is free or requires Streamlabs Ultra. Streamlabs says many library designs are available for free and that the full theme library is accessible with Ultra; check the current library and product page for availability and terms.
- Compare the visual style and colors with your channel, confirm that the included widgets match your needs, and verify horizontal or vertical layout support before installing.
Install a library overlay
- In the Streamlabs Library, select the overlay design you want and choose Select and Install.
- Choose which components to add when prompted. You can install the pieces you want rather than taking every element in a bundle.
- When Streamlabs prompts you, open Streamlabs Desktop and confirm the installation.
- Open the resulting scene collection in Streamlabs Desktop and review the scenes and sources. Adjust the scenes to fit your stream layout and the assets you use.
Streamlabs’ installation guide also describes library installation in OBS Studio. The exact controls can differ by app, so follow the prompts shown in the application you are using.

Import a local .overlay file in Streamlabs Desktop
If you already have an overlay file, import it instead of searching the library:
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings.
- Go to Scene Collections.
- Choose Import Overlay File.
- Select the
.overlayfile and wait for the import to finish. - Open the imported scenes and adjust their elements as needed.
Build a scene collection manually
For a design that does not exist in the library, create a fresh scene collection and add the visual elements and widgets you want. This gives you direct control over the composition, but you will need to assemble the scenes yourself. If matching widgets and a coordinated design are important, Streamlabs recommends using a professionally designed library overlay.

Install and customize a widget theme
Apply a theme from the library
- Open the widget-theme library and choose a theme that fits your stream.
- Choose Select and Install.
- In the popup, select which widgets to update, then install the theme.
Create an alert theme from scratch
- Open the Alert Box settings.
- In the theme dropdown, choose Add a Theme.
- Name the theme and choose whether to start from your current settings or Streamlabs defaults.
- Customize the settings for the alerts you use.
Check which theme is active before editing
Widget-style edits apply to the currently active theme. Before changing a widget, check the active theme on the dashboard’s Widget Themes page or in the theme dropdown on that widget’s settings page. This helps prevent edits from affecting a different theme than the one you intended.
What to know about access and platform support
Streamlabs’ current library FAQ says many overlays and widget themes are free, while the full theme library is accessible as part of Ultra. Since availability and subscription terms can change, confirm them on Streamlabs’ current pages rather than relying on old prices or descriptions.

The library FAQ currently lists Streamlabs Alert Box themes for Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook, Patreon, and Tiltify, as well as Streamlabs Charity, Tipping, Merch, and Cloudbot. Integration support can change; check the current Alert Box settings for the platform and services you use.
