FFmpeg sends and paces the media; systemd supervises the process; YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API supplies the ingest address and stream key and shows whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. A service restart can relaunch FFmpeg, but it cannot by itself guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast has returned to live.
How the pieces fit together
YouTube separates the viewer-facing event from the incoming media connection. A liveBroadcast represents the event or video; a liveStream describes the transmission. A broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts. See Google’s overview of broadcasts and streams.
In this guide, the VPS reads an archive file and FFmpeg sends it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. systemd runs FFmpeg in the foreground and can restart it if the process exits. YouTube associates the incoming feed with the channel’s active broadcast. Keep an eye on both systemd and YouTube: process health and broadcast health are separate things.
Before you begin
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU, memory, disk space, and network capacity for the chosen media and encoding method. The required capacity depends on your source and whether FFmpeg copies or transcodes it.
- A channel enabled for live streaming, with the intended broadcast and replay settings available in YouTube Studio.
- An archive file you have permission to rebroadcast, including any music, clips, artwork, and other included material.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Check the installed version and its supported options with
ffmpeg -versionand the corresponding FFmpeg documentation. - A plan for what should happen when the source ends: stop the event, repeat one recording, or move to another episode. These are distinct playback and broadcast-lifecycle choices.
Create or select the YouTube broadcast
Choose the broadcast model
For a one-time episode or planned program, use a scheduled event and confirm its privacy and recording settings. The API’s broadcast insert reference specifies fields including a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. The LiveBroadcasts reference describes settings such as recording from start and DVR; available choices can depend on channel permissions and current YouTube restrictions.

A recurring or continuous channel has different needs from a scheduled event. Decide how each episode maps to a broadcast, whether a stream connection will be reused, and how the event should end. Do not assume that an FFmpeg loop alone creates, schedules, or restarts YouTube broadcasts.
Get the current ingest details
In YouTube Studio, open the live control room for the intended broadcast and use the current stream URL and stream key shown there. If using the API, the LiveStreams reference describes ingestion details exposed through cdn.ingestionInfo, including addresses and a stream name. Treat the key as a password: do not put a real key in a public unit file, screenshot, repository, or shell command that may be saved in shell history.
For secure ingest, Google documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. Follow its current endpoint, path, and port requirements in Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS; the guide specifies port 443. Use the actual current URL and key supplied for your stream rather than guessing an endpoint.
Prepare the archive and choose playback behavior
One recording played once
For a single episode that should play once, configure FFmpeg to read the file and send output in real time. FFmpeg documents file-to-RTMP output and input loop options in its protocol documentation and general documentation. Match the command to your installed version and media; a file reaching its end does not automatically produce the right YouTube event behavior.

One recording repeated continuously
For a repeat-one channel, explicitly configure repeat behavior and test what happens at end-of-file, including whether the connection remains usable and whether the transition is acceptable to viewers. Do not treat a loop flag as a complete broadcast recovery or event scheduling system.
Multiple episodes in sequence
For an archive of episodes, use a deliberate playlist or orchestration plan. Choose whether the stream should pause between episodes, continue directly, update metadata, or end and begin a new broadcast. A single-file loop command does not implement reliable playlist sequencing or seamless transitions by itself.
Audio-only podcasts need a video track
YouTube Live receives a video stream as well as the expected audio for the selected setup. If the source is audio-only, plan a visual track, such as a static or animated slate, and verify in YouTube’s health display that both audio and video arrive as intended. The precise visual treatment and encoder profile depend on your project; test the actual output.
Build and test the FFmpeg command
Use the source’s actual codecs, container, dimensions, and frame rate to decide whether stream-copy is suitable or a transcode is needed. Stream-copy can reduce VPS CPU work when the source is compatible with the selected ingest profile; transcoding may be necessary when it is not. This decision is archive-specific, so confirm the result in YouTube rather than assuming a command fits every podcast file.

The exact current YouTube bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, codec, and keyframe recommendations are not specified here. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the target profile before setting those values. Do not copy numeric settings from an unrelated archive or assume the source file’s properties are automatically acceptable.
Construct the command with the current ingest URL and key, but keep secrets out of public logs and command histories. Test interactively with a private or unlisted event where available, and confirm that YouTube detects expected audio and video and reports healthy stream status. The LiveStreams API reference describes stream status and health information, including potential audio or configuration issues.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
Use a dedicated unprivileged account for the service and run FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process. Store sensitive ingest details in a protected location with restrictive permissions, and configure the service to read them without exposing the key in a world-readable unit file or status output. Exact unit directives and secret-handling syntax vary with the Linux distribution and installed systemd version, so validate the configuration against the systemd documentation for your VPS before relying on it.
Choose a deliberate restart policy rather than assuming that a restart directive solves every outage. Once the unit is installed, use your distribution’s normal systemd tooling to reload the manager configuration, start the service, and inspect its status and journal logs. Confirm the command remains in the foreground and that a failure produces useful diagnostic output. The StreamNeo article Running FFmpeg as a systemd Service So Your Loop Survives a Reboot discusses an FFmpeg loop managed as a service; use distribution documentation to verify syntax and behavior on your own system.

Test recovery before leaving it unattended
- Start the service during a controlled test and verify that FFmpeg can read the source and connect to the intended ingest destination.
- Check YouTube’s live control room or API state for the expected audio/video and stream health, then confirm the intended broadcast is live.
- Review the service logs for input, codec, network, and reconnect errors. A systemd service being active is not proof that viewers can see a healthy YouTube event.
- During a maintenance test, interrupt the service or network deliberately. Observe whether systemd restarts FFmpeg and separately verify whether YouTube returns the intended broadcast to a live state.
- Confirm that the source file remains readable and that the VPS has adequate CPU and network capacity under the actual workload.
Google’s Life of a Broadcast guide explains the broadcast lifecycle and stream-health checks. A restarted encoder may reconnect, but it cannot ensure YouTube has associated the connection with the intended event or that the broadcast recovered as you want.
End the stream and check the replay
When a one-time program is finished, stop FFmpeg cleanly and allow YouTube to complete processing. YouTube converts a completed broadcast into a channel video, but the replay may not be available immediately. Check the resulting video and the channel’s archive or replay settings after processing; the LiveBroadcasts API reference describes relevant broadcast settings.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check the current ingest URL, stream key, RTMPS path and port, channel live eligibility, and VPS network access. Do not reuse a stale key without confirming it is still valid.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube reports a stream issue: Inspect the YouTube health information and FFmpeg logs. Confirm the audio/video streams and encoding profile match YouTube’s current guidance.
- The service is active but the broadcast is not live: Check the broadcast and stream state in YouTube, not only systemd status. Restarting the process does not guarantee that YouTube resumed the intended event.
- The stream stops at the end of an episode: Decide whether the desired behavior is stop, repeat, or next episode, then implement and test that behavior explicitly. A one-file playback command does not provide general playlist management.
- High CPU use or encoding failures: Determine whether FFmpeg is transcoding and whether the VPS can sustain that workload. If the source already fits the chosen ingest profile, test whether stream-copy is suitable; otherwise adjust the transcode approach and recheck YouTube health.
- The replay is missing immediately after stopping: Allow for YouTube processing and check the channel’s video list and replay settings again after processing has had time to finish.
Or let it run in the cloud
