You can use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to sequence compatible podcast episode files and send them to YouTube Live through an encoder connection. The demuxer does not by itself guarantee gapless transitions or an indefinitely reliable stream: check the files’ stream layouts and durations, verify your loop setup against your installed FFmpeg version, and test episode boundaries before going public.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected to the internet for the stream’s duration.
- Podcast episode files prepared in the order you want them to play.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a script that others can access.
This method is for prepared media files, not live microphone or camera capture. It describes a continuous sequence as the intended output, not a guarantee of gapless playback, uninterrupted service, or a recoverable archive.
Check whether the episodes can be concatenated without re-encoding
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets in sequence. Stream copying can avoid re-encoding, but only if the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Matching file extensions or containers alone are not enough. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation warns that all files must have the same streams and notes that duration information affects timestamps; inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps.
Inspect and compare the inputs
Use FFprobe, included with many FFmpeg distributions, to inspect each episode. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format episode-01.mp4
Compare the number and types of streams, codecs, time bases, and reported durations across every file. Pay particular attention to audio and video stream differences, and investigate duration values that do not match the actual media. If you cannot establish compatibility, do not assume stream copy will work cleanly.
Normalize incompatible files when needed
If the files do not have compatible stream layouts, convert them to a consistent set of streams and encoding settings before using stream copy, or build a transcoding workflow with FFmpeg’s concat filter. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding, from the concat filter, which is useful when re-encoding is required. Choose based on the actual episode files rather than assuming all podcast exports are alike.

Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file named episodes.ffconcat, with one file directive per episode in playback order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'
Use paths relative to the list file or full paths. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax. If you include the ffconcat version 1.0 header for automatic format recognition, it must be the exact first line, without leading spaces or a byte-order mark. The header is optional when you explicitly select the concat demuxer.

Configure YouTube Live for an encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder setup. Keep the key private. Refer to YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current Live Control Room flow.
- Use RTMPS for a standard supported ingest connection; YouTube recommends it over RTMP.
- Set the output to H.264 video, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the source and your upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for its resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube also recommends running an upload speed test.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative episodes and monitor stream health in Live Control Room before announcing a public broadcast.
These settings describe YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest requirements and guidance; they do not make incompatible source files compatible. If the source streams need normalization, transcode them as part of the FFmpeg workflow.
Set up and verify continuous playback
The concat list defines episode order, but an indefinitely looping FFmpeg command depends on loop-option behavior and placement for the FFmpeg version installed on your machine. The available official references do not establish a single verified command for looping a concat-demuxer playlist into YouTube Live, so do not treat a copied command as universally correct. Check the documentation for your installed version and verify its behavior in a test stream before relying on it.

Test at least one complete transition between episodes, including the audio at the boundary. Unequal stream lengths, duration mismatches, or timestamp differences can produce pauses, artifacts, or gaps even when the files appear to play individually. A successful short test is not proof of indefinite operation: the computer, FFmpeg process, and network connection must remain available for a local encoder stream to continue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose RTMPS or HLS based on the ingest requirement
For ordinary supported ingest, use RTMPS. YouTube describes HLS as an alternative for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; HLS has higher latency because it sends media in segments. HLS is not just a URL swap: YouTube’s HLS setup instructions specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Use HLS only when your encoder and the stream’s format requirements call for it.

Plan separately for recordings and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or longer; the cited guidance does not establish a dependable archive for that duration. If the program or episodes need to remain available, make and preserve a separate recording or archive plan.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The concat list will not open: Check that the file is plain text, the paths are valid from the list’s location, and paths with spaces or special characters are correctly quoted or escaped. If using the header for automatic recognition, confirm it is the exact first line.
- FFmpeg reports mismatched streams or playback is broken: Compare stream count, codecs, and time bases for every episode. Normalize files that are incompatible instead of assuming the same container means the same encoding.
- Audio or video jumps at an episode boundary: Check reported durations and actual file lengths, then investigate mismatched stream lengths and timestamps. Test the transition again after correcting the inputs.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the selected server URL and stream key belong to the intended stream, and the encoder is using a supported ingest format and connection. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops: Check the upload connection and encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, then run a representative test and watch Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators. A local setup also depends on the host and network staying online.
- No archive appears for a long broadcast: If the stream lasted 12 hours or more, do not assume YouTube’s automatic archive will cover it; use a separate recording plan.
