JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern raster image format that can store lossy or lossless images, support progressive display and animation, and even preserve a JPEG so its original bitstream can be reconstructed. For a website, it may reduce transfer size or improve how a large image appears while loading—but results depend on the image, encoding settings, and browser support. Use it with a fallback, and compare it with AVIF or WebP on images representative of your site.
What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL is a standardized image coding system and file format in the JPEG standards family, specified as ISO/IEC 18181. It supports both lossy and lossless encoding. Its feature set also includes alpha transparency, animation, layers, thumbnails, progressive coding, high bit depth, HDR, and wide colour gamut. A JPEG XL file can be a bare codestream or an ISO-BMFF-based container. The container can carry metadata such as Exif, XMP, and JUMBF. Library of Congress format description
What “lossless JPEG recompression” means
JPEG XL can store an existing JPEG in a way that allows the exact original JPEG bitstream to be reconstructed later. This is different from decoding a JPEG into pixels and making a new lossy image: the special recompression workflow preserves a path back to the original JPEG data. What JPEG XL could change on a website
Transfer size depends on the image and quality target
JPEG XL can produce smaller files than JPEG in some workflows, but it does not win every comparison with AVIF or WebP. Mozilla’s August 24, 2026 article illustrates the trade-off with sample encodings: for one photographic image at SSIMULACRA 2 score 62.8, AVIF was 116 kB and JPEG XL 134 kB; at score 80, AVIF was 227 kB and JPEG XL 264 kB. In lossless mode for that example, AVIF was 1.76 MB, JPEG XL 1.45 MB, and lossless WebP 1.55 MB. Mozilla also showed a screenshot example with the same broad pattern: AVIF smaller in its cited lossy comparison and JPEG XL smaller in lossless mode. WebKit’s Safari 17 announcement made two vendor claims: recompressing existing JPEGs to JPEG XL could reduce their size by an average of 20% without data loss, and encoding from an original could yield files up to 60% smaller than JPEG. Those figures describe claims in that announcement, not guaranteed savings for a particular site or an independent current benchmark. WebKit’s Safari 17 announcement
For a fair format decision, encode a representative mix of your own photographs, product images, illustrations, and screenshots at visual quality levels you would actually publish. Compare resulting file sizes and inspect the images at the sizes and displays your visitors use. One unusually compressible photograph is not enough to predict a site’s overall result.

Progressive display can reveal an image before it finishes downloading
JPEG XL supports progressive coding: a browser can render a recognizable version before the full file has arrived. Jake Archibald’s Mozilla article describes the goal as letting a user identify the subject of a 135 kB image after only a few kilobytes have downloaded. That is a specific example, not a guaranteed threshold for all images, connections, or browser implementations. Mozilla Hacks, August 24, 2026
Feature support is not uniform just because a browser can decode JPEG XL. WebKit highlighted progressive loading when it announced Safari 17 support, while Mozilla’s later comparison says Safari’s implementation lacks progressive rendering. Check the behavior in the stable browser versions used by your audience if progressive display is part of the reason for adopting the format. Other capabilities can matter beyond file size
Depending on the source assets and delivery pipeline, JPEG XL’s transparency, animation, high-bit-depth, HDR, wide-gamut, and metadata support may help consolidate image workflows. Those capabilities do not by themselves guarantee a smaller file, faster page, or consistent display: the browser, encoding choices, and how the image is delivered still matter. Mozilla’s editorial summary characterizes JPEG XL as strong for lossless imagery, progressive rendering, and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss, and AVIF as strong for web-quality photographs and images combining sharp edges with flat surfaces. Browser support changes over time, and the available descriptions do not line up into a simple universal yes or no. Mozilla’s August 24, 2026 article describes its Firefox implementation, says Chrome also intended to ship, and describes Safari support as partial. MDN’s living image-format guide summarizes JPEG XL as supported by Safari, available in Chrome behind a flag, and available in Firefox Nightly. </picture>For responsive images, provide appropriately sized variants in the source and fallback, and set the image’s intrinsic dimensions when known to help the browser reserve layout space. Confirm that the fallback asset is available and visually suitable; the fallback is what visitors on browsers without usable JXL support will see.
How to decide whether to adopt JPEG XL
- Identify the reason. JXL is especially worth evaluating if you need lossless delivery, progressive rendering in supported browsers, or reversible recompression of existing JPEGs.
- Build a representative test set. Include the image types, dimensions, transparency needs, and quality levels that actually appear on your site.
- Compare formats fairly. Generate JPEG XL, AVIF, and WebP candidates at acceptable visual quality where relevant; compare size and inspect details rather than assuming one extension is best.
- Serve a fallback. Use
<picture>withtype="image/jxl"and an appropriate fallback image. - Validate the deployed experience. Check the browser versions your visitors use, confirm the intended source is selected, and measure actual page delivery before expanding rollout.
