Convert podcast episodes to a consistent audio format, give YouTube Live the required video stream, then test your FFmpeg output in YouTube Studio before relying on it. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. A playlist is a separate challenge: no single FFmpeg playlist command is guaranteed to work with every collection, so the commands below state their assumptions and require a test with your files.

What you need to prepare

  • A computer with FFmpeg installed. The commands below assume it is available as ffmpeg in your terminal.
  • Podcast episode files you have permission to stream, ideally with consistent channel layout and sample rate.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a stream key available in YouTube Studio.
  • A still image or other visual to accompany the audio. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup includes a video codec as well as audio, so an audio-only output is not the complete encoder workflow.

FFmpeg can read many media types, transcode them, and write different formats. Renaming a file does not convert its codec: conversion requires an output codec option. FFmpeg’s command structure is ffmpeg [global options] {[input options] -i input} ... {[output options] output}; options apply to the input or output they precede. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Convert an episode to YouTube-friendly audio

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as audio codec options for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or encoder setup will work unchanged. The example below converts one input file to AAC in an M4A container:

ffmpeg -i episode.mp3 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 episode.m4a

Replace episode.mp3 with your source filename. -vn excludes any source video, -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s AAC encoder, -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate, -ar 44100 sets the sample rate, and -ac 2 requests two channels. The output extension matches the M4A container. If you prefer MP3, select an MP3 audio encoder and use an MP3 output filename; YouTube lists both AAC and MP3, and the cited guidance does not establish that one is universally better.

Build and validate the episode sequence

Check consistency before making a playlist

Multi-file behavior depends on the files’ codecs, stream layouts, timestamps, and containers. Inspect the episode properties and avoid assuming that files with different formats can be joined or looped seamlessly. Converting episodes to matching audio settings can make a collection more consistent, but it does not by itself prove that a particular concat or looping method will work.

Do a short test with your actual files

FFmpeg’s general documentation describes its conversion model and syntax, but does not establish one universal command for concatenating arbitrary podcast episodes and looping them indefinitely. Do not treat a concat-list or stream-loop pattern as guaranteed for every collection. Test a short run using the precise files and installed FFmpeg build you intend to use. Confirm episode order, transitions, audio continuity, and what happens at the end of the sequence before scheduling a broadcast.

Send the stream to YouTube Live over RTMPS

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder connections. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room, create or select the stream, and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and do not paste it into screenshots or public commands. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video codecs. They recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health.

Your FFmpeg output must include video as well as the prepared podcast audio for this documented RTMP/RTMPS setup. A still visual encoded as video is one practical approach, but choose an FFmpeg video workflow appropriate to your image, playlist, and installed build. The sources cited here establish YouTube’s video codec requirement, not a universal still-image command for every FFmpeg version and playlist. Do not send an audio-only command and expect it to satisfy the complete setup.

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live control room. Select the stream and locate its stream key and server details.
  2. Configure your FFmpeg output. Use RTMPS and the server address and stream key shown for that stream. Include a video layer and the audio playlist; choose compatible video and audio codecs and the recommended stereo audio settings where applicable.
  3. Start a short test broadcast. Check that YouTube receives both audio and video, that episodes play in the intended order, and that transitions and the end of the sequence behave as expected.
  4. Check stream health in Studio. Resolve any warnings or interruptions before depending on the stream for a scheduled or continuous broadcast.

Use the exact server and key details YouTube provides for your stream rather than copying a key from another channel or relying on a generic endpoint. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS recommendations and key instructions are in its encoder setup guidance.

RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are different ingest routes

This guide focuses on RTMP/RTMPS because it is the simpler route for a basic encoder workflow. HLS is not a protocol swap in an RTMP command: YouTube’s HLS workflow has its own packaging and request requirements, and its help guidance notes higher latency than RTMP.

Ingest route What YouTube specifies Practical implication
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 audio; video codec H.264, H.265, or AV1. Recommended stereo audio: 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the encoder workflow and stream details supplied by YouTube; RTMPS is recommended.
HLS TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Listed audio codecs include AAC, AC3, and EAC3; recommended stereo audio is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Requires segmented HLS packaging and HTTPS requests; it is not a drop-in RTMP output change and has higher latency than RTMP.

For full protocol-specific details, consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not detect a valid stream: Check that the stream key and server details match the selected live event, that the connection uses RTMPS as configured, and that FFmpeg is sending a video stream as well as audio.
  • No sound or the wrong channel layout: Confirm that the source contains an audio stream and that the output includes audio. For stereo, test with -ar 44100 -ac 2 and verify the actual output in YouTube Studio.
  • FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: Run ffmpeg -encoders and check whether your installed build includes the selected audio or video encoder. Build capabilities vary.
  • Playlist concatenation fails or episodes play incorrectly: Check for mismatched codecs, stream layouts, timestamps, and containers. Isolate files by testing them individually, then test the intended sequence again; there is no universally validated concat command for arbitrary episode sets.
  • The stream connects but YouTube reports health issues: Run a preflight test with representative audio and movement, monitor YouTube’s stream-health display, and correct the encoder or connection issue before relying on the broadcast.
