You can capture a webpage in Chrome without turning off hardware acceleration: open DevTools, enable Device Mode, then choose More options > Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. These are webpage captures, not screenshots of your entire desktop.
Capture a webpage with Chrome DevTools
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. In Chrome’s browser menu, choose More tools > Developer tools. Menu placement can vary by Chrome version.
- In DevTools, turn on Device Mode if it is not already active.
- Open Device Mode’s More options menu. Choose Capture screenshot to capture the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot to include the page content below the fold. Google documents both options in its Chrome DevTools Device Mode guide.
The documented workflow does not require hardware acceleration to be disabled. It is not, however, a guarantee that every page or setup will render correctly.
Choose between DevTools and Chrome Headless
| Method | Capture scope | Setup and repeatability |
|---|---|---|
| DevTools Device Mode | Visible viewport or full-size page | Interactive menu steps; useful for one-off captures |
| Chrome Headless | Page screenshot at specified window dimensions | Command line; can be run repeatedly or scripted |
For a command-line capture, Chrome’s Headless documentation shows this example:
chrome --headless=new --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://developer.chrome.com/
Chrome saves the image as screenshot.png in the current working directory. Replace the URL and dimensions for your page and desired capture size. This documented command sets window dimensions; use DevTools’ full-size option when you specifically need the documented full-page capture workflow. See Chrome Headless mode.

What hardware acceleration does—and when to test without it
Chrome Enterprise and Education describes hardware acceleration this way: “Hardware acceleration uses your device’s GPU to perform graphics-intensive tasks, like playing videos or games, while your central processing unit (CPU) runs all other processes.” Its documentation does not say that acceleration inherently prevents webpage screenshots. See Chrome’s GPU policy documentation.
If the page has a broader rendering problem, rather than a failure limited to saving a screenshot, switching acceleration off can be a temporary diagnostic test. A recent answer in the Google Chrome Help Community recommends opening Settings > System, turning off Use graphics acceleration when available, and selecting Relaunch. This is community troubleshooting advice, not an official requirement or a guarantee. If the test helps isolate the problem, turn acceleration back on and relaunch after testing.

Troubleshoot capture problems
- You captured only what was visible. Use Device Mode’s More options > Capture a full size screenshot when you need content below the fold.
- The image is blank or the page looks wrong. First distinguish a webpage rendering issue from a screenshot-save issue. The DevTools documentation describes the capture commands, but does not promise they will resolve every rendering fault. If the page itself is misrendering, try the temporary acceleration test above.
- A managed Chrome browser blocks a screenshot. The DisableScreenshots policy reference says the policy can block screenshots taken with keyboard shortcuts or extension APIs. It does not establish that the policy blocks DevTools’ menu capture, so ask your administrator which restriction applies rather than assuming the menu is affected. The policy page lists ChromeOS support since version 22 and Linux, Mac, and Windows support since version 22; it lists Android support since Chrome 143. These are the versions stated on that policy reference, which may change.
- You need a screenshot of the device screen, not just the webpage. ChromeOS has its own screen-capture shortcuts: Ctrl + Overview captures a screenshot, and Ctrl + Shift + Overview captures a selected area. This is a device-screen workflow, unlike DevTools’ webpage capture. See Chromium’s screenshots and video captures guide.

For an API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one GET request. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo also provides a Python example: import requests; r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90); open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content). In Node.js: const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
