To keep podcast notes visible inside an always-on YouTube stream, add a text graphic or browser-based overlay to the encoder scene that produces the video. Use the overlay for a brief episode title, segment or guest, and short URL; put the complete notes on a separate page. YouTube documents browser-source overlays for a break slate, not a dedicated show-notes feature, so adapting that workflow for notes is a practical approach to test in your encoder.
Choose how viewers will reach the notes
| Approach | What viewers see | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| On-video overlay | Selected notes appear in the video image. | Requires a graphic or browser source configured in the encoder and checked in the stream preview. YouTube’s documented browser-source instructions concern a break overlay; applying them to show notes is an adaptation. |
| Pinned live-chat message | A chat message links viewers to the full notes page. | It is not rendered into the video. Only the creator can pin a message, and only one message can be pinned at a time. Chat-link availability differs between horizontal and vertical live formats. |
| Companion page with embedded chat | Notes and chat appear together on an external webpage. | The embedded chat domain must match the website domain. YouTube says chat embedding is unavailable on mobile web. |
If notes must remain visible to viewers who never open chat, use an on-video overlay. A pinned message can complement it, but should not be the only route to the notes: YouTube’s live-stream feature comparison lists clickable chat links for horizontal streams and says they are unavailable in the vertical live feed. Include a readable short URL in the video and test how it appears to viewers.
Build and add an on-video notes overlay
- Make a compact visual. Show only what helps someone orient themselves: the episode title, the current segment or guest, and a short URL. Treat the overlay as a summary rather than a transcript; place complete notes on a linked page.
- Add it to the encoder scene. Place the graphic or browser source in the scene feeding the YouTube stream. YouTube’s browser-source overlay instructions say to create a Browser Source in the encoder and set its width and height to match the stream resolution. Those instructions describe its break overlay; using the same kind of source for show notes is an adaptation, and support varies by encoder.
- Check the composition in preview. Before relying on the overlay, inspect it in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that text is legible and not obscured in the video. Then check the channel and public watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality.
- Optionally post the full-notes link in chat. Pin the message if useful. The creator, not moderators or viewers, can pin it, and there can be only one pinned message at a time.
Keep the notes useful throughout a continuous stream
An always-on program needs an operating plan for the overlay as well as the video. Decide who updates the notes, how an edit will be checked before it appears, what the video should show if the notes page or browser source fails, and who monitors a restart or encoder handoff. These are practical continuity measures; YouTube’s event setup guidance does not prescribe a 24/7 show-notes procedure.
YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams at least two hours before an event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. It also advises checking the preview before starting, verifying the event on channel and watch pages and mobile, monitoring audio and video quality, and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Those are event recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
