Use await page.setViewport({ width, height }) to change the dimensions Puppeteer uses to render a page. If you instead need to resize the browser window to a specific content area, clear the default viewport with page.setViewport(null) and use page.resize({ contentWidth, contentHeight })—but Page.resize is experimental, so check that your installed Puppeteer version and runtime support it.
Choose what you need to resize
A page viewport and a browser window are different things. The viewport controls the page’s responsive rendering area. Browser-window resizing targets the content area inside the window, excluding browser UI. Choose the method based on the size you need to control, not simply on the word “page.”
- Test a responsive layout or set screenshot dimensions: use
page.setViewport(). - Set the browser window’s page content area to a target size: use
page.resize()after clearing the default viewport. This API is experimental. - Test a device profile: use
page.emulate()to apply both its viewport and user agent. - Capture the entire document: use the screenshot option
fullPage: true; you do not need to enlarge the viewport just to capture below-the-fold content.
The examples in Puppeteer’s consulted documentation identify version 25.12.0, except the Page.emulate() API reference, which identifies 25.11.0. API support can change, so verify the documentation for your installed version before relying on experimental window resizing.
Set the page’s responsive viewport
Call setViewport() with the desired width and height, and await it. Set the viewport before navigating when possible. Puppeteer notes that some sites do not expect phones to change size; changing mobile or touch metrics can reload the page. See the Page.setViewport() API reference.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 640,
height: 480,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.evaluate(() => ({
width: window.innerWidth,
height: window.innerHeight,
})));
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The viewport dimensions are CSS pixels; deviceScaleFactor controls the device scale factor for rendering. setViewport() accepts a viewport object or null and returns a promise. Do not use page.viewport() as proof of the live dimensions: it reports the last configured viewport (or the connection’s default), not a measurement of the page’s actual current viewport.
Resize the browser window’s content area
Use this only when you need to change the browser window rather than merely emulate a different page viewport. Puppeteer’s window-management guide clears the default viewport and then resizes the content area. The guide uses puppeteer-core and configures headless screen information; --screen-info is headless-only. Page.resize is experimental, so confirm support in the runtime and Puppeteer version you actually use. See the window-management guide and Page.resize() API reference.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
args: ['--screen-info={800x600}'],
});
try {
const page = (await browser.pages())[0];
// Let the browser window determine the content area.
await page.setViewport(null);
const resized = page.evaluate(() => new Promise(resolve => {
window.addEventListener('resize', resolve, { once: true });
}));
await page.resize({ contentWidth: 600, contentHeight: 400 });
await resized;
const dimensions = await page.evaluate(() => ({
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
outerWidth: window.outerWidth,
outerHeight: window.outerHeight,
}));
console.log(dimensions);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Waiting for the page’s resize event matters because window resizing is asynchronous. Then measure the resulting page with window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight. The guide’s sample reports 600 × 400 inner dimensions and 600 × 487 outer dimensions in its example environment; outer dimensions depend on the environment and are not a universal browser-chrome allowance.
Emulate a device or capture a full page
Emulate a device
If the task is to test a specific device, page.emulate(device) is a shortcut for setting the device’s user agent and viewport. Emulate before navigation when the site might not expect a phone’s dimensions to change. Consult the Page.emulate() API reference for the device descriptors and version-specific details.

Capture the full document
For a full-document screenshot, use fullPage: true rather than resizing the viewport to the document height:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Screenshot clipping and capture beyond the viewport are separate controls. Screen geometry is also distinct: headless Chrome’s screen defaults to 800 × 600 unless configured with --window-size; --screen-info is headless-only. Headful Chrome uses the physical platform screens. See the Page.screenshot() API reference.

Common problems and fixes
- The page did not become the expected size: confirm whether you need a viewport or a browser content area. Use
setViewport()for responsive rendering; for window sizing, clear the viewport and use the experimentalresize()method if supported. - Your measurement disagrees with the configured viewport:
page.viewport()returns configuration, not a verified live measurement. Readwindow.innerWidthandwindow.innerHeightin the page instead. - The measurement is taken too early: a window resize is asynchronous. Register a one-time
resizeevent listener before callingpage.resize(), then measure after it fires. - The page reloads after changing dimensions: this can happen when changing
isMobileorhasTouch. Configure the viewport before navigation when possible. - A full-page capture is clipped: request
fullPage: trueand distinguish full-document capture from viewport resizing or screenshot clipping. - The window-resize method is missing or unsupported:
Page.resizeis experimental. Check the API documentation matching your installed Puppeteer version and the capabilities of your browser runtime.

If you only need a website screenshot—not a live Puppeteer page with a particular browser-window size—ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Frequently Asked Questions
Does `page.setViewport()` resize the browser window?
No. It sets the page’s emulated viewport. Use the experimental `page.resize()` API for browser-window content dimensions where your Puppeteer runtime supports it.
