How URL2PNG captures a webpage
URL2PNG is an API for generating website screenshots for use in applications, websites, and business processes. Its quickstart describes a request built with an API key, a security token generated from the request parameters and a secret, and the URL to capture. Follow the official quickstart for the current signing, encoding, and request syntax; do not expose the secret in public client-side code.
URL2PNG describes support for thumbnail or 1:1 captures, full-height pages, viewport control, user-agent and language overrides, custom CSS, and JavaScript-controlled capture timing. It also lists rendering support for graphs, canvas, webfonts, CSS3, SVG, and video. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not independent test results. See the URL2PNG feature overview.
Choose the capture settings
Set only the controls your target page needs. The documented parameter names and defaults can change, so verify the current syntax in the URL2PNG documentation before implementing a production request.

Viewport or full page
The documented viewport default is 1480x1037. Set the viewport to the browser area you want represented in the screenshot. The fullpage=true option attempts to capture the entire document canvas; the documented default is viewport-only. Because this is an attempt rather than a guarantee for every site, inspect the result for pages with unusual scrolling or dynamically rendered content.
Thumbnail width
Use thumbnail_max_width to constrain screenshot width when the destination has a known maximum width. Choose the target dimensions based on where the image will be displayed; do not rely on a later crop to fix a capture that omitted relevant page content.

CSS and page readiness
A CSS URL can be injected before capture. This changes how the webpage is rendered for the screenshot—for example, to suppress a page element or adjust a layout—and is distinct from editing pixels in the resulting image.
The say_cheese option can delay capture until a specified page element is available. URL2PNG also documents an additional delay after document readiness and asset loading, which can help when content appears later. Use a readiness condition when a specific element matters; use a delay only when the page needs extra time beyond its normal loading signals.

Language and user agent
Request headers can override the page language and user agent, allowing the capture request to represent a different language or client identity. These controls affect the page the site serves, so use them only when you need that variant.
Fresh capture or cached result
URL2PNG documents a 30-day default cache period. Its unique option accepts a varying value to force a fresh screenshot rather than reuse a cached one. Use a stable value when reuse is useful and a changed value when you need a new render; check the current documentation for exact parameter placement and behavior.
A practical capture workflow
- Decide what the destination needs. Choose viewport-only or a full-page attempt, then determine the target viewport and any thumbnail width.
- Add page-specific controls only when necessary. Configure CSS, language, user agent, element readiness, or extra delay if the page requires them.
- Choose cache behavior. Keep a reusable result when freshness is not important; vary
uniquewhen you need a fresh render. - Build and sign the request securely. Use the current official quickstart for the required API key, token generation, encoding, and endpoint syntax. Keep the secret on a server you control rather than exposing it in browser code.
- Inspect the returned image. Confirm that the intended content loaded and that the capture dimensions and page state suit its destination.
- Edit the image after capture if needed. Crop, resize, or composite the file in an image-processing workflow when capture-time settings are not enough.
How to crop, resize, or add effects after capture
Capture-time settings determine what page is rendered and how much of it is included. Image-level editing happens afterward. If you need a crop, resize, border, shadow, or overlay, apply it to the screenshot file using an image editor or an image-transformation service.
Cloudinary documents an optional URL2PNG add-on workflow that can generate a screenshot and then apply transformations such as cropping or resizing. Its examples also describe borders, shadows, and overlays. Cloudinary says add-on URLs are normally signed or eagerly generated unless the account setting is changed. What to check when a capture is wrong
- The page is cut off: Check whether the request uses viewport-only capture or
fullpage=true. Full-page mode is documented as an attempt, so review the returned image rather than assuming every page can be captured completely. - Late content is missing: Use
say_cheesefor a relevant page element or add the documented delay if content appears after the normal readiness and asset-loading stage. - The image is the wrong size: Verify viewport dimensions and
thumbnail_max_width; distinguish the browser area being captured from a later image resize. - The output looks like an older page state: Review the documented cache period and vary
uniquewhen a fresh screenshot is needed. - The page variant is wrong: Check the language or user-agent override, if set, and remove it if the default page should be captured.
- Request authentication fails: Recheck the official quickstart’s token-generation and encoding instructions. Do not guess at signing details or move a private secret into client-side code.
