When finished, browser.close() shuts down the browser, while browser.disconnect() detaches Puppeteer and leaves the browser process running.
Choose whether Puppeteer starts or attaches to the browser
| Method | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
puppeteer.launch() |
Your application should start and manage the browser process. | Launches a browser and returns a Browser object. |
puppeteer.connect() |
A browser is already running and you have its WebSocket endpoint. | Connects Puppeteer to that browser; it does not provision a remote browser service. |
The Puppeteer Browser management guide documents both workflows: launching and connecting to a browser. Supply the endpoint for the browser deployment you actually use, and protect access to it as an operational credential.
Launch a browser and clean up its contexts
A browser process can host multiple pages. Create a separate browser context for each task that needs isolated browser storage. Contexts do not share cookies or cache, and their pages are closed when the context is closed.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Do the task in this isolated context.
} finally {
await context.close(); // closes this context's pages too
}
} finally {
await browser.close(); // closes the browser and its associated pages
}
This pattern uses nested try/finally blocks so cleanup runs if navigation or task code throws. The default browser context is different: it cannot be closed. Use a created context when you need a disposable, isolated task boundary.

Pages and contexts are different levels
Use browser.newPage() for a page in the default context, or context.newPage() for a page within an isolated context. Closing one page does not close its whole browser; closing a created context closes all pages belonging to that context.
Attach to an existing browser
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: process.env.PUPPETEER_WS_ENDPOINT,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Work with the browser managed by the other process or service.
} finally {
await browser.disconnect();
}
Set PUPPETEER_WS_ENDPOINT to the WebSocket endpoint provided by the browser deployment. This example intentionally disconnects rather than closes: the browser belongs to the external manager, so the client exits without terminating that process.

Close the browser or only disconnect?
| Call | Result | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
browser.close() |
Shuts down the browser and closes its associated pages. | Your script launched the browser and its work is complete. |
browser.disconnect() |
Ends Puppeteer’s connection but leaves the browser process running; it does not close pages. | A separate process or service manages the browser lifecycle. |
The Puppeteer Browser management guide states: “Unlike browser.close(), browser.disconnect() does not shut down the browser or close any pages.” Choose deliberately: disconnecting from a browser you launched may leave that process running, while closing an externally managed browser may disrupt other clients.
Set launch options for your runtime
Pass options to puppeteer.launch(options) when the default browser setup does not match your runtime. The current official launch-options and browser-management pages are labeled Puppeteer Version 25.12.0; option support and defaults may vary by browser and installed release, so check the API reference for your version before relying on a particular setting.

Avoid sharing a profile directory between concurrent browser processes.timeout: set the startup timeout in milliseconds.handleSIGINT,handleSIGTERM, andhandleSIGHUP: configure whether Puppeteer handles the corresponding process signals.args: pass additional browser command-line arguments when the deployment requires them.
Puppeteer guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser, not every arbitrary executable. Treat a custom browser path or channel as a compatibility choice: validate startup, navigation, and shutdown in the target runtime.
Troubleshoot common lifecycle problems
- The browser process remains after a script finishes: check whether the code called
disconnect()instead ofclose(). Disconnect intentionally leaves the process running. - Pages unexpectedly disappear: check whether code closed the browser or the browser context that owns those pages. Closing a created context closes its pages.
- A context cannot be closed: the default browser context cannot be closed. Create a separate context with
browser.createBrowserContext()for work that needs independent cleanup. - Connection fails: confirm the browser is running and that
browserWSEndpointis the endpoint for that deployment. A connection call attaches to an existing browser; it does not start one. - A custom executable behaves differently: verify the executable and launch options against the Puppeteer version and browser you installed. The bundled browser is the guaranteed compatibility target.
- Startup times out: inspect the runtime and browser startup conditions, then adjust the launch
timeoutonly if a longer startup window is appropriate.
