That configures permission and location; it does not tell your script when the transfer has finished, so completion needs a separate check.
Set a download policy and destination
Puppeteer’s DownloadBehavior supports allow, allowAndName, deny, and default. For either allow policy, provide downloadPath as well. The API reference states: “Setting this is required if behavior is set to allow or allowAndName.” See the Puppeteer DownloadBehavior interface.

}Use a directory that exists or that your application creates, and that the process running Puppeteer can write to. Prefer an absolute path and a separate directory per job: this makes it easier to distinguish new files from leftovers and reduces filename collisions between concurrent downloads. The example assumes the puppeteer package is already installed and imported in the surrounding script.
Choose the policy deliberately
allowpermits downloads to the configured destination, retaining the browser-provided filename where supported.allowAndNamepermits downloads but names files using download GUIDs, so do not rely on a friendly, predictable filename.denyprevents downloads.defaultuses default behavior where available; it is not an explicit destination strategy.
These policy names are documented in the Puppeteer API. The Chromium DevTools Protocol schema snapshot also lists them for Browser.setDownloadBehavior; its older Page-domain command is marked deprecated. That snapshot is specific to the referenced protocol revision, so check the protocol documentation matching your deployed browser.

Detect when a download is actually complete
Setting downloadBehavior configures the browser; it is not a completion signal. A pre-existing file with the expected name, a .crdownload file, or a nonzero file size by itself does not prove that this run’s transfer finished.
Known filename and expected content
For a predictable output, use a fresh per-job directory and poll for the expected file with a finite deadline. Then verify content appropriate to the file type—for example, that the file can be parsed or that its contents match an expected value. A stable size over a short interval can be an additional check, but should not replace content validation or the deadline.

Arbitrary filename or protocol notification
If the server chooses a name or the browser assigns a GUID, use download notifications documented for the exact browser and protocol you run, then validate the resulting file. Include a timeout, handle name collisions, and treat cancellation or missing output as a failed job rather than waiting indefinitely. There is no universal Puppeteer page.on('download') event to assume; check the relevant Page API and browser/protocol documentation for the workflow you selected. Account for browser and configuration differences
Do not assume that Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) and WebDriver BiDi have identical download controls. The practical guide notes that allowAndName is unsupported with WebDriver BiDi. Confirm support against the Puppeteer and browser versions actually deployed; the protocol schema snapshot is evidence for that revision, not a guarantee across versions.

Puppeteer’s configuration guide says configuration files and environment variables are ignored by puppeteer-core. It also says that after changing browser download options in configuration, you must rerun browser installation for the settings to take effect. This configuration route is distinct from setting downloadBehavior directly when creating a context.
Troubleshoot common download problems
