To prevent silence between songs, first identify whether the gap is inside a track or caused by the automation losing its source. Check the audio files for leading or trailing quiet, then configure a dependable fallback recording for when a playlist or live input fails. In Liquidsoap, mksafe keeps an unavailable source from stopping output by supplying silence; it does not provide music. Use a fallback with valid emergency audio when the goal is to avoid dead air.

Find where the silence starts

A continuous stream has separate stages: the audio generator or automation, the streaming server, and the listener’s player. A running automation process does not prove that audio is reaching the server or that a player can decode it. Check the stages separately before changing settings. The Liquidsoap Quickstart describes this generator-server-player arrangement: Liquidsoap Quickstart documentation.

  • A pause at every song change: inspect the beginning and end of the files. Source fallback cannot remove quiet already encoded into a track. Also check how the automation prepares and switches tracks; the cited Liquidsoap guidance does not establish a universal gapless-playback setting.
  • Only some tracks stop or fail: validate those files and their playlist paths. A playlist can fail if files are invalid or a playable file is not ready in time.
  • The stream goes silent when a live source disconnects: configure the live input to fall back to a playlist, then to emergency audio if the playlist also fails.
  • The automation runs but listeners hear nothing: check generator output, server ingestion, and player compatibility independently.

Set up a fallback that plays audio, not silence

Liquidsoap’s Quickstart gives this pattern for a fallible source and a security file:

fallback([your_fallible_source_here, single("failure.ogg")])

The fallback file must be valid, accessible to Liquidsoap, and suitable for broadcast. For a bhajan stream, that could be a short, licensed devotional recording or station identification, depending on the broadcaster’s editorial policy. A dependable local file is preferable to an emergency file that depends on a remote location being reachable.

Do not use mksafe by itself to solve silence between songs. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart says that mksafe makes a source infallible by streaming silence when its input becomes unavailable. That can keep output alive, but the silence is still audible. Fallback to a real emergency recording instead when the source failure needs to remain listenable.

A source-level fallback cannot repair every outage. If the Liquidsoap process stops, the server or network path fails, or a listener loses connectivity, the fallback branch may not run or reach that listener. Use the separate generator, server, and player stages to narrow down the fault.

Keep a live bhajan input from becoming dead air

If the stream mixes live audio with scheduled devotional music, put the live input first, a playlist second, and emergency audio third in the fallback chain. The Liquidsoap cookbook demonstrates this priority:

fallback(track_sensitive=false, [live, playlist, emergency])

In the cookbook example, live is supplied by input.harbor. The Harbor source is available only while a source client is connected; when it disconnects, the playlist can resume. The emergency file is the last branch if the playlist is unavailable. See the Liquidsoap cookbook and Harbor input reference. Adapt the priority and transition behavior to the broadcast, and verify syntax against the installed Liquidsoap version.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Decide whether a reconnection pause is acceptable

The cookbook also shows an optional five-second silence on a transition out of live input to give an unstable client time to reconnect. This is a specific recovery tactic, not a fix for quiet between recorded songs. It deliberately inserts silence, so use it only if the reconnection tradeoff suits the stream.

Check codecs only when playback compatibility is the problem

The output encoder determines details such as codec, bitrate, and channels. Choose a format supported by the intended listeners’ players: Liquidsoap’s encoding guide describes MP3 as broadly compatible and notes that modern browsers support Opus and Vorbis. A codec change may help when a player cannot decode the stream, but the guide does not claim that changing codecs fixes playlist timing or gaps. See the Liquidsoap encoding formats guide.

Choose the continuity strategy for the failure you have

Strategy What it covers Tradeoff
mksafe Keeps an unavailable input from stopping output by supplying silence. Output continues, but listeners hear silence.
Fallback to emergency audio Switches away from an unavailable source or playlist to a valid security recording. Requires a prepared, accessible file; does not fix a stopped process or server.
Live input, playlist, then emergency audio Prioritizes live audio and moves to scheduled music when the live client disconnects, then to emergency audio if needed. Requires correct source ordering and transition settings.
Short transition silence Gives an unstable live client time to reconnect in the documented cookbook example. Intentionally creates silence and does not address gaps inside tracks.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Listen to the source files. Inspect the affected tracks’ beginnings and endings. If quiet is encoded in the files, edit or replace them; changing a fallback cannot remove it.
  2. Validate the playlist and paths. Confirm each affected file is valid and accessible, and that the automation can prepare it in time. Check remote file availability if the playlist depends on remote media.
  3. Test the emergency branch. Confirm the fallback recording is a real, readable audio file and that the automation can access it. Test what listeners hear when the primary source is unavailable.
  4. Test live-source disconnection. If live input is used, disconnect its client deliberately in a controlled test and confirm the playlist takes over, followed by the emergency branch if necessary.
  5. Trace the output chain. If the automation is producing audio but listeners hear none, check server ingestion and then player compatibility instead of changing playlist timing blindly.
  6. Check the installed version. The cited Liquidsoap Quickstart and technical references are marked 2.5.x, while the cookbook is labeled latest. Confirm operators and parameters against the version actually deployed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 bhajan stream is prerecorded video going to YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not live camera audio; it does not remove silence already present in a video or track.
