Check the order of touchStart(), touchMove() and touchEnd() calls, including cleanup and retry paths; a touchscreen hardware fault is not what the error definition indicates.
What Puppeteer TouchError means
Puppeteer defines TouchError as an error thrown when an attempt is made to move or end a touch that does not exist. The current API reference inspected for this explanation is version 25.12.0: Puppeteer TouchError API reference.
In practical terms, the code asked Puppeteer to continue or finish a touch interaction, but there was no active touch for that operation. The definition points to the interaction’s state and call sequence; it does not, by itself, establish a problem with a physical touchscreen.
Check the touch lifecycle and call order
Puppeteer’s Touchscreen API documents touchStart(x, y), touchMove(x, y), touchEnd() and tap(x, y). The reference describes move and end as applying to the first active touch. See the Touchscreen API reference for the installed version’s details.

#1 Best Overall
- Find touch operations in the failing flow. Search for
touchMove(),touchEnd(), and anyTouchHandle.move()orTouchHandle.end()calls. - Trace execution order. Confirm a touch is started before a move or end can run. Check branches and awaited operations so an asynchronous path cannot reach a move or end before the start has completed.
- Check for a second operation after the touch ends. A duplicate end, or a move after an end, is a plausible cause to investigate—not a confirmed cause until the failing code shows that sequence.
- Inspect cleanup and repeated execution. A
finallyblock, retry, event handler or duplicated callback might try to end the same touch again, or move it after it has been cleared. Verify the actual call order rather than assuming any one of these is responsible. - Reduce the failure to a small sequence. Log the touch calls in order and compare the smallest reproducible case with the documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.
Choose tap or an explicit gesture
Use tap(x, y) for a simple tap
If the interaction only needs a tap, Puppeteer documents tap(x, y) as a helper. It avoids manually managing a start-and-end sequence in your test.
Manage the lifecycle for a longer gesture
Use explicit start, move and end operations when the interaction needs a controlled gesture. Ensure each move or end corresponds to a touch that has been started and has not already ended. The API reference also cautions that browser optimizations mean not every touchMove() call results in a touchmove event; do not treat the absence of an event for every call as proof of this error.

Account for Puppeteer version differences
The current API reference used here is version 25.12.0. A supplemental type declaration for puppeteer-core 24.35.0 also defines TouchError and describes a TouchHandle with move(x, y) and end() methods for a started touch: puppeteer-core 24.35.0 type declarations. These are different versions, so check the documentation and declarations corresponding to your installed package before relying on implementation details.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Ending a touch in both normal and cleanup paths: inspect whether cleanup can run after an earlier end and guard the sequence according to your program’s state.
- Moving after a touch has ended: trace callbacks and awaits to see whether a delayed move runs after another path ends the interaction.
- Retrying only part of a gesture: check whether a retry resumes with a move or end but does not start a new touch first.
- Changing hardware or reinstalling Puppeteer first: the documented meaning is about attempting to move or end a nonexistent touch. Begin with the call site and installed version; the error definition alone does not point to hardware or a particular version defect.
- Assuming the title identifies every failure: if the stack trace or surrounding symptoms suggest another issue, inspect the actual call site and version rather than attributing every failure to this definition.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than automate a touch gesture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its options include viewport and device settings, full-page capture, selector-based capture, custom waits, and CSS or JavaScript.
