Enable Chromatic TurboSnap to test stories affected by your changes: use chromatic --only-changed in the CLI or set onlyChanged: true in the Chromatic GitHub Action. TurboSnap combines Git history with the Storybook build’s Webpack or Vite dependency graph to decide which stories need new snapshots. It reuses baseline snapshots for stories it considers unaffected.
Enable TurboSnap with the Chromatic CLI
Add the flag to the command your CI already runs. For example, add this script to package.json:
{
"scripts": {
"chromatic": "chromatic --only-changed"
}
}
Run it with your usual package manager, such as npm run chromatic. You can also pass --only-changed directly to your existing Chromatic CLI command. The same setting can be placed in chromatic.config.json. See Chromatic’s TurboSnap setup guide for current setup requirements and configuration.
Enable it in GitHub Actions
For the Chromatic GitHub Action, set onlyChanged: true:

with:
projectToken: ${{ secrets.CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN }}
onlyChanged: true
Chromatic’s setup guide recommends running the GitHub Actions workflow on push, rather than pull_request, for TurboSnap. A pull-request workflow can run against an ephemeral merge commit that is not yet present in Git history, which interferes with change detection. Confirm the current prerequisites in the setup guide before changing an existing pipeline.
What TurboSnap needs to identify changed stories
This is not simply a filter for files with recent edits. TurboSnap needs Git changes it can compare with ancestor builds and a dependency graph that connects changed files to stories. Chromatic’s setup page lists these prerequisites:
- Chromatic CLI 10.0 or later.
- Storybook 6.5 or later, or Vitest 4+ when using the Vitest setup.
- Git 2.28.0 or later.
- A Webpack- or Vite-based project, with stories configured in Storybook.
- UI Tests enabled and ten successful CI builds.
These versions and availability requirements can change; check Chromatic’s live setup documentation when implementing.
Why some changes trigger a full retest
TurboSnap can run the full Storybook when a change affects global configuration or a broadly imported dependency. Examples include .storybook/main.js, .storybook/preview.js, global decorators, or barrel files that many stories import. This is expected when Chromatic cannot safely narrow the impact to a smaller set of stories.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
A missing or out-of-sync lockfile can also cause broad retesting when package-control files change. See Chromatic’s TurboSnap introduction and troubleshooting guide for documented causes.
How merge commits affect selection
For merge commits, Chromatic considers the union of changes since both ancestor builds. This conservative behavior reflects baseline selection: before it chooses a reusable snapshot’s ancestor, it cannot safely assume that changes on one side of the merge are irrelevant. A larger-than-expected set of tested stories after a merge is not necessarily a configuration error.
Configure TurboSnap paths in a monorepo
TurboSnap must match files in Git diffs to files represented in Storybook’s build metadata. If the Chromatic command runs from a different directory than the Storybook build, set the Storybook base and config directories correctly. For a Storybook in packages/webapp, Chromatic’s example is:
chromatic --only-changed
--storybook-base-dir packages/webapp
--storybook-config-dir packages/webapp/.storybook
Path options do not all resolve relative to the same directory. Check Chromatic’s TurboSnap config paths guide rather than assuming every path is relative to the repository root. Chromatic also provides npx @chromatic-com/turbosnap-helper to report base/config paths and optionally update configuration.

Prebuilt Storybook builds and untraced files
If you use a prebuilt Storybook, follow the setup documentation for the build directory and generating stats JSON. If changed files are not represented in the bundler dependency graph, Chromatic documents --externals for files whose changes should trigger full retesting.
TurboSnap versus manual story filters
Use TurboSnap when you want Chromatic to infer which stories are affected by Git changes. Manual filters constrain the tested story set, but they do not validate whether omitted stories were affected. Chromatic documents onlyChanged as incompatible with onlyStoryFiles and onlyStoryNames; do not combine them.
| Approach | How selection works | Coverage trade-off |
|---|---|---|
onlyChanged / TurboSnap |
Automatic selection from Git changes and dependency tracing. | Stories judged unaffected can reuse baseline snapshots; broad or uncertain dependencies can still result in full retests. |
onlyStoryFiles or onlyStoryNames |
Manually includes chosen files or story names. | Chromatic does not infer the impact of omitted stories; use only when intentionally accepting that coverage constraint. |
For the exact option behavior, see Chromatic’s configuration reference.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
Chromatic tests all stories
- Check whether a global Storybook file, decorator, or widely imported module changed; these may legitimately affect every story.
- Check that the lockfile exists and reflects the package changes.
- Ensure CI has the Git history needed to identify the preceding build and baseline. Chromatic recommends retaining enough history for that comparison; see Branches and baselines.
- For a merge commit, remember that changes from both ancestor builds are considered.
No story files are detected from changes
- Run Chromatic with
--debugand inspect whether Git paths align with the Storybook base/config paths. - Confirm changed files are included in the build metadata. For files outside the dependency graph that should trigger broad retesting, configure
externalsas documented. - In a monorepo, verify
--storybook-base-dirand--storybook-config-diragainst the actual command and build directories.
Chromatic’s TurboSnap troubleshooting page covers these diagnostics. Also note that changing one story in a .stories file generally causes all stories in that file to be tested; TurboSnap does not isolate individual stories within a file.

Considering --untraced to reduce retests
--untraced excludes matching dependency paths from tracing. It can reduce noisy retests caused by broad dependencies such as barrel files, but can also prevent affected stories from being retested. Chromatic recommends disabling TurboSnap on the main branch if using this workaround, so changes can still be caught in a full run. Treat it as a coverage trade-off, not a default optimization; see TurboSnap best practices.
Understand baselines and billed snapshots
Chromatic UI Tests compare builds with baselines, the last accepted snapshot state for a story and mode. TurboSnap relies on Git history and ancestor builds to determine which snapshots can be reused. Chromatic’s published billing figures are:
| Snapshot outcome | Chromatic billing units |
|---|---|
| Captured | 1 billed snapshot |
| Copied | 0.2 billed snapshots |
| Bypassed | 0 billed snapshots |
Chromatic’s example for a 50-story Storybook captures 10 stories and copies 40, for a total of 18 billed snapshots. These are billing units in Chromatic documentation; the publication year is not stated on the cited page. They do not promise a specific reduction in elapsed test time or a particular bill. See the TurboSnap introduction and Quickstart.

No. A change to one story in a .stories file generally causes all stories in that file to be tested.
Can I combine onlyChanged with onlyStoryFiles?
No. Chromatic documents onlyChanged as incompatible with the manual onlyStoryFiles and onlyStoryNames filters.
