A fixed sleep does not tell an end-to-end test that the page is ready; it only tells the test that a chosen amount of time has passed. If the work takes longer, the test can race ahead and fail. If it takes less time, the test sits idle. Prefer waiting for the specific UI state or event the next step depends on, while keeping intentional time-based tests for behavior such as debounce intervals and timers.

Why fixed sleeps make end-to-end tests unreliable

A browser action can start client-side work, a server request, or both. Their completion time can vary with network conditions, server load, and the page itself. A statement such as “sleep for three seconds” does not observe any of that work: it merely delays the test before it continues.

A short sleep can let a race through

If the page has not reached the required state when the delay expires, the next assertion or interaction runs too early. That can produce an intermittent failure: the same test passes when the update happens quickly and fails when it takes longer. The WEFix paper describes nondeterministic ordering between test code and client-side code as a source of UI-test flakiness, with network delays and server load among the factors that affect completion time (WEFix, 2024).

A long sleep wastes suite time

If the state becomes ready well before the sleep ends, the test still waits out the entire delay. Cypress illustrates the cost with a modal that appears after 200 ms: a fixed three-second wait adds idle time rather than useful confidence (Cypress, Optimizing test performance). A suite with many such pauses can accumulate avoidable runtime.

Research results show why fixed waits deserve scrutiny, but they are not universal forecasts. In its evaluated projects, the 2024 WEFix paper reported average project-level runtime overhead of 1.25× for WEFix versus 3.7× for a two-second-wait strategy. The comparison is specific to that paper’s projects and methods (WEFix, 2024). In a separate 2023 study, TRaf examined 49 reproducible flaky tests from 26 open-source projects; developers adapted wait time in 31 cases (about 63%), including cases where the root cause was elsewhere. In those evaluated cases, the paper reported an 11.1% average execution-time reduction, or 20.2% with dynamic tuning, compared with developer-written fixes (TRaf, 2023). These findings support replacing broad timing guesses with better synchronization, not a guarantee that a particular change will produce the same savings in your suite.

Wait for the state the test actually needs

After an action, identify the observable outcome required by the next step, then use the framework’s retrying assertion or event-wait mechanism for that outcome. For example, after clicking “Open settings,” assert that the settings dialog is visible and contains its expected heading. Do not wait an arbitrary interval first.

Cypress

Use a query followed by an assertion that Cypress can retry, such as checking that the expected modal is visible. Cypress states: “If you find yourself reaching for cy.wait(number), the right fix is almost always to add an explicit assertion that Cypress can retry.” (Optimizing test performance) Its best-practices guidance also says arbitrary waits are almost never needed and notes that an ESLint rule flags cy.wait(<number>) (Cypress best practices).

Playwright

Playwright automatically checks actionability before actions, and its asynchronous expect matchers retry until the expected condition is met. The documentation says: “Playwright automatically waits for actionability checks to pass before performing each action.” (Writing tests) This action readiness does not replace asserting the outcome your scenario requires; after the action, verify the meaningful result with an asynchronous assertion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page.waitForTimeout API is discouraged for production tests. The API reference says, “Never wait for timeout in production,” and recommends signals such as network events or selectors becoming visible instead (Playwright Page API).

Other frameworks

Use the framework’s own condition-wait or retrying-assertion APIs, and confirm their exact behavior in its official documentation. Frameworks do not necessarily retry the same commands or assertions. Check what is retried, how selectors are resolved on retry, which events can be observed, and how timeouts are configured.

Choose a meaningful synchronization signal

The best wait is tied to the requirement being tested. A condition can still be wrong even when it is explicit: an element that exists before it is usable, a request unrelated to the visible result, or a generic “network idle” signal that does not match the application’s behavior can leave the same race in place.

  • For a UI result: assert the relevant element is visible, enabled, or contains the expected text.
  • For a request-driven result: observe the specific request or response when that event is part of the behavior, then assert the resulting UI state if that is what the user journey depends on.
  • For navigation: wait for the expected URL or destination content rather than a guessed page-load duration.
  • For a delayed control: assert the exact state that indicates it is ready to use, not merely that it has appeared in the document.

Set a bounded timeout appropriate to the application and diagnose repeated timeouts. Increasing every delay can conceal a slow or broken path without fixing the cause. Cypress describes end-to-end tests as the slowest full-stack testing layer and recommends reserving them for critical user journeys; this is a reason to avoid idle time, not to remove valuable coverage (Cypress, Optimizing test performance).

When a time-based wait is appropriate

Do not remove time from a test when elapsed time is itself part of the product contract. Examples include a debounce interval, a timer, or a polling cadence. In those cases, test the timing behavior intentionally and keep the wait local to that requirement. Cypress clock controls can advance timers without making the test wait in real time.

A documented external constraint may also require a particular delay as test setup. Keep that delay narrowly scoped and explain why it is necessary; do not use it as a general substitute for observing readiness.

How to replace a sleep and troubleshoot failures

  1. Find the dependency: identify what the test does after the pause and the exact page state that operation needs.
  2. Pick the closest observable signal: use a retryable UI assertion for a UI outcome, or observe the relevant network or navigation event when that is the actual dependency.
  3. Remove the arbitrary pause: let the assertion or event wait retry within a bounded timeout, then perform the next action.
  4. Run the test repeatedly and inspect failures: if the condition times out, investigate whether the app failed to reach it, the locator is wrong, the selected signal is premature or unrelated, or a genuine performance issue exists.

If the test still races

  • The element is present too early: assert the state that means it is ready, such as enabled status or expected content, rather than mere existence.
  • The network wait completes but the UI is stale: wait for the user-visible result as well; a response may not mean rendering and state updates are finished.
  • The assertion times out repeatedly: inspect the failure state and application path before extending the timeout. A timeout is a diagnostic boundary, not proof that the test needs a longer sleep.
  • A generic idle condition is intermittent: replace it with the particular event or result required by the scenario; background requests can make generic network-idle assumptions unsuitable.
  • The requirement really concerns a timer: use the framework’s clock or timer controls where available so the test can verify elapsed-time behavior without an arbitrary real-time pause.

Or skip the browser setup

For capturing a website screenshot, a one-call API can avoid building browser automation setup around that task. For example, save a screenshot of Stripe with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I remove every sleep call from my end-to-end tests?

No. Keep a time-based wait when elapsed time is the behavior under test, or when a documented external constraint makes a particular delay necessary. For page readiness, wait for a relevant observable condition.

Does Playwright’s automatic waiting mean I do not need assertions?

No. Its actionability checks make actions wait until they can be performed; an assertion is still needed to verify the outcome your test requires.

Why does a test that waits for a response still fail before the page is ready?

A response may not be the same event as the UI update. Synchronize on the user-visible state when that is what the next step depends on.
