You can use an iPhone or iPad as a streaming camera in three ways: connect an iPhone to a Mac with Apple Continuity Camera, send an iPhone or iPad feed into OBS using a USB or NDI workflow, or host the stream directly from the mobile device. Choose based on where you want the stream produced: on a computer or on the phone or tablet itself.
Choose the setup that fits your stream
| Route | Production device | Phone connection | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Continuity Camera | Mac app or browser studio | Wi-Fi or USB | Using an iPhone as a camera input on a Mac | Requires compatible Apple devices and account settings; this Mac webcam feature is iPhone-specific. Apple’s requirements |
| Camera for OBS Studio over USB | Mac or Windows computer running OBS | USB | A direct wired camera feed in an OBS scene | Requires a third-party app and OBS plugin; Windows also needs Apple device support. Project setup guide |
| NDI to OBS | Computer running OBS | Local network | Placing the camera away from the production computer | Network conditions affect the feed, and OBS needs a third-party NDI receiver. Project setup guide |
| Mobile studio | iPhone or iPad browser or app | Device’s internet connection | Hosting from the mobile device without a separate computer production setup | Mobile workflows can have platform-specific feature limits. StreamYard’s iOS guide |
The comparison describes documented setup and compatibility, not measured image quality or latency. Apple’s Mac webcam instructions specify iPhone; they do not establish iPad as a Continuity Camera webcam.
Use an iPhone as a camera for a Mac with Continuity Camera
Check compatibility first
Apple lists an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later for this webcam feature. Both devices need to be signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and they should be near each other. For wireless use, the Mac must not be using AirPlay or Sidecar, and the devices must not be sharing their internet connections. A USB connection requires you to trust the Mac. See Apple’s Continuity Camera guide for current requirements and setup details.
Connect and select the iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity. On some iOS versions, the setting appears under AirPlay & Handoff. Make sure Continuity Camera is enabled.
- Place the iPhone securely in a compatible mount or stand, in landscape orientation, with the rear camera unobstructed and aimed at the shot. Apple recommends mounting the iPhone; a stable position also helps avoid unwanted movement during a session.
- Open a camera-enabled app on the Mac, such as FaceTime or your streaming app. Open that app’s camera menu and select the iPhone. The exact menu location depends on the app.
- For a wired setup, connect the iPhone to the Mac using a compatible USB cable and approve any trust or accessory prompts. USB is also useful when you want to maintain charge during a long session.
- Check the framing, focus, and lighting in the actual app before going live. These checks are practical setup advice; Apple’s guide does not provide controlled image-quality comparisons.
If the iPhone does not appear
- Verify device compatibility, the Continuity Camera setting, the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and proximity.
- For wireless use, check that the Mac is not using AirPlay or Sidecar and that neither device is sharing its internet connection.
- Update both devices and the video app, then try a USB connection and approve any trust prompts.
- If the iPhone has restarted, Apple advises unlocking it once before locking it again while troubleshooting.
Connect an iPhone or iPad to OBS
OBS does not make these iPhone and iPad workflows built-in camera features. Camera for OBS Studio documents third-party USB and NDI approaches. Follow that project’s current version-specific instructions, since requirements can change.

USB: a direct wired camera feed
- Read the project’s USB setup guide and install the OBS plugin before buying its iOS app, as the project recommends.
- Install the required iOS app and plugin according to the project’s instructions, then connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- On Windows, install Apple’s device support if required by the project. Unlock the mobile device, trust the computer when prompted, and verify that the computer recognizes it.
- In OBS, add the camera input using the plugin’s documented source workflow, then check framing and audio in your scene before starting the stream.
Choose USB when the device can stay near the computer and you want a direct connection. The project recommends this route for lower latency and reliability, but its guide does not provide a measured latency figure or guarantee a particular result.
NDI: send the camera over your local network
- Review the project’s NDI setup guide and configure the iPhone or iPad and receiving computer as directed.
- Install an NDI receiving source in OBS, such as the DistroAV plugin named by the project; NDI receiving is not a direct built-in OBS feature in this workflow.
- Connect the devices to the local network and add the receiving source to your OBS scene. Check the feed for interruptions before going live.
NDI suits a camera that needs to move around the local network. Network capability and congestion affect the feed. The project recommends Ethernet for the receiving device where possible and Wi-Fi 6 or 7 for higher bitrates or resolutions; these are recommendations, not a guarantee of performance. If you need a direct, wired feed, use the USB route instead.

Host a stream directly from an iPhone or iPad
A mobile studio uses the iPhone or iPad itself to host the stream; the device is not acting as a camera peripheral for a separate computer. StreamYard documents using native Safari on iPhone or iPad and notes that native screen sharing and green screen or virtual background are unavailable in that mobile workflow. See its iOS instructions, and check the platform’s current live requirements and feature availability before relying on a particular capability. The operating-system support information on that help page may be historical.
Do not confuse direct mobile hosting with using an iPhone as a webcam in a computer-hosted studio. StreamYard’s iPhone webcam instructions describe an iPhone-to-Mac route and say iPad is not supported for that particular feature. Apple’s Continuity Camera guide also specifies iPhone for Mac webcam use.

Set up the shot and avoid unnecessary hardware
- Stabilize the device: Use an iPhone-compatible mount or steady stand, frame the shot in landscape orientation for Apple’s automatic selection guidance, and keep the rear camera clear.
- Plan for power: A compatible USB connection can keep an iPhone charging while it serves as a Mac camera. Connector compatibility varies by device.
- Do not buy an HDMI capture device by default: It is relevant when the camera source has HDMI output, not for the ordinary Continuity Camera or documented USB phone-camera setup. StreamYard’s dedicated-camera guide describes an HDMI capture device for HDMI sources.
