Yes—but only if that specific PC, encoder setup, internet connection and power supply can handle the church’s real workload. A successful test shows the computer can send a stream; it does not prove that an unspecified used PC will stay online unattended around the clock. Check the machine’s specifications, run a representative test and assess the failure points before relying on it for continuous service.
What a used office PC can—and cannot—tell you
A desktop can run streaming software such as OBS and send a live feed to YouTube. Whether a used machine can do that well depends on its exact operating system, processor, graphics hardware and encoder, as well as the stream’s resolution, frame rate, scenes and connected equipment. The label “office PC” and its age are not enough to judge.
OBS’s Windows requirements include Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, but the project warns that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See the OBS Studio system requirements.
YouTube’s advice that you do not need expensive equipment is encouragement to start, not a promise that any available computer can sustain a particular stream. YouTube also warns that a connection disruption can break a stream. A continuous stream therefore depends on more than the PC’s ability to encode video.

Check YouTube live-streaming eligibility first
Before diagnosing hardware, confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check the current YouTube live-streaming setup and eligibility guidance.
Assess the exact PC and production setup
Identify the hardware and software
- Record the PC’s make and model, processor, graphics hardware, installed operating system and available storage.
- Check that the operating system is supported by the OBS version you plan to install. A compatible graphics card does not, by itself, establish that the computer has enough performance headroom.
- Find out whether the graphics hardware supports an OBS-compatible hardware encoder. OBS says hardware encoding generally moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, but older encoder generations may deliver lower image quality than newer ones at the same bitrate. Describe the actual service workload
List what the stream will include: camera feeds, capture devices, overlays, slides or presentation software, graphics, audio sources, and any scene changes. Then decide the target resolution and frame rate. A simple static scene and a multi-camera production do not place the same demands on the PC, even at the same output resolution.
If a camera or switcher must feed the computer, verify that the PC has the necessary input path. A capture card is needed only when the existing equipment does not already provide a suitable connection; it is not a universal requirement for every stream.

Try hardware encoding, then verify the output
If the PC has a supported hardware encoder, try it as a starting point. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish initial settings, but inspect the resulting picture, audio and system load under the real scene. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work; it does not make an older PC or encoder automatically suitable.

YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoder recommendations list a video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are configuration recommendations, not measurements of the church’s internet connection or guarantees of stream quality. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom, and cautions that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Measure upload performance where the PC will actually run, preferably on the intended wired connection and at busy times—not just in a different room or during a quiet period. The figures are for video bitrate; YouTube’s headroom guidance concerns total bitrate. Do not treat an upload speed result equal to the video bitrate as sufficient. Leave the recommended margin and account for other network use at the church.
Run a representative test before depending on it
- Set up a private or unlisted test. Use the intended PC, connection, encoder, camera or capture path, scenes, overlays and audio sources.
- Match real service conditions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Include the parts of the production that are most demanding rather than testing an idle screen only.
- Check the Live Control Room. Confirm the preview appears, review stream health, verify that the event is accessible to the intended viewers, and listen and watch for audio or video problems.
- Observe the PC during the test. Look for instability, excessive load, overheating symptoms or interruptions. A short successful test is useful, but it cannot establish long-term reliability on its own.
- Monitor the stream. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality. Decide who will notice and respond if the service loses its connection or the stream stops.
For unattended operation, separately examine the used PC’s condition, cooling, power protection, operating-system update and restart behavior, network stability and encoder recovery. These are practical operational checks, not a published YouTube or OBS certification for 24/7 uptime. The available official guidance does not establish a universal reliability guarantee or failure rate for used office PCs.

The channel cannot start a live stream
Check verification and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours before concluding setup failed.
The stream drops or reports connection trouble
Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. Test the intended network connection under busy conditions; YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break the stream. Check whether other network activity or an unstable link coincides with the issue.

The video stutters or the PC struggles
Recheck the real scene complexity, output resolution and frame rate against the PC’s CPU and graphics capability. Try a supported hardware encoder and verify the result rather than assuming compatibility means sufficient performance. If needed, reduce the workload or choose a less demanding output target, then test again.
Viewers report missing audio or an inaccessible stream
Use the Live Control Room preview and a private or unlisted test to check audio, video and viewer access before the service. YouTube recommends verifying access and monitoring the quality of both audio and video.
The stream stops after a restart or interruption
Check power, PC condition, cooling, operating-system restart behavior and encoder recovery. Determine who will monitor the stream and what they will do if it does not resume. The official requirements pages do not certify an unspecified used PC for unattended 24/7 operation.
