That traffic counts toward the applicable monthly transfer allowance; if the account exceeds that allowance, overage charges may apply. The surfaced Akamai/Linode policy lists regional overage rates from $0.005 to $0.015 per GB, but check the current rate and transfer pool for your data center and account before estimating a bill.
What Linode counts as outbound transfer
When an instance pushes video to YouTube, it sends data from Linode to a destination outside the origin data center. Linode’s Network Transfer Usage and Costs documentation describes this as metered outbound transfer, over IPv4 and IPv6. In practical terms, the stream’s sustained bitrate drives the volume of data sent; the server’s advertised network speed is not the same thing as its monthly transfer allowance.
How much transfer a 24/7 stream can use
For a constant average bitrate, a useful decimal estimate for a 30-day month is:
Average bitrate in Mbps × 324 ≈ GB transferred in 30 days

These figures are arithmetic estimates for a constant bitrate, not measured Linode or YouTube usage. Leave headroom for bitrate variation, reconnects, protocol overhead, and other outbound traffic from the account. A historical Linode staff discussion of a 24/7 media-server workload also illustrates that higher bitrate raises monthly transfer use, but its reported results are anecdotal and not a current benchmark or service guarantee.
Which allowance and overage rate apply?
Do not assume the instance’s standalone allowance is the whole amount available to your account. Linode staff explanations describe monthly transfer allowances as pooled across services, so other active services can use some of the same headroom. Check Cloud Manager for the account’s current pool and consumption, and check current plan details for the applicable included transfer.
The surfaced Network Transfer Usage and Costs policy lists these overage rates for transfer beyond the applicable monthly allotment:

These are source-reported rates from the policy accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed quote for every plan or account. Regional coverage, plan allowances, and pricing may change. Older community replies cite different rates; use the current policy and your Cloud Manager account rather than treating historical figures as current pricing.

What happens if the account exceeds its allowance?
Staff guidance says excess transfer may be billed rather than automatically cut off: the allowance is not a hard limit that stops outbound traffic. Monitor usage in Cloud Manager and compare projected stream transfer with the account-wide pool before starting a continuous broadcast. If your projection approaches the remaining pool, reduce the stream’s average bitrate or account for the possible overage using the current regional rate.
