To loop a church sermon on YouTube Live, make the repeat happen in the video encoder—not with YouTube’s viewer-side Loop button. In OBS Studio, enable Loop for a single Media Source, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for multiple sermons. Then send the encoder’s output to YouTube Live and test the transitions. These settings repeat playback, but do not guarantee frame-perfect, gap-free changes between files.
Why YouTube’s Loop button will not loop a live stream
YouTube’s viewer-side Loop control repeats a video or playlist for an individual viewer during ordinary YouTube playback. It does not turn recorded sermons into a live broadcast. For a YouTube Live loop, OBS or another encoder must repeat the sermon in its outgoing video feed. YouTube receives that feed through the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect an encoder; YouTube’s viewer-loop instructions cover the separate playback control.
Set up a sermon loop in OBS
1. Prepare the videos
Put the sermon files on the computer running OBS, and decide their playback order. OBS documents common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Use one file for a single sermon loop; use a playlist if several sermons should play in sequence. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes adding audio and video files to a scene.
2. Choose the right source and enable looping
- One sermon: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop. OBS defines this option as replaying the file after playback completes.
- Several sermons: Add a VLC Video source, add the files in the intended order, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Leave shuffle off if the sermons need to play in a fixed order.
Check the source’s activation and visibility behavior. Settings such as restarting playback when a source becomes active or closing a file when it is inactive can affect playback if the source is hidden or deactivated. Keep the source visible in the program output, and make sure a title card or church branding does not cover it or cause it to stop.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and open Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the appropriate YouTube connection method, and enter the stream details if OBS asks for them. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Start streaming from OBS. YouTube creates the watch page once the encoder starts sending its feed. For a scheduled stream, check the Live Control Room preview and select Go live when ready.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Use a protocol supported by your encoder, and do not change advanced encoder settings without checking their compatibility. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
4. Test a complete cycle before broadcasting
Run at least one full playback cycle before the public stream. Watch the YouTube preview and check the sound, file order, aspect ratio, and each boundary between sermons. A brief pause, black frame, or audio discontinuity can occur at a file change: OBS’s loop documentation describes playback controls but does not promise seamless or frame-perfect transitions. Test the actual files and setup rather than assuming the setting removes every gap.

Improve reliability during a long broadcast
Allow upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth about 20% above the total stream bitrate. This is an operational recommendation, not a measured guarantee; network disruption can still interrupt a stream. Check the connection while the stream is running and avoid consuming the available upload capacity with other activity where possible. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder guidance.
Preview and monitor the stream
Use Live Control Room to preview the feed, review stream-health messages, and monitor audio and video throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. A static sermon slide or quiet section may behave differently from a moving video with full audio, so make the test representative.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Consider a backup encoder only if the operation needs it
A backup encoder is an optional resilience measure, not a requirement for a basic sermon loop. If you configure one, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup. A backup that has never been tested should not be treated as proven protection.
Single sermon or playlist?
| Approach | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | Repeating one sermon file | File playback, source visibility and activation behavior, and the transition when playback restarts. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Repeating several sermons in a chosen sequence | VLC is installed, files are in the right order, shuffle is off if order matters, and transitions between files are acceptable. |
Both approaches keep playback in the encoder’s output. Neither documented loop control promises gapless transitions. Compare other encoder-supported playlist workflows by order control, shuffle, restart behavior, local resource use, and transition quality.

Ending, archiving, and scheduling
You can end a live stream by stopping the content from the encoder; YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions also describe clicking End stream and stopping the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and account settings before planning a longer broadcast. YouTube’s stream settings documentation also describes auto-start and auto-stop controls. Verify how they are configured for the selected stream before relying on them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and fixes
- The sermon plays once and stops: For one file, confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For multiple files, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- The playlist does not appear as an OBS source: Install VLC, which OBS requires for its VLC Video source, then check OBS again.
- A sermon is skipped, order changes, or playback restarts unexpectedly: Confirm the playlist order, turn off shuffle when order matters, and review source visibility, restart-on-activation, and close-file-when-inactive behavior.
- There is a gap, black frame, or audio break between sermons: Inspect the affected file boundary in the actual YouTube preview. The loop setting does not guarantee seamless transitions; test the media and scene arrangement before going public.
- YouTube shows a poor stream-health status or the feed drops: Check Live Control Room messages, confirm the encoder is sending to the correct stream, and assess whether upload bandwidth has the recommended headroom. Network disruption can break the stream.
- The public watch page is not ready: Confirm OBS has started sending the feed and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, select Go live when the preview is ready.
Copyright and YouTube Live checks for church sermons
Before streaming, confirm the church has the rights or permissions needed for every element in the recording, including music, performance, slides, and any third-party video. A sermon recording being appropriate for worship does not by itself establish that all included material is cleared for a public live broadcast. Review YouTube’s current rules and account notices in Studio; this workflow does not guarantee that a stream will avoid copyright claims or other platform action. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
