A screenshot API can capture a page behind a login if you give its browser authentication the site accepts—usually a valid session cookie, HTTP Basic credentials, or an Authorization header. If the site requires filling out a login form or handling several authentication steps, use browser automation such as Playwright to sign in, retain the browser state, and then capture the page.
Choose the method that matches the login
First identify how the site authenticates you. A screenshot request without valid credentials or session state will generally show the login page, not the protected content. Use an account and session you are authorized to access.
- Session cookie: Use a hosted API that accepts cookies when you already have a current session cookie.
- HTTP Basic authentication: Use a provider that exposes Basic Auth credentials as a request option.
- Token authentication: Supply the target site’s token in an Authorization header if the provider lets its browser send custom headers.
- Interactive login: Use browser automation when the site requires form submission, redirects, multiple steps, or browser-specific behavior.
A provider’s own API key is separate from the credentials needed to sign in to the target site. Keep the two distinct.
Use a hosted screenshot API for cookie- or header-based access
A hosted API is convenient when the provider can pass the target site’s required cookie or header to its browser. Request fields differ by provider; do not assume that one service’s parameter names work on another.

For example, Cloudflare Browser Run documents a screenshot endpoint that accepts a destination URL and cookie array, with cookie name, value, domain, and path. Its documentation also describes HTTP Basic authentication through an authenticate object and token-based authentication through setExtraHTTPHeaders. It documents navigation waits and timeouts, viewport sizing, full-page capture, and CSS selector capture. Conceptually, the request must include the destination URL and the authentication material in the format the provider expects. For a cookie, verify its domain and path match the protected page. For a token, put the target site’s token in the browser’s Authorization header. Avoid placing credentials in public scripts, logs, or shared request examples.
Use Playwright for an interactive login
When a login requires browser actions, automate the flow in a browser context, save the authenticated state, then load that state in a later run before navigating to the protected URL. The following Node.js example is a starting point for a site with conventional username and password fields; replace the URL and selectors with the site’s actual values. The site may require additional steps such as a one-time code, and those should only be automated where permitted.

})();Store the state file somewhere private, exclude it from source control, and restrict access to it: it may contain cookies and headers that can be used to impersonate the account. Playwright’s standard storage-state workflow covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and virtual WebAuthn passkeys. It does not automatically persist sessionStorage; if the application depends on sessionStorage, save and restore it explicitly. See Playwright authentication guidance.
Reuse the state for the capture by creating a context from it, then wait for the page’s actual content before taking the screenshot:

Wait for the protected content and verify the image
A successful navigation or API response does not prove that the capture contains the signed-in page. Dashboards may render data after the initial document loads. Prefer a page-specific selector that appears only when the target content is ready; use a provider’s supported navigation wait or timeout as a secondary measure. Then inspect the result for a login screen, expired-session message, blank area, or partially rendered content.
Choose the capture scope that serves the task: viewport for the visible screen, full-page for a long document, or a selector for one component. A selector capture can reduce irrelevant material, but it cannot fix an authentication or readiness failure.

- Keep cookies, bearer tokens, passwords, and saved browser state out of source control and public examples.
- Do not log full request headers or cookie values; limit who can access credentials and state files.
- Refresh saved state when the session expires, and avoid reusing state beyond its intended account or environment.
- Check whether the screenshot exposes personal, account, or confidential information before storing or sharing it.

Troubleshoot a wrong or incomplete capture
- The screenshot shows the login page: Check that the credential is current and is actually reaching the browser. For cookies, confirm name, value, domain, and path; for token auth, confirm the Authorization header is set on the browser request. In Playwright, confirm the saved state belongs to the correct site origin and has not expired.
- The page redirects or reports an expired session: Sign in again and save fresh state. Sites may expire or revoke sessions; a stale cookie cannot be repaired by changing screenshot options.
- The page is blank or only partly rendered: Wait for a page-specific content selector or application-ready state rather than relying only on the initial navigation response. Check for delayed charts or data requests.
- Session-dependent state disappears in Playwright: Determine whether the app relies on sessionStorage. The regular storage-state file does not automatically include it, so explicitly persist and restore it if needed.
- Credentials work locally but not in the hosted API: Compare the provider’s required cookie/header format and supported browser options. A hosted service does not necessarily support every authentication mechanism or interactive flow.

Does a screenshot API key sign me in to the website I am capturing?
No. The API key authorizes your request to the screenshot service; the target site requires its own accepted login credentials or session.
Can I capture a page protected by a one-time code or passkey?
It depends on the site’s flow and the capture method. An interactive browser workflow may handle permitted steps, but a request-only API may not; confirm the provider’s supported authentication options.
