To capture a page without its cookie banner, use a browser automation workflow: open the URL, locate and click the site’s consent control, confirm the banner is gone, then take the screenshot. A basic screenshot API renders a URL but may not support pre-capture clicks; supplying cookies is not the same as dismissing a banner. The Screenshot API documentation reviewed here lists a cookies parameter but no consent-button interaction option. Screenshot API documentation
Use browser automation when the capture must click the page
A cookie banner is usually an HTML element in the page, so the automation needs to interact with its control before capture. The exact button name and selector vary by site. Browserless demonstrates a sequence of waiting for the page, checking likely controls, clicking a visible match, and capturing afterward; its selectors are examples, not universal rules. Browserless: Auto-accept cookie consent banners
Playwright example
This illustrative JavaScript uses Playwright-style calls. Replace the example locator and wait conditions with selectors and behavior confirmed on the target site. It is not a universal selector or a tested guarantee.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
const targetUrl = 'https://example.com';
try {
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 30000 });
// Use a site-specific locator when possible; labels differ across sites.
const consent = page.getByRole('button', {
name: /accept (all )?cookies|agree|reject/i
});
if (await consent.isVisible().catch(() => false)) {
await consent.click();
await consent.waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 5000 }).catch(() => {});
}
// Capture the full scrollable page; omit fullPage for a viewport capture.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the environment running the script before executing it. The example treats a missing banner as a normal case. For a production capture, verify after clicking that the overlay disappeared or that the intended consent state took effect; merely finding a button is not proof that the page updated.

Use the control that matches the task. “Accept all,” “reject,” and “manage preferences” can produce different stored states and therefore different page behavior. Do not automatically accept consent if the task requires a particular choice. Inspect the target’s DOM or accessibility tree and prefer a locator tied to its actual label or stable markup over generic substring selectors.
Find and verify the right control
There is no standard selector shared by every consent banner. Browserless gives examples such as selectors containing “accept,” OneTrust’s accept-button ID, and .cc-accept; these are starting points only. A banner may load late, use custom controls, live in a frame, or save the choice asynchronously. Browserless’s examples and caveats
- Open the target page and wait for the page state appropriate to that site.
networkidlecan be unsuitable for pages that keep network requests open, so choose a wait condition based on observed behavior. - Inspect the consent panel’s accessible name, role, frame, or DOM selector. Prefer a specific locator for the target site.
- Check whether the control is visible before clicking. If it is absent, proceed with the capture rather than failing the entire job, unless a banner is required for the test.
- After clicking, wait for the overlay to disappear or assert the relevant page state. A short fixed delay can help with an observed transition but cannot guarantee that an asynchronous consent save has completed.
- Capture the viewport or full page according to what the result needs to show.
Cookie parameters do not click consent buttons
A renderer’s cookie option supplies cookie values; it does not itself click a control or prove that a site will treat a particular cookie as accepted consent. The reviewed Screenshot API docs describe cookies in name=value form for the target host, but do not document a pre-capture interaction parameter. Only use a manually supplied consent cookie when you have verified the specific site’s cookie name, value, scope, and behavior.
The same docs describe an HTTP GET screenshot endpoint and render settings including viewport dimensions, full-page mode, image format, quality, scale, dark mode, delay, headers, basic authentication, and timeout. Documented defaults and limits at the time accessed in 2026 include a 1280-by-800 CSS-pixel viewport, maximum width 3840 and height 4320, full-page height capped at 4320 pixels, delay defaulting to 0 with a documented maximum of 10,000 ms, and timeout defaulting to 25 seconds within a 1–30 second range. These are vendor specifications and may change; check the current docs before relying on a limit. Screenshot API parameters

Distinguish an HTML banner from a JavaScript dialog
A consent panel rendered within the page is handled with a locator and click. Browser-managed JavaScript dialogs such as alert, confirm, prompt, or beforeunload use Playwright’s dialog event instead. If you register a dialog listener, it must accept or dismiss the dialog or the page can remain blocked; without a listener, Playwright automatically dismisses JavaScript dialogs. Playwright page dialog documentation
Capture the viewport or the full page
A viewport screenshot records what is visible within the configured browser dimensions. A full-page screenshot extends to the scrollable page content, which is useful when the relevant material is below the fold. Playwright supports full-page capture, and the reviewed Screenshot API documentation also exposes a full-page option, subject to its documented height cap. Playwright screenshot documentation

Late animations or content can make a capture premature. Prefer waiting for a meaningful selector or page state; use a delay only when you have observed that the page needs settling time. The Screenshot API’s documented delay is a renderer setting, not a substitute for clicking a consent control. Screenshot API documentation

Troubleshoot failed or cluttered captures
- The banner remains: Confirm the locator matches the actual button and that it is visible. Check whether the panel is inside an iframe, whether the site uses a different consent label, or whether clicking opens a preferences panel rather than dismissing it.
- The script hangs on navigation: A page may never reach network idle because it keeps requests open. Use an appropriate navigation milestone, then wait for the specific content or consent interface your capture depends on.
- The banner disappears and returns: The site may save consent asynchronously, or a later-loaded script may reopen the panel. Wait for the intended state and verify it before capture.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check that navigation completed, the page is not blocked by a bot check or authentication wall, and the capture is not taken before content renders. Increase a timeout only when the page needs it and the service permits it.
- Full-page capture cuts off content: Check the browser or service’s full-page behavior and any maximum height. The Screenshot API documentation accessed in 2026 specifies a 4320-pixel full-page height cap.
- A native dialog blocks the page: Handle Playwright’s
dialogevent and explicitly accept or dismiss it if a listener is installed. Do not treat it as an HTML cookie banner.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It provides clean shots by accepting cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removing 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
