Create a separate OBS scene for each sermon layout, start one YouTube stream from OBS, and switch scenes while that encoder feed stays live. A scene transition changes what viewers see; it does not end the YouTube stream.
How the scene switch works
An OBS scene is a layout assembled from sources, such as a camera, text, and graphics. You can create one scene for each sermon layout and switch which scene is live. OBS’s official Overview Guide explains that you can create and name as many scenes as you need.
The scene transition is separate from stopping the encoder feed or ending the YouTube live event. YouTube’s encoder instructions treat those as end-of-broadcast actions; changing scenes does not require them.
Set up two sermon scenes in OBS
- Create the first scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene and give it a clear name, such as “Sermon—Speaker.” Add the sources that layout needs, for example the camera and any title or graphics.
- Create the second scene. Add another scene for the alternate layout, such as “Sermon—Slides.” Add the sources appropriate to that view. Scene contents can differ; the point is to prepare each layout before switching live.
- Choose a transition. Select Cut for an immediate change or Fade for a gradual one. OBS lets you configure transition duration. Rehearse the chosen transition with your actual sources.
- Decide how to trigger the change. You can select a scene, use Quick Transitions, or assign and use a hotkey. Pick a method the service operator can use reliably.
- Use Studio Mode if you want to preview first. Studio Mode keeps the current live scene visible while you prepare the other scene in the edit area. When it is ready, use Transition to put it on air.
Connect OBS to YouTube and keep one feed live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live event and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup uses these to connect OBS to the event.
- Enter the stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, then start streaming from OBS.
- Check the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room before the service. Once the feed is live, switch between the prepared OBS scenes as needed without stopping the encoder.
- When the broadcast is over, follow YouTube’s end-of-event workflow: stop the encoder feed and end the stream. A scene change alone is not the end-of-stream procedure.
Choose a transition and operating method
| Choice | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Changes scenes immediately. | The sermon layout should change at once. |
| Fade | Changes scenes over a configured duration. | A gradual visual change suits the service. |
| Scene selection | Makes the selected scene live, subject to the active transition. | The operator wants a direct, visible control. |
| Quick Transition | Triggers a transition using OBS’s Quick Transitions controls. | The operator prefers a dedicated transition control. |
| Hotkey | Triggers the assigned scene or transition action from the keyboard. | The operator has rehearsed the key assignment and can use it confidently. |
| Studio Mode | Lets the operator prepare a scene while the current live scene remains on air; Transition then takes the prepared scene live. | The operator wants to inspect a layout before viewers see it. |
Rehearse and monitor the service
Before the service, preview the YouTube event and test both scenes using the real sources. After each change, check that the expected video and sermon audio are present. During the broadcast, keep monitoring audio and video; YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend preview checks and continuous monitoring.

- Test the selected transition and the operator’s chosen trigger.
- In Studio Mode, verify that the prepared scene is the one you intend to take live before pressing Transition.
- Check audio after every scene change. This is a practical check for this setup, not a claim that scene switching necessarily interrupts audio.
Common problems and fixes
- The YouTube stream ends when changing scenes: Scene switching should not require ending the event. Keep the OBS encoder feed running; use YouTube’s stop-feed and end-stream workflow only when the broadcast is over.
- The wrong layout appears: Confirm which scene is live. If using Studio Mode, check the prepared scene in the edit area before selecting Transition.
- The change is too abrupt or too slow: Switch between Cut and Fade, or adjust the configured transition duration, then rehearse again.
- The transition does not trigger as expected: Try selecting the scene directly or using Quick Transitions. If using a hotkey, check its assignment and practice it before going live.
- Video or audio is missing after a change: Inspect the sources in that scene and verify both audio and video in the YouTube preview and during rehearsal.
- The event is not receiving the OBS feed: Recheck the stream URL and stream key entered in OBS, then confirm the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is not a replacement for these OBS scene changes: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube and does not go live from a camera. For a prerecorded sermon or other uploaded video that should play continuously, the workflow is different: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
