Choose by measuring the actual route from your broadcaster or relay server to YouTube Live ingest, then account for stream stability, your viewers’ needs, and YouTube’s latency setting. A server’s location alone does not determine end-to-end playback delay.
What “low latency” means for a YouTube live stream
There are two different delays to consider. Source-to-ingest delay is the network time for your encoder or relay server to send video to YouTube. Viewer latency is the end-to-end delay from capture to playback, which also includes YouTube processing and the viewer’s player buffer. YouTube defines stream latency as “the delay between your camera capturing an event and the event being displayed to viewers.” YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency
A Hetzner region can affect the network path to ingest when the Hetzner server is the source, but it does not by itself set the viewer’s playback delay. YouTube says a lower-latency setting leaves less read-ahead buffer, increasing the chance viewers feel problems between encoder and player. Network congestion can delay a stream even when its average bitrate is sustainable.
Hetzner Cloud locations to consider
Hetzner lists six Cloud locations across four network zones: Falkenstein (fsn1), Nuremberg (nbg1), and Helsinki (hel1) are in eu-central; Ashburn, Virginia (ash) is in us-east; Hillsboro, Oregon (hil) is in us-west; and Singapore (sin) is in ap-southeast. Availability can vary, and cloud instances may occasionally be unavailable. A location and an availability zone are not the same thing: Hetzner’s API documentation distinguishes a server’s availability zone from its network zone and says datacenters within a location are connected by very low-latency links. That describes intra-location connectivity, not the route from a location to YouTube ingest. Hetzner Cloud API documentation

| Network zone | Hetzner Cloud locations listed | Pricing and traffic note |
|---|---|---|
| eu-central | Falkenstein (fsn1), Nuremberg (nbg1), Helsinki (hel1) | Hetzner says prices are the same within this zone. |
| us-east | Ashburn, Virginia (ash) | Pricing differs by network zone; traffic between network zones is billed as normal internet traffic. |
| us-west | Hillsboro, Oregon (hil) | Pricing differs by network zone; traffic between network zones is billed as normal internet traffic. |
| ap-southeast | Singapore (sin) | Pricing differs by network zone; traffic between network zones is billed as normal internet traffic. |
Check Hetzner’s current location and product-availability information before deploying, since availability may change. The documented pricing distinction is by network zone; the official location information does not provide a YouTube ingest performance comparison among these locations.
How to choose the right location for your workflow
If one broadcaster sends directly to YouTube
Test the route from the actual broadcaster network if that is where encoding happens. If a Hetzner server encodes or relays the stream, test from that server instead. The more useful location is the one that provides a reliable sustained upload path to YouTube Live ingest for your protocol and stream, not simply the one closest to your viewers on a map.

If your production team or relays span regions
Compare routes from each source or relay that will send video, and include the operational complexity and cost of moving traffic between Hetzner network zones. Crossing zones is billed as normal internet traffic. A single “best” region may not fit a multi-source workflow.
If your audience is spread across countries
Do not assume that placing the origin near the largest audience guarantees lower YouTube playback latency for everyone. Hetzner’s CDN explainer describes the general model in which viewers may receive content from geographically distributed edge servers rather than directly from an origin. This is a general CDN explanation, not a guarantee about YouTube’s internal live-stream routing. Hetzner: What is a CDN?

Benchmark candidate locations instead of guessing
- Identify the actual sending point. Determine whether the video is sent from a home or studio encoder, a Hetzner server, or a relay. Test from that network and machine; a test from elsewhere does not describe the production route.
- Use the real protocol and ingest destination. Compare each candidate with the same YouTube Live ingest endpoint and the protocol your workflow will use. A generic ping to a nearby public host is not a measurement of the complete streaming path.
- Measure more than a momentary latency reading. Record route delay, packet loss, and sustained upload stability during representative periods, including the times you expect to stream. An occasional good result cannot establish reliable continuous performance.
- Run a representative stream. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate long enough to reveal instability. Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and whether the stream remains stable, rather than choosing solely from a brief connection test.
- Compare total operating fit. Consider the broadcaster-to-server path, server-to-ingest path, location availability, regional price, cross-zone traffic, and the latency mode and resolution you need. Repeat tests if the workload, route, or provider availability changes.
The official material establishes Hetzner’s location and network-zone distinctions and YouTube’s latency-mode behavior; it does not publish head-to-head YouTube ingest measurements for the six Hetzner locations. A specific winner therefore depends on your measured route and workflow.
Choose YouTube latency mode for the audience interaction you need
| YouTube mode | When YouTube recommends it | Trade-off and resolution note |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive streams | More read-ahead buffer; YouTube recommends it when real-time interaction is not important. |
| Low latency | Limited interaction | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds; buffering risk is higher than with Normal latency. 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive, real-time engagement | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds; the smaller buffer can make buffering more likely. 4K is not supported. |
The “under 10 seconds” and “under five seconds” figures are YouTube’s stated typical viewer outcomes, not guarantees and not results tied to any Hetzner region. If 4K is essential, the two lower-latency modes are not suitable; choose Normal latency and prioritize a stable path.

Common location-selection mistakes and fixes
- Choosing the nearest region to viewers: audience proximity alone does not establish the source-to-ingest route or YouTube’s viewer delivery path. Benchmark from the sending point and assess playback separately.
- Treating ping as a complete stream test: a low ping does not show sustained upload stability or packet loss under the real stream. Test the actual protocol and workload over representative periods.
- Confusing network zone with availability zone: the terms describe different placement concepts in Hetzner’s API. Confirm the intended location and zone when provisioning rather than inferring one from the other.
- Using a lower YouTube latency mode to mask a poor route: lower modes reduce buffering headroom; they do not repair packet loss or congestion. Improve the sending path first, and use a higher-latency mode if viewer interaction does not require a short delay.
- Assuming a location has a permanent, available instance: Hetzner says product availability can vary. Check current availability before committing the workflow to a region.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping, pre-recorded YouTube stream rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing a Hetzner server: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not camera-based live production. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
