Test a foldable website at more than one viewport: check the compact outer display, the expanded inner display, orientation changes, and any book or tabletop layouts your site intends to support. Start with Chrome DevTools, use Android Emulator for repeatable fold-and-unfold checks, then validate important journeys on a real foldable or a real-device service. Pay particular attention to content and controls near a hinge or segment boundary, and make sure the site remains usable without fold-specific browser APIs.

1. Establish the responsive baseline in Chrome DevTools

Begin with the page’s ordinary responsive behavior before testing fold-specific states. In Chrome, open the page, open DevTools, and turn on Device Mode with the device toolbar. Use responsive dimensions to test narrow and wide viewports around the breakpoints that matter to your layout. Inspect media queries and look for unintended horizontal overflow, clipped content, text that becomes difficult to read, or controls that are hard to reach. Chrome documents responsive dimensions and media-query inspection in Device Mode.

Do not treat a reported viewport for one foldable model as a universal breakpoint. The usable window can vary with device, browser, display settings, and how much of the screen an app or browser window occupies. Prefer content-driven breakpoints, and test the width ranges relevant to your site rather than building around a single model’s dimensions.

2. Test compact, expanded, and changing states

A foldable is a set of display states, not simply a phone-sized screen that becomes a tablet-sized screen. Test the compact outer display and expanded inner display separately. Where available, use DevTools’ device toolbar controls for folded/continuous posture and single- or dual-screen emulation. The available choices depend on the emulated device and Chrome version; see the Chrome DevTools documentation.

For repeatable Android checks, create or select a foldable hardware profile in Android Emulator and use its fold/unfold controls. The Android Emulator documentation describes foldable profiles and posture controls.

Check the page both after loading into each state and after changing state while it is open. Confirm that layout reflows sensibly, scroll position remains reasonable, form data is retained, and open menus, dialogs, or sticky controls remain usable. Also test portrait and landscape where relevant. A wider viewport should not merely stretch a compact phone layout if that creates awkward reading lines or oversized gaps.

3. Inspect the hinge and screen segments

On devices with a visible hinge or separated display segments, inspect where content falls in relation to the boundary. Check headings, paragraphs, images, video, dialogs, menus, and interactive controls. Avoid placing essential text or tap targets where the hinge or segment split makes them uncomfortable to read or use.

If the design deliberately uses two panes, give each pane a clear purpose and verify that the same content still works on a continuous screen. Chrome’s article on foldable web APIs explains viewport segments as logical regions divided by hardware features such as a fold or hinge, and describes CSS environment variables for segment dimensions and positions. That article documents APIs in an experimental origin-trial context, including Chrome 125 through 128; it is useful design background, not evidence of universal current browser support.

Android’s foldable app quality guidance asks testers to consider postures such as book and tabletop and whether interface elements move to useful positions. Translate those prompts into browser-page checks where they apply. Samsung’s foldable testing guidance discusses app-focused areas such as continuity, multi-active windows, and Flex mode. Those are useful prompts for a site’s relevant browser experiences, not requirements for every ordinary web page; app-specific behaviors such as app continuity or multi-instance should not be treated as universal website requirements.

5. Choose the right mix of emulation and real-device testing

Approach Best use Main limitation
Chrome DevTools Device Mode Fast responsive-width, media-query, dual-screen, and posture iteration. Emulation does not prove real browser or device behavior, and supported device options can change. Chrome DevTools documentation.
Android Emulator Repeatable Android fold/unfold and screen-configuration checks. It remains simulated hardware. Android Emulator documentation.
Physical foldable phone Browser, touch, and hardware validation for a specific device. One model and browser combination cannot represent all foldables.
Real-device service or device farm Access to selected real models without purchasing each one. Catalog, availability, and service terms vary by vendor; verify them before relying on a service. Android points to Firebase Test Lab or similar services for access to real devices, including foldables. Android foldable app quality guidance.

Use emulation for broad, quick iteration, then validate the highest-risk pages on hardware or a real-device service where practical. Real devices can expose differences in touch behavior, browser implementation, and hinge characteristics that simulation does not establish. If foldable traffic is meaningful for your site, use your own audience data to select devices and browsers, and keep a short repeatable smoke-test list for core tasks. You do not need to own every model to begin testing: the DevTools and emulator workflow covers many layout and state checks before hardware validation.

6. Keep ordinary page behavior independent of fold APIs

Do not make basic navigation, reading, forms, or checkout depend on experimental posture or viewport-segment APIs. The cited Chrome article documents an origin trial for the Device Posture and Viewport Segments APIs from Chrome 125 through 128 and describes local experiments enabled by a flag; that historical status does not establish a current cross-browser compatibility picture. Treat fold-aware APIs as an optional enhancement, and preserve a useful responsive layout when they are unavailable.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot of a page at a chosen URL rather than interactive fold-state testing, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not replace testing actual fold postures, touch behavior, or device-specific browser rendering.

For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters. Cookie banners and consent prompts are accepted or removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; these cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Troubleshooting common foldable test failures

  • Content overflows on the outer display: Recheck the narrow responsive widths around the affected breakpoint, then adjust the layout based on content needs rather than a single model’s reported dimensions.
  • A menu or dialog becomes awkward after unfolding: Open it before and after changing posture. Review its positioning and focus behavior for the new viewport, and ensure it does not cover the hinge-adjacent content or controls users need.
  • Form entries or scroll position are lost during a state change: Repeat the transition with a partially completed form and mid-page scroll. Treat state retention and recovery as part of the site’s own behavior, not something emulation guarantees.
  • Two-pane layout works only in dual-screen emulation: Check it on a continuous expanded viewport as well. Keep a sensible single-flow layout when segment information is absent.
  • An API-driven enhancement does not appear: Verify whether the browser and configuration expose the experimental capability before relying on it; keep the core page functional without it.
  • The emulator looks correct but a device does not: Validate the affected journey on a physical foldable or a real-device service, since emulated hardware does not establish real touch, browser, or hinge behavior.
