There is no single best Linode region for every 24/7 YouTube livestream. Start with a core region close to the largest share of your viewers—or close to the processing, storage, or control services your stream depends on—then test candidate regions from representative networks and verify that they offer the plans and services you need. A region’s name alone does not guarantee low latency or uninterrupted streaming.
How to choose a region for a continuous stream
Choose based on the complete path your workload needs, not a map pin in isolation. Consider where viewers are concentrated, where the stream originates, and where any processing, storage, or control services run. Geographic proximity can help connection speed, but the best location depends on network paths and the actual workload. Akamai’s data-center guidance recommends comparing locations with repeated measurements rather than treating one result as decisive.
- Viewer geography: Identify the countries or cities that account for most of your audience. If viewers are spread across regions, compare candidate locations against the audience distribution rather than optimizing for one viewer.
- Workload geography: Include the location of the encoder or ingest source and any processing, storage, and control services. A region that is convenient for viewers may not be best for those other connections.
- Service and plan availability: Confirm that the required compute plan, storage, and other services are available in each candidate region. Availability and pricing can vary by location.
- Operational resilience: Decide how the stream will be monitored and restored if its server or data center becomes unavailable. A region is not itself a recovery plan.
Shortlist locations by audience geography
For an India-centered audience
Akamai identifies its Chennai and Mumbai core sites as optimized for the India market. These are sensible candidates to measure for an India-centered stream, not a universal ranking of YouTube livestream performance. If the workload serves a wider Asia-Pacific audience or needs to communicate with Akamai core sites outside India, Akamai recommends considering Singapore or Sydney as well. For audiences elsewhere
Build a shortlist of eligible core regions near the largest viewer concentrations and near critical services your stream must reach. The available guidance does not establish a best region for every country or audience mix. Use the shortlist as a starting point for measurements, not as a substitute for them.

Measure candidate regions before committing
Test from networks and locations that represent your likely audience and workload. Akamai warns that congestion, connection speeds, and throughput vary, and recommends averaging three or five readings and testing on weekdays and weekends. Do not treat one ping or speed test as a reliable verdict; your own results will depend on where and when you test.
- Choose candidates: Select a few eligible core regions based on audience geography, workload connections, and service availability.
- Test representative paths: Measure from relevant audience locations and from the systems that will connect to the server. Compare the paths your actual stream depends on.
- Repeat at different times: Take three or five readings per comparison, average them, and repeat on weekdays and weekends, following Akamai’s measurement guidance.
- Compare more than latency: Record latency and throughput alongside service availability, plan and price, operational status, and recovery options.
- Recheck volatile details: Before deployment, confirm current regional inventory, service and plan availability, pricing, and status in Akamai’s region inventory and compute availability documentation.
Core regions, distributed sites, and media workloads
Core regions for compute- and storage-heavy work
Akamai characterizes core sites as appropriate for media storage and transcoding, which can demand substantial compute and storage. That does not mean every part of a stream should run in one place: consider ingest, processing, storage, and viewer delivery separately when selecting locations. Distributed compute regions are conditional
Akamai lists live streaming as a possible distributed-compute use case, but these sites are not a general replacement for a core region. They have limited availability, require an existing deployment to one or more core regions, require a Dedicated CPU plan, and support only a subset of cloud services. Check current eligibility and whether the exact services your workflow needs are supported before considering this option. Akamai describes the constraints in its distributed compute regions guide.
Plan for recovery across data centers
Akamai says each region corresponds to one physical data center and does not provide built-in multi-site high availability. For a 24/7 workload, design monitoring and recovery explicitly; if continued operation through a data-center outage matters, consider a tested secondary-region plan. Confirm that the services and configuration needed for recovery are available at the alternate location.

Akamai’s Compute Service Level Addendum, version 1.2, updated February 20, 2026 and effective February 27, 2026, specifies 99.99% monthly uptime for covered services in general availability and 99% for covered instances in limited availability. These figures are subject to service exemptions and agreement terms; they are not an end-to-end guarantee that a YouTube livestream will remain live. Verify that the specific instance and service are covered and review the exclusions before relying on an SLA figure.
