For most modern sites, adding multiple CDN subdomains is not a reliable way to reduce load time. HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 can handle many requests over a connection, so the old reason for splitting assets across hostnames is weaker; extra hostnames can add DNS lookups and connection setup. Start with CDN caching and delivery configuration, then test sharding only if measurements on your own pages show a repeatable benefit.
What multiple CDN subdomains are meant to do
Domain sharding means serving assets from several hostnames—for example, cdn1.example.com and cdn2.example.com—instead of one shared asset hostname. Historically, browsers limited the number of simultaneous connections to a domain. Splitting assets across hostnames could therefore allow more downloads to happen at once. MDN describes this as the original rationale for domain sharding: MDN, “Domain sharding – Glossary”.
That rationale does not automatically apply to a modern site. HTTP/2 multiplexes multiple requests over one connection, reducing the need to create extra hostnames just to increase parallel downloads. The U.S. Web Design System’s HTTP/2 Performance Guide states: “Do not use the domain splitting technique.”
Why extra subdomains can make a page slower
A browser may have to resolve each additional hostname and establish transport connections to it. Depending on the connection and protocol, that can mean added DNS, TCP, and TLS setup work before assets arrive. Cloudflare’s explanation of HTTP/2 discusses these costs and notes that splitting requests across domains also limits the browser’s ability to prioritize streams together: Cloudflare, “HTTP/2 For Web Developers”.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- More setup: A new hostname can require DNS resolution and a separate connection.
- Less coordinated delivery: With HTTP/2, scattering assets across connections can undermine stream prioritization.
- More configuration: Each hostname must be routed and secured correctly, including valid TLS coverage.
Consequently, sharding can trade a theoretical concurrency gain for real connection overhead. The balance depends on the page, network, browser, and negotiated protocol; there is no universal hostname count that guarantees faster loading.
Separate the benefit of a CDN from the benefit of sharding
A CDN can improve delivery by serving eligible, cached content from an edge location closer to a visitor and reducing trips back to the origin. That is a benefit of CDN placement and cache behavior, not of multiplying subdomains. Cloudflare’s CDN reference architecture describes edge and tiered caching.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
A hostname alone does not mean assets are cached at the edge. For example, Cloudflare says DNS-only, unproxied records are not cached by its service; its troubleshooting guidance also notes that subdomains outside its CDN do not receive its caching benefits. Check Cloudflare’s cache setup guidance and common CDN issues and fixes for the applicable configuration.
What to optimize before adding hostnames
- Ensure static assets are routed through the CDN and are cache-eligible.
- Review cache behavior and whether repeat visits or edge hits avoid origin requests.
- Evaluate supported protocol options. Google Cloud’s CDN best practices recommend enabling HTTP/3 where supported, but this is an option to assess, not a guaranteed speedup for every site: Google Cloud, “Content delivery best practices”.
- Consider request coalescing to limit simultaneous cache-fill requests to the origin, as described in the same Google Cloud guidance.
When domain sharding might be worth testing
Do not treat HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 as proof that sharding can never help. An Akamai paper on sharding for lossy cellular networks reports a 12% median page-load-time improvement in good network conditions for its tested HTTP/2 setup. This is a result from that paper’s experiment, not a general prediction for other sites. Its discussion also cautions that pages with hundreds of small objects may lose the benefit because multiple connections add TCP/TLS setup latency: Akamai, “Domain-Sharding for Faster HTTP/2 in Lossy Cellular Networks”.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Use sharding only when controlled tests on your own representative pages show repeatable improvement for the audiences that matter, and when that gain justifies the added hostname and TLS maintenance.
How to decide with a site-specific test
- Check the negotiated protocol. Confirm whether the browser and CDN use HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, or HTTP/3 for the actual asset requests. Do not infer the protocol from a provider’s general capabilities.
- Verify the CDN path and caching. Confirm that each proposed hostname is actually routed through the CDN, that TLS is valid, and that the assets are eligible for caching.
- Compare the same pages. Test the current shared hostname against the proposed sharded setup using representative pages, user locations, and network conditions. Keep other changes controlled.
- Record page-level outcomes and setup costs. Compare load outcomes alongside DNS and connection setup and cache behavior; a faster individual asset is not enough if the whole page does not improve.
- Keep the change only if it wins repeatedly. There is no source-established universal threshold for a worthwhile gain. Weigh repeatable results for your audience against the extra operational complexity.
Common problems and what to check
- The new hostname shows no caching benefit: Check whether its DNS record is proxied through the CDN rather than DNS-only, and confirm the asset is eligible for caching.
- The sharded version is slower: Compare DNS and connection setup across hostnames. On HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, the extra connections may outweigh any concurrency benefit.
- Some assets fail over HTTPS: Verify that the certificate and CDN configuration cover every asset hostname.
- The result changes between test runs: Compare cache behavior and use repeat tests under representative network and geographic conditions before attributing a change to sharding.
