You can run a pre-recorded YouTube Live channel from a Hetzner dedicated server by having an encoder on the server play and loop your media, then send the resulting live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The file itself is not uploaded as a live broadcast: the encoder reads it and continuously sends encoded video and audio to YouTube. Before relying on a particular server for 24/7 streaming, verify its current hardware, network capacity, traffic terms, and acceptable-use rules; those details depend on the exact Hetzner offer and are not established here.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and the minimum age to live stream is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
  • Video and audio files you have the rights to broadcast as a live stream, including any necessary music rights.
  • A server with an operating system and sufficient sustained outbound capacity for the encoder and stream settings you choose.
  • An encoder that can read and loop or schedule your files, send to YouTube using a supported ingest protocol, and be operated unattended on your server.

YouTube’s encoder guide explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming, and lists software encoders including OBS: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. This is a software workflow; a dedicated server does not by itself make a particular encoder or hardware configuration suitable.

Step 1: Check the Hetzner server before committing

Check the current terms and technical details for the exact server and location you intend to rent. Confirm sustained outbound capacity, any traffic limits or charges, hardware encoding support if you intend to use it, and whether your planned continuous streaming complies with the applicable terms. Do not assume that a home speed test, advertised port speed, or a different Hetzner product describes the server’s usable 24/7 outbound capacity.

Estimate the stream’s total encoded bitrate and leave roughly 20% upload headroom. YouTube recommends this margin and advises monitoring stream quality; interruptions can break a live stream. The relevant capacity is the server’s sustained outbound path to YouTube, not the connection at your home. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Step 2: Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open the Live Control Room. Create a scheduled stream or configure the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. These tell the encoder where to send the feed and authorize it to ingest the stream.
  3. Keep the key private as you would a password. Enter it only in your encoder’s YouTube connection settings; if it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

For current account requirements and activation timing, use YouTube’s live-streaming help page. The encoder workflow and stream-key role are described in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Step 3: Configure an encoder to play and loop your media

Install an encoder that runs on the chosen server’s operating system and can play your files on the schedule you need. OBS is one option identified by YouTube, but choose based on the features you require: unattended operation, looping or scheduling, reliable audio/video synchronization, RTMPS output, and a way to restart or fail over after a fault. No specific server, application build, or configuration is established as tested for this workflow.

  1. Set the media source or playlist so it plays in the required order and repeats when it reaches the end. Check whether the encoder stops, transitions, or waits between files; make the behavior match your intended continuous schedule.
  2. Select YouTube or RTMPS output if available. Otherwise enter the RTMPS ingest URL supplied in YouTube Live Control Room.
  3. Paste the event’s stream key into the encoder’s key field. Avoid embedding it in a publicly readable script, command, or log.
  4. Choose a supported video codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format. Save the profile and verify that the encoder is configured to start the correct playlist and reconnect or restart as your setup requires.

For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube’s published guidance calls for H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Recommended bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate, so use the current YouTube encoder settings table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for viewers.

RTMPS or HLS?

Option Best fit Trade-off
RTMPS Standard workflows with an encoder that supports YouTube’s recommended encrypted RTMP variant. Use the event’s supplied URL and current recommended settings; confirm your encoder supports the protocol.
HLS Specific workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. Higher latency and stricter segment and rolling-playlist requirements make it less straightforward for a simple prerecorded loop.

YouTube documents the standard RTMP settings and protocol guidance in its encoder settings and encoder setup pages. Its HLS ingestion guidance describes HLS-specific requirements.

Step 4: Test the full stream and monitor it

  1. Run a test using the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, media motion, and audio you expect in production.
  2. Check the preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room, then verify the public or scheduled watch page plays correctly.
  3. Listen for missing or distorted audio, check for picture freezes or sync drift, and verify that the encoder moves to the next file and loops as intended.
  4. Monitor sustained outbound use from the server and keep an eye on YouTube stream health. If using a backup feed, test the encoder’s failover behavior rather than assuming it works.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend bandwidth headroom and ongoing quality checks. A test establishes whether your own configuration works under those conditions; it does not prove future server availability or uninterrupted service.

Rights and monetization are separate from uptime

YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights, and to follow Community Guidelines and applicable law. A license for an ordinary on-demand upload may not cover continuous live rebroadcast, so confirm that its scope explicitly permits this use. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

A successful technical stream does not guarantee monetization. YouTube evaluates monetization at the channel level and applies its policies to live streams, including rules on reused content and repetitive or mass-produced material. Its July 15, 2025 update clarified the “inauthentic content” label for repetitive or mass-produced content and did not change the reused-content policy. Originality, variation, and added value matter; neither all prerecorded livestreams nor all continuous loops are categorically eligible or ineligible. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a feed Wrong or stale stream key, incorrect ingest URL, unsupported output protocol, or the encoder is not running. Confirm the event’s current URL and key in Live Control Room, verify RTMPS selection and encoder output status, and restart the encoder after correcting credentials.
Stream health reports instability Insufficient sustained outbound capacity, bitrate spikes, or a network interruption. Measure server-side outbound use during the actual workload, reduce bitrate using YouTube’s current settings table if needed, and retain the recommended 20% headroom.
Video appears but audio is missing or poor Incorrect audio source, format, or encoder routing. Check that the playlist includes audio, the encoder selects it, and the output uses AAC or MP3 as supported by YouTube’s settings.
Playback stops at the end of a file or playlist Looping or schedule behavior is not enabled, or the encoder exits after the source ends. Review the source’s repeat behavior and unattended restart configuration; test a full playlist cycle before relying on it.
Keyframe or format warning Encoder output does not match YouTube’s current recommendations. Use H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and a bitrate appropriate to resolution and frame rate.
Stream plays but monetization is unavailable Technical delivery does not establish policy eligibility; reused or repetitive content may fail channel-level review. Review YouTube’s monetization policies and ensure the channel’s content adds sufficient original value and has the necessary rights.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live without maintaining an encoder on a rented server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
