To get the thumbnail already associated with a hosted video, retrieve it through that platform’s API. To make a thumbnail from a particular moment, use a platform feature that creates a frame-based thumbnail or extract a frame from a video file. These are different tasks: there is no verified URL recipe that works across every video site.
First decide which thumbnail you need
- The platform thumbnail: The image the hosting service associates with a video. Retrieve its image URL and any available size metadata from the service’s API.
- A frame you choose: A still image made from a moment in the video. Vimeo documents an API method for creating one from a timestamp. For a local video file, you need a frame-extraction workflow; an exact command is not included here because a primary reference for the command syntax has not been verified.
- A custom image: An image you supply as the video’s thumbnail. Whether you can set one, and how, depends on the platform and account.
The instructions below cover documented YouTube and Vimeo workflows. For another video site, use its own official documentation rather than assuming the same API, URL pattern, or access rules apply.
Get a YouTube video’s existing thumbnail
For a developer workflow, request the video’s thumbnail resource through the YouTube Data API. Read the returned url for the image and, when present, its width and height. Google’s YouTube Data API documentation notes that available sizes can vary with the original image resolution or the content; do not assume every video has the same set of sizes or a particular image URL.
Choose an available size
- Retrieve the video’s thumbnail resource using the YouTube Data API.
- Inspect the returned thumbnail entries and their metadata.
- Select an image URL whose actual dimensions suit your display. If a size or dimension is absent, do not infer that a fixed-size version exists.
- Download the image or use the returned URL according to your application’s needs. If you need a long-lived asset, store the image rather than relying on an undocumented URL pattern.
Set a custom thumbnail for a video you own
This is separate from retrieving an existing thumbnail. YouTube’s thumbnails.set API method uploads a custom image. The official method page lists a maximum file size of 50 MB and JPEG and PNG among the accepted media types. Check the current API instructions and your account’s eligibility before using it; those details can depend on the account and the current platform requirements.

Get or create a Vimeo thumbnail
Vimeo’s API supports retrieving the thumbnail images associated with a video and choosing among the returned links by size. Its documented thumbnail workflow is authenticated: it requires an API application and an access token with the necessary scope. Vimeo’s API page labels its examples version 3.4, so confirm the requirements for the API version you use.
Retrieve an existing image
- Use the Vimeo API to request the video’s thumbnail connection.
- Inspect the returned images and select the link and dimensions that fit your use.
- For a requested size, Vimeo documents a
sizesparameter formatted as width by height in pixels. - Download the image or refresh its URL as needed. Vimeo says thumbnail links returned by its API are valid for one hour; its documentation recommends downloading the image or refreshing the link rather than relying on a hard-coded or persistently cached URL.
Create a thumbnail from a video frame or upload one
Vimeo documents creating a thumbnail by specifying a time in seconds, which selects a frame from the hosted video. A video owner can alternatively upload a JPEG or PNG image. Both approaches are subject to the API application, authentication, and scope requirements described in Vimeo’s documentation. The time-based method is specific to Vimeo’s hosted-video API; it is not a general command for extracting a frame from a local video file.

What about other video sites or a video file on your device?
Other hosted platforms
There is no universal thumbnail endpoint established for all video services. Look for the platform’s own API or creator tools and verify whether they expose an existing thumbnail, let you set one, or can generate one from a timestamp. Also check authentication, image formats, dimensions, and whether returned image links expire.
Local video files
For a local file, the task is to select a frame and save it as an image. The exact command or application depends on the software you choose; Vimeo’s timestamp API should not be treated as a local-file extraction method. Use the current documentation for your chosen video tool before relying on a particular timestamp syntax, codec, or batch process.

Troubleshooting
- You cannot find an expected YouTube image size: Sizes vary by video. Inspect the actual thumbnail entries and dimensions returned by the API instead of constructing a URL from a guessed pattern.
- A Vimeo thumbnail link stops working: Vimeo documents a one-hour validity period. Download the image for longer-term use or refresh the URL through the API.
- A Vimeo API request cannot access thumbnails: Check that the API application and access token are configured with the necessary scope, and verify requirements for the API version in use.
- You need a frame from a particular moment: On Vimeo, use its timestamp-based creation method. For another host or a local file, consult that platform’s or tool’s documentation; do not assume Vimeo’s API behavior carries over.
- You want to change a video’s thumbnail but only have a retrieval workflow: Retrieval and setting a custom image are separate operations. Check the platform’s custom-thumbnail API or creator interface and confirm current account eligibility.
