You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream from a Hetzner Cloud Linux server by configuring an encoder to combine an audio source with a still image and send the resulting live video to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube and Hetzner provide the building blocks, but you must configure and monitor the server and encoder yourself; neither provider’s published guidance guarantees a single live event can run indefinitely.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. Check current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- A Linux Hetzner Cloud server with a public IP and outbound connectivity to YouTube.
- An audio source you have the right to stream, a static artwork image, and an encoder configured to combine them.
- A YouTube Live Control Room server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
This setup produces a live video stream whose picture is static while audio plays. It is not a camera broadcast. Confirm that your music, recordings, artwork, and any associated rights meet applicable copyright requirements; permission to stream is not automatic.
1. Configure YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. If prompted, complete channel verification or activation and allow for any eligibility delay shown by YouTube.
- Create or configure the live stream and choose an encoder-based workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream.
- Keep the stream private or unlisted while configuring and testing. Do not publish the key in a script, screenshot, support post, or public repository. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming and recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Use the exact endpoint and key displayed in Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed ingest URL; consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the current workflow.
2. Create and secure the Hetzner server
Choose an image, plan, and location
In the Hetzner Cloud Console, create a server, select a Linux image, choose a server plan, and select a location. Hetzner documents locations in Europe, the US, and Singapore; availability can change. Its guidance suggests choosing a nearby location for smaller projects. Select resources for the encoder workload you intend to run: no source here establishes a minimum vCPU or RAM size for this specific radio setup, so do not treat an unmeasured plan as guaranteed to be sufficient. Hetzner says server resources can be rescaled.

Assign a Primary IP so the VM has public network connectivity. Configure SSH access using a key where possible, and restrict administration to the addresses and ports you actually need.
Set the firewall deliberately
Hetzner Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic that does not match an allowed rule. If you configure no outbound rules, outbound traffic is permitted. For this encoder design, allow only required administrative inbound access and permit the outbound connection needed to reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Confirm the actual network path against current Hetzner firewall behavior and the encoder you choose; do not open extra inbound ports without a reason. See Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall documentation.

3. Combine the artwork and audio in an encoder
The encoder must keep a video track alive from the still image, read or loop the audio source, encode or mux both tracks, and continuously send the result to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. Configure the encoder to publish over RTMPS when supported by the endpoint and software. The precise FFmpeg command, service-manager configuration, playlist rotation, reconnect flags, and restart behavior depend on your media files and current software versions; they are not specified by YouTube or Hetzner’s setup instructions here. Validate the command and the process supervisor against current FFmpeg documentation before relying on them for a continuous broadcast.
Use YouTube’s published encoder targets
YouTube’s RTMP(S) guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video support, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so select a profile from the current table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. A static image may need less visual data than fast-moving video, but YouTube does not publish a special low-motion radio preset.

YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream. Check the latest recommendations in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose a practical output profile
- Pick a resolution and frame rate that suit a static-artwork broadcast and the audience experience you want; do not select a higher output solely because the image is still.
- Choose the corresponding bitrate range from YouTube’s current table and check that the server’s available outbound capacity can sustain it.
- Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a supported audio codec and sample configuration for your encoder. These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a radio-specific guarantee.
- Keep the artwork at the intended display aspect ratio and test for cropping, scaling, or unexpected black borders in the Live Control Room preview.
4. Test the stream before relying on it
- Start the encoder while the YouTube event is private or unlisted, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information.
- Confirm the artwork is visible, audio is audible and not distorted, and the event is available to the intended audience.
- Check the encoder and server logs for repeated connection errors, restarts, or resource pressure. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room; YouTube’s API also exposes stream status and health information through its LiveStreams resource.
- Before treating the system as unattended, conduct a controlled interruption test and verify how your encoder and process supervisor behave when the connection drops or the process stops. This is an operational test you perform; provider documentation does not establish that a particular configuration will recover correctly.
YouTube’s documentation describes 24/7 channel feeds but does not promise that one live event can run indefinitely, establish current archive limits, or settle all restrictions that may apply to continuous loops. Confirm current Live Control Room behavior and applicable YouTube rules before promising a perpetual event.

5. Plan recovery separately from stream continuity
Hetzner offers daily backups and manually created snapshots. Its backup feature documents seven daily slots per server; manually created snapshots remain until you delete them. Attached volumes are excluded, so media or configuration stored on a volume needs a separate backup. A backup or snapshot can help restore disk contents after a problem, but it does not keep a broadcast online during a server outage or provide stream failover. Review Hetzner’s backup and snapshot documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Estimate ongoing cost and bandwidth
Check Hetzner’s live pricing display for the selected server, location, public IPv4 needs, traffic allowance or charges, and backup or snapshot costs. Prices and allowances can change, so an old quoted amount may not describe your current configuration. Hetzner states that server resources are billed while the server exists even if it is powered off, and that its Cloud billing model charges for outgoing traffic. Its location documentation says cross-zone traffic is billed like other internet traffic. See Hetzner Cloud and its billing overview.

For stream capacity, compare the chosen output bitrate with the available upstream network capacity and test under the conditions you expect. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate; a higher-bitrate profile uses more outbound data over time.

If you would rather not configure and maintain a Hetzner VM and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
