A use case describes useful behavior a system offers to an actor; a test case specifies how to check a particular behavior, including its setup, inputs, steps, and expected results. A use case helps clarify what the system should do from the outside. A test case turns a selected expectation into something a tester can execute and evaluate.

Use case vs. test case at a glance

Dimension Use case Test case
Main purpose Describe useful behavior offered by a system Check whether behavior or a requirement produces an expected result
Point of view Interaction across the system boundary A verification objective and the conditions under which it is executed
Typical contents Actors or stakeholders, system behavior, a main path, and relevant variants Setup, input data, steps, expected results, evaluation criteria, and traceability
How teams use it Clarifies behavior and can inform requirements Supports execution, evaluation, repeatability, and regression checks

What is a use case?

A use case describes actions performed by a system that produce an observable result of value to an actor or another stakeholder. The OMG’s UML specification defines it as “the specification of a set of actions performed by a system, which yields an observable result that is, typically, of value for one or more actors or other stakeholders of the system” (OMG Unified Modeling Language specification, ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012, §16.3.6).

It focuses on behavior visible across the system boundary, not the internal code or architecture. A use case can describe a main interaction as well as meaningful alternatives, exceptional behavior, and error handling.

Example: placing an order

An online-store use case might describe a shopper submitting an order and receiving confirmation. It could also include variations such as a declined payment or an unavailable item. Those paths clarify how the system is expected to behave without prescribing how developers implement it.

What is a test case?

A test case describes a check of a feature or requirement: what to prepare, what input or action to provide, and what response should occur. NASA’s Software Safety Guidebook defines a test case as “a document that describes an input, action, or event and an expected response, to determine if a feature of an application is working correctly.”

For a test to be assessable, its expected result must be clear enough to compare with what actually happens. NASA guidance identifies details such as an identifier and name, objective, setup, input-data requirements, steps, and expected results. Its Software Engineering Handbook also recommends recording the requirements addressed, prerequisites, assumptions or constraints, evaluation criteria, and test configuration (NASA Software Engineering Handbook: Software Test Procedures; Version B page updated November 15, 2019).

Example: checking the order flow

A test case for the order use case might specify a prepared account and cart, a particular payment input, the steps to submit the order, and the expected confirmation. A separate test case could use a declined-payment input and expect an error message rather than an order confirmation. These are illustrative examples, not reported tests of a particular store.

How use cases and test cases work together

Use cases help teams agree on meaningful externally visible behavior. Test cases check selected outcomes under defined conditions. Requirements traceability can connect those artifacts: a test can identify the requirement or behavior it verifies, and teams can use that link to assess coverage and repeat checks during regression testing.

There is no universal one-use-case-to-one-test-case mapping. A use case may involve multiple paths and conditions, so teams may write several test cases for it. A test case may also verify a requirement expressed elsewhere rather than map neatly to a single use case. The appropriate links depend on the system’s requirements and the coverage the team needs.

How to decide which one to write

  • Write a use case when you need to explain who interacts with the system, what useful outcome they seek, and which alternate or exceptional paths matter.
  • Write a test case when you need a repeatable check with defined prerequisites, inputs, actions, expected results, and evaluation criteria.
  • Link them through requirements when you need to show which tests verify which expected behaviors and support coverage or regression work.

Use case, test case, and test scenario

“Test scenario” is sometimes used loosely in discussions of QA, which can make it sound interchangeable with “use case” or “test case.” Keep the distinction practical: a use case describes system behavior for an actor; a test case spells out a check and its expected result. Teams may use “scenario” for a high-level situation to test, but terminology varies, so define it in project documentation rather than relying on the label alone.
