To stream multiple pre-recorded videos in sequence from a Hetzner server to YouTube Live, run a playlist or playback process on the server and feed its continuous output to an encoder. The encoder sends that feed to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS, protect the key, and test the actual files and transitions before relying on a long broadcast.
How the setup works
The sequence is created on your server; YouTube receives one continuous live encoder feed. The playback layer reads the selected files in order and supplies video and audio to an encoder. That encoder connects outbound to YouTube Live using the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube explains its encoder setup at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Prepare the video files and decide their playback order.
- Configure a server-side playback or playlist process to advance through them as one continuous output.
- Configure an encoder to send that output to the YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Preview and monitor the stream in Live Control Room, then end the encoder feed and the event when finished.
The exact playback and encoder configuration depends on the files and software you choose. There is no universal command that can be assumed to work for every collection of videos.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into your encoder configuration. Use the URL displayed in Live Control Room rather than guessing an ingest endpoint.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport with TLS. See Stream using an encoder for the RTMPS URL details. If the encoder reports an SSL issue, confirm that the URL begins with rtmps, not rtmp; YouTube notes that specifying port 443 can resolve some SSL errors.

Set encoder output to suit the source
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source, encoder, or network will perform well. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, match output to the source and encoder, and check Live Control Room’s stream health.
Build and test the video sequence
Check the media before choosing a workflow
File codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, containers, and timestamps can affect whether files play consecutively without interruptions. Decide whether simple cuts are acceptable or whether you need transitions, and verify that the playback process can keep a single continuous output while moving from one file to the next. If inputs differ, you may need to normalize or re-encode them; do not assume a playlist command will handle every mismatch correctly.

Test representative files and transitions
- Run a short test with representative files, including any files with different formats or frame rates.
- Watch the handoff between each video for freezes, gaps, unexpected black frames, or audio dropouts.
- Open the preview in Live Control Room and check picture, sound, and stream health before relying on the setup for a scheduled or extended broadcast.
- Confirm that the event is accessible through its YouTube watch page.
YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Its guidance is available at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Keep the Hetzner server connected and account for traffic
The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, so this workflow does not inherently require opening a public inbound streaming port. Hetzner Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic when no rules are configured and permit outbound traffic by default. If you add custom outbound rules, allow the server to connect to the selected ingest endpoint. Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls have no charge; see Hetzner Cloud Firewalls.

Included monthly traffic depends on the Cloud server type and location. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB for CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations; allowances vary for US and Singapore locations and by plan. That documentation was last changed on 2024-05-21, so check the current pricing view for the specific server and location before estimating costs: Hetzner traffic billing information.
Estimate outbound transfer using the encoder’s actual bitrate and planned streaming hours. Do not count viewers’ YouTube playback traffic as traffic served by your Hetzner host: the server sends its encoder feed to YouTube.

Monitor and end the broadcast
During the broadcast, check Live Control Room’s stream health and audio/video preview. If the encoder stops sending, investigate the server playback process, encoder process, and outbound connection before restarting the event. When finished, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for the configuration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Encoder cannot connect: Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and check that the key is current. If there is an SSL error, use the RTMPS URL rather than RTMP; YouTube says port 443 can resolve some SSL errors. Check custom Hetzner outbound firewall rules for permission to reach the ingest endpoint.
- Video or audio breaks at a file change: Check the two files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio tracks, containers, and timestamps. Test the handoff directly; adjust the playback workflow or normalize incompatible media as needed.
- Stream health is poor: Check the encoder’s selected codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations and the source’s properties. Monitor Live Control Room rather than assuming a recommended bitrate fits every network.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder configuration, and remove the exposed copy from any public repository or logs where possible.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream its contents. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other included material, including any applicable rights for live use. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content, and use the copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream prompt. Policy eligibility and monetization are separate questions; do not assume that a technically successful stream is automatically eligible for monetization.
