If your YouTube live stream keeps disconnecting from FFmpeg on Vultr Cloud Compute, first identify which layer is failing: FFmpeg or its input, YouTube’s ingest configuration, or the VM’s outbound network path. Check the exact errors and timestamps in both FFmpeg and YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings. The available evidence does not establish a single Vultr-specific cause; confirming one requires your instance region and plan, logs, and time-correlated network measurements.
1. Find out where the disconnect starts
Record the disconnect time and the exact error text shown in FFmpeg and YouTube Live Control Room. Then check whether FFmpeg exited, whether its input is still delivering frames, and whether any local recording or archive is still growing. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, inspecting the local archive, and testing the outbound connection (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; YouTube live streaming tips).
- FFmpeg exited, input stalled, or archive stopped growing: investigate the FFmpeg process, input source, and host resources first.
- Local output continues but YouTube reports an ingest problem: inspect the active stream key, server URL, codec, bitrate, and the specific Live Control Room health message.
- FFmpeg and local output look healthy, but delivery fails: test the VM’s outbound path and its stability. This is a diagnostic inference, not evidence of a particular Vultr fault.
YouTube’s health messages can identify format, codec, bitrate, or other configuration problems. Follow the message shown for your stream; a local encoder that appears healthy does not establish that YouTube is receiving data correctly (troubleshooting guidance; Live streaming error messages).
2. Verify the YouTube stream key, URL, and encoder settings
- In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the active stream key and server URL for the stream. Update FFmpeg if the key is stale or incorrect. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or examples. YouTube specifically advises obtaining the current key and updating the encoder when needed (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Check the FFmpeg output protocol and destination against the URL provided by YouTube. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest. Prefer RTMPS where available and use the endpoint shown in Live Control Room (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
- Confirm that your video and audio formats and rate match YouTube’s guidance and the stream’s Live Control Room requirements. YouTube’s encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Match resolution and bitrate to the outbound capacity you can actually sustain. YouTube’s H.264 settings list these minimum and recommended bitrates:
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Vultr instance or route can sustain a bitrate. If the outbound path cannot support the chosen setting, reduce resolution or bitrate to a supported level and test again (YouTube encoder settings; live error messages).

3. Check whether outbound bandwidth is sufficient and stable
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance states: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Include audio and any other feeds in the total (Streaming tips).
- Measure outbound bandwidth from the instance, ideally while the stream is active. Do not substitute an advertised server speed or an inbound-speed figure for a measurement of the outbound path.
- A speed test taken while idle may not reflect contention or intermittent loss during a broadcast. Treat that as a practical diagnostic possibility, not a YouTube rule.
- If capacity is insufficient, lower the resolution or bitrate, then repeat a test using representative audio and motion. If average capacity appears adequate but drops continue, collect time-correlated outbound measurements and FFmpeg logs.
The available information does not establish a Vultr-specific egress limit, route problem, or regional incident. To investigate a possible provider-side issue, include the instance region and plan, disconnect timestamps, relevant logs, YouTube health messages, and network measurements rather than inferring a cause from the provider name alone.
4. Understand which FFmpeg reconnect options apply
FFmpeg’s reconnect options are protocol-specific. Options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed are documented for HTTP input. They can help with eligible failures while FFmpeg reads a remote HTTP source, but they are not a universal switch for reconnecting an RTMP output to YouTube (FFmpeg documentation, FIFO muxer).

For output recovery, FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that attempts recovery after temporary failures. Its example is:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is FFmpeg’s documented pattern, not a tested command for your source, installed build, or YouTube stream key. Replace the input and destination carefully; use the URL and key supplied by YouTube, and keep the key private. Verify that your FFmpeg build supports the options, then test in a controlled session.
FIFO recovery can attempt to resume output after temporary network failure, but it does not guarantee a successful reconnect or preserve every frame. Dropping packets on overflow can affect continuity; buffering and recovery can also affect latency. Observe the actual result rather than treating the example as a guaranteed fix.

| Recovery approach | Failure layer | What it may do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP reconnect options | FFmpeg HTTP input | Retry eligible HTTP input failures or end-of-file conditions, depending on the option and build | Does not establish RTMP output reconnection behavior. |
| FIFO muxer recovery | FFmpeg output path | Attempt output recovery after temporary failure, with a configured wait | Must be validated with the actual build and destination; buffering and packet dropping affect behavior. |
They address different failure layers and are not plug-compatible fixes. Compare their protocol applicability, buffering and latency, packet-loss behavior, and recovery in a controlled test (FFmpeg documentation).
5. Check RTMPS protocol and port errors
If FFmpeg reports an SSL error or connection timeout, verify that the endpoint uses the rtmps protocol and the server address provided by YouTube. YouTube says to try port 443 in the URL or encoder setting where appropriate (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS). This can address endpoint or protocol setup; it will not fix a stalled input, insufficient bandwidth, or an instance or network outage.
6. Test before the next broadcast and monitor both ends
Run a test using representative audio and motion before an important stream. During the test, watch YouTube’s health indicators alongside FFmpeg’s output, CPU load, and the local archive’s growth. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and checking the local archive, which can reveal a sender-side stall even when a dashboard symptom is ambiguous (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube live streaming tips).

7. Common disconnect symptoms and next steps
- YouTube reports a codec, format, or bitrate error: match the encoder settings to the error shown in Live Control Room; verify codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
- FFmpeg cannot publish after a key change: obtain the currently active stream key and server URL in Live Control Room, update the sender, and keep the key out of shared logs.
- FFmpeg reports an SSL error or timeout: check that the YouTube endpoint is RTMPS; where applicable, try port 443.
- Input or archive stops before YouTube loses the stream: inspect the source and FFmpeg process rather than assuming an ingest or provider fault.
- Disconnects persist despite valid settings and sufficient measured capacity: preserve timestamps, logs, dashboard messages, region and plan, and time-correlated network data for further diagnosis.
