Switching from x264 to Intel Quick Sync does not, by itself, identify why your YouTube stream is losing frames. In OBS, first check which counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or bitrate, while rendering lag and encoding lag point to OBS performance. The fix depends on that distinction.
Identify which OBS counter is increasing
Open OBS’s View > Stats panel while reproducing the problem. Note whether Dropped Frames (Network), Skipped Frames Due to Rendering Lag, or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag is climbing. Save the OBS log from the same run. “Frames dropping” is an everyday description, not a diagnosis: these counters track different failure paths.
- Network-dropped frames: OBS says this indicates an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. It does not, on its own, mean Quick Sync is overloaded. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains this counter.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot composite and render frames in time. GPU load, scene complexity, frame rate, and output resolution can contribute.
- Encoding lag: frames are not being encoded in time. Check the OBS log and system load rather than assuming the network is at fault.
The encoder switch may be related if the issue consistently appears under the same conditions, but timing alone does not prove Quick Sync caused it. OBS describes network drops as very unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; that general guidance is not a diagnosis of this specific setup.
If the network-dropped counter rises
Check whether the connection can reliably sustain the stream’s configured bitrate. Compare the target with stable upload capacity—not a brief peak speed test—and reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot carry it consistently. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; treat that as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee. Choose another ingest server if one is available.

Check the connection path
- If streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. If a cable is suspect, test with a known-good Ethernet cable before replacing hardware.
- Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, bundled network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, and suspect network hardware. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what matters.
- If you are unsure whether the network hardware or service is at fault, OBS advises discussing the issue with your ISP before replacing equipment.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during congestion, which may reduce network drops, but it does not repair the underlying connection problem and can lower video quality. The OBS connection guide also documents Windows-only network optimizations, including TCP pacing. It suggests returning the IP family to its default if switching to IPv4 does not help; do not treat that as a universal fix.
If rendering or encoding lag rises
Reproduce the issue during the most demanding scene or game, then inspect OBS Statistics and the log. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render even when a hardware encoder handles video encoding. A GPU saturated by an uncapped game or other GPU work may leave too little headroom for OBS.

Reduce competing load methodically
- Cap the game’s frame rate or lower its graphics settings, then repeat the same stream test.
- If the relevant lag persists, test a lower OBS output resolution or change output from 60 fps to 30 fps. Make only one change per test.
- Simplify complex scenes and test without resource-intensive sources or filters.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS says this can help resolve GPU overload in some cases.
These are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed fixes. Keep the scene, bitrate, test duration, and other settings consistent enough to see whether the counter responds to each change. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, discusses GPU capacity, scene load, frame rate, and resolution.
Check Quick Sync compatibility and compare it fairly with x264
Quick Sync shifts encoding work to Intel’s hardware video-encoding component, which can reduce CPU work. That does not guarantee better overall OBS performance: the full pipeline still needs enough CPU and GPU capacity, and image quality can vary by hardware generation and bitrate.

OBS lists Intel QSV support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i CPUs from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer. It recommends Core-i 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV versions produced lower image quality. Check that the system’s drivers are current and that OBS is using the intended hardware encoder. If the system also has NVIDIA or AMD graphics, OBS advises using the primary graphics adapter’s hardware encoder—for example, NVENC or AMF—where appropriate. To isolate the encoder, preserve or duplicate the OBS profile, then test x264 and Quick Sync with the same representative scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and duration. Change only the encoder setting, record the counters, and keep both logs. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. There is no universal winner: the result depends on your hardware and workload.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to your stream
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select the bitrate guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you send; then confirm that your stable upload capacity can sustain it.
For one concrete reference, Google / YouTube Help lists 17 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p60. This is YouTube’s recommended bitrate entry on the page accessed October 3, 2026—not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee that your network can sustain the stream. Do not apply that figure automatically to another codec, resolution, or frame rate.

YouTube’s page says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Its inspected page showed no publication date.
Troubleshooting: symptom, likely path, and next check

A precise diagnosis needs the OBS log and Statistics, operating system and OBS version, Intel CPU/iGPU and driver, encoder settings, output resolution, frame rate and bitrate, connection type and stable upload capacity, and the exact counter that increases. Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether this case is a network, rendering, encoding, compatibility, or interaction issue.
