Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf OBS started showing “Encoding overloaded” after a Windows graphics-driver update, the update is a reasonable suspect—but the timing alone does not prove it caused the problem. First check OBS’s session statistics and save a log, then reduce system load and test one change at a time. The warning points to OBS not finishing encoding work on time; network-related dropped frames are a different problem.
What “Encoding overloaded” means—and what to check first
OBS can show encoding lag when it cannot complete the work of preparing frames quickly enough. GPU contention can contribute even when you use the CPU-based x264 encoder, because OBS also uses the GPU to render and composite scenes. The warning does not, by itself, identify the graphics driver as the cause. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide describes GPU overload and resource constraints as common contributors.
Save the problem session before changing settings
If possible, reproduce the issue once and save an OBS log for that session. Record the OBS version, Windows version and build, GPU model, graphics-driver version and date, selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether the driver update came through Windows Update or the GPU maker. These details help distinguish a driver regression from a workload or configuration problem; without them, the exact failing driver cannot be identified.
Tell encoding lag apart from network drops
Open View → Stats in OBS while streaming. Check Skipped frames due to encoding lag and Frames missed due to rendering lag. If the issue is instead Dropped Frames (Network), use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance. OBS identifies network dropped frames with an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. A driver rollback or a more powerful GPU is not the first fix for a connection fault.

Reduce GPU contention with reversible changes
Start with the changes that reduce competition for GPU time without substantially changing the stream setup. Apply one at a time, then check OBS Stats again so you can tell which change matters.
- Run OBS as administrator. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test the stream again. OBS recommends this on Windows as a way to help it obtain the resources it needs.
- Close known GPU-heavy programs. Exit applications you recognize as using substantial GPU resources, such as another game or GPU-intensive creative software. Avoid ending unfamiliar background processes just to reduce load.
- Limit the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync. Set the game’s frame limit no higher than the monitor refresh rate, or enable V-Sync. If the game is using all available GPU capacity to render extra frames, OBS may have too little time to render its scene.
- Reduce game graphics settings. Lower demanding in-game options and check whether OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics improve.
These are among the GPU-overload checks in OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide. If they do not resolve the warning, reduce the OBS workload next.

Reduce OBS workload if the warning continues
Simplify scenes and sources
Temporarily test a simpler scene. Remove or disable nonessential browser sources, filters, and other complex elements one at a time. This helps determine whether a particular scene is adding enough render work to trigger lag. Keep a note of each change so you can restore elements that do not affect the result.
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In Settings → Video, test a lower output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot sustain the current workload. For example, try 30 FPS if 60 FPS is unstable. Change one setting at a time and assess the result in OBS Stats as well as the stream’s visual quality. Reducing the base (canvas) resolution is a more disruptive option; try less disruptive workload reductions first. OBS’s guide also recommends lowering resolution or frame rate when system resources are insufficient.

Test whether the graphics-driver update is responsible
If the warning began immediately after a Windows driver update, rolling back the affected display adapter is a reasonable diagnostic test. It is not proof of causation: compare behavior before and after the change under a similar OBS workload.
- Open Device Manager in Windows.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the affected adapter, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Follow the prompts and restart if Windows asks you to. Test OBS again and compare its statistics with the saved baseline.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Rollback requires administrator access and may be unavailable if Windows has no earlier driver to restore. If the option is unavailable, get a compatible driver through the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support channel; choose the package for your specific adapter and system.

Check HAGS and GPU assignment where relevant
Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
OBS says Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) may cause performance problems or hardware-encoder failures on some systems. Treat turning it off as a test, not a universal fix. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings, switch off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if the setting is present, restart, and compare OBS’s statistics with your baseline. Windows labels and setting availability can vary by version and hardware. OBS’s HAGS guidance explains the troubleshooting recommendation.
Check which GPU OBS uses on a laptop or multi-GPU system
If the computer has integrated and discrete GPUs, check OBS’s assignment in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics. The suitable GPU can depend on how you capture: OBS’s GPU Selection Guide distinguishes game or window capture from display capture. Do not apply laptop-specific GPU-selection instructions to every desktop, and do not assume the discrete GPU is automatically the right choice for every capture method.

Review the encoder choice without assuming hardware encoding is always better
OBS supports hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync when compatible hardware and drivers are available. Hardware encoding generally moves encoding work away from the CPU, but whether it helps depends on the GPU, driver, encoder support, and workload. A hardware encoder still relies on the graphics system, so switching to one does not necessarily fix GPU contention after a driver update.
Compare the available encoder choices in Settings → Output and test one change at a time. Observe CPU load, OBS rendering and encoding statistics, and stream stability; choose the option that works reliably on your system rather than changing encoders on principle. OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide describes supported encoder families and considerations.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Encoding lag falls after closing a game or limiting its frame rate: GPU contention was likely involved. Keep the least disruptive change that stabilizes the stream.
- Only one scene triggers lag: Compare its browser sources, filters, and other complex elements with a simpler scene; restore or disable them individually to find the load contributor.
- Lower FPS or output resolution helps: The previous output workload was not stable on the system under those conditions. Select a sustainable setting that still meets your quality needs.
- Rollback is available and the warning clears under a comparable workload: That supports the driver as a possible factor, but does not prove it. Keep the stable configuration and use the manufacturer’s official support channel for compatible driver guidance.
- Rollback is unavailable: Windows may not have retained a previous driver. Check the GPU or computer maker’s official support channel for a compatible package.
- HAGS off changes the result only after restart: Repeat the comparison under similar conditions before treating the setting as relevant to your setup.
- OBS shows network dropped frames instead of encoding or rendering lag: Investigate the connection and whether it can sustain the selected bitrate using OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
- The warning persists after these tests: Review the saved OBS log alongside the system and encoder details recorded at the start. The warning alone cannot establish whether the remaining cause is the driver, system capacity, a particular scene, or another configuration issue.
