If Wirecast loses its internet connection, restore the connection and check whether Wirecast resumes its output. Telestream’s version history documents a fix for a Wirecast hang after internet loss: the software would reconnect automatically once the connection returned. That is version-specific behavior, not a guarantee that every version or YouTube event will resume. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings control event start and stop; they are not documented as network-reconnect switches.
Recover the stream in the right order
- Restore internet access. Confirm the Wirecast computer can reach the internet again before changing stream settings. If the connection is unstable or upload capacity is inadequate, Wirecast may continue dropping frames or fail to send the feed.
- Check Wirecast’s output. After the connection returns, inspect Wirecast to see whether its output has resumed. Telestream’s version history says Wirecast automatically reconnects after internet service is restored for the documented fix. Check your installed version against Telestream’s version history; the available entry does not identify its release heading, so do not assume a specific version contains it.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream’s status and health. Determine whether YouTube is receiving a healthy encoder feed and whether the event is live, awaiting a preview, or stopped.
- Start the event only if its state requires it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say scheduled streams may require you to wait for the preview and click Go live. Auto-start and Auto-stop determine whether the encoder can start or stop an event; they do not repair a dropped network connection.
- Escalate with useful details. If Wirecast remains disconnected despite working internet, check whether your version includes the documented reconnect behavior and contact Telestream support with the application’s support information. If Wirecast appears to be sending a healthy feed but viewers still have trouble, use YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance to inspect the encoder, computer, and outbound connection.
Tell a network drop from an event or encoder problem
A YouTube stream has separate pieces: Wirecast sends the feed using the stream key, while YouTube manages the event and its lifecycle. Identify which part is failing before restarting the event or changing credentials.
| What you see | What to check | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Internet went down, then returned | Confirm internet access and inspect Wirecast output. | Allow Wirecast to reconnect if the installed version supports the documented behavior; verify the feed in Live Control Room. |
| Encoder reports an error while starting | Check the stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. | Update Wirecast with the key shown there if needed. YouTube advises checking the key for encoder start errors. |
| Feed is arriving, but the event has not gone live | Check the event state and whether YouTube is showing a preview. | Follow the event workflow; scheduled streams may require clicking Go live. |
| Feed appears healthy but viewers report playback trouble | Check encoder output, CPU load, any local recording, and the outbound internet connection. | Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps; contact your internet provider or report the issue to YouTube if it persists. |
Check bandwidth and computer load before lowering quality
Telestream recommends testing upload capacity. If the stream’s data rate exceeds available upload capacity, reduce the data rate, frame rate, or frame size to fit the connection. High CPU usage can also contribute to dropped frames, stream termination, or exceptions. Check both network capacity and system load rather than treating every interruption as a stream-key problem.
Make one adjustment at a time and verify the result in Wirecast and YouTube’s stream health. The Telestream support guidance includes differing CPU thresholds in separate passages, so there is no single threshold to apply here.

When a backup encoder is part of the plan
Wirecast reconnecting after a connection returns is not the same as failover to another encoder. YouTube recommends testing failover only when a backup encoder is actually configured: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player switches to the backup. A backup setup should be tested before relying on it for a live event.
