Find where the offset first appears—at the source, in MediaLive’s output, or in YouTube playback—before changing configuration. AWS documentation does not identify Indian-language audio tracks as a cause of sync delay.
First locate where the delay begins
Use the same identifiable event—a spoken word paired with a visible action, for example—to compare the source, MediaLive output, and YouTube playback. Note whether audio leads or lags and estimate the offset at each point. This is a practical diagnostic approach, not an AWS-prescribed test procedure.
- Source: Check whether audio and video are already out of sync before they reach MediaLive. If they are, correct or retime the upstream source.
- MediaLive output: Compare a direct capture of the encoded output with the source. If the source is aligned but this output is not, inspect the channel and encode configuration; do not apply a guessed offset.
- YouTube playback: Compare playback with a direct capture of MediaLive’s output. If the output is aligned but YouTube playback is not, investigate the downstream ingest and playback path.
This comparison helps distinguish an upstream, encoding/configuration, or downstream issue. It does not establish a particular YouTube setting as the fix.
Check the audio selector and language track
MediaLive audio selectors choose audio sources, including separate language tracks. Verify that the selector feeding the output points to the intended track and that the expected language is actually being sent. AWS describes selecting audio sources and language tracks, but does not state that an Indian language causes sync delay. AWS: Audio selectors

- Record the selector and source track used by the output.
- Confirm that the chosen track is the intended one, rather than assuming the language label guarantees the correct audio source.
- Check whether audio and video arrive together as a multiplexed source or separately; that detail can matter when tracing where timing diverges.
Do not treat pipeline locking as an audio-delay control
MediaLive pipeline locking aligns its two redundant pipelines; it does not promise to correct the audio-to-video offset viewers hear. AWS describes source-timecode locking and video-alignment locking as methods for pipeline alignment, not as general program-sync controls. AWS: Pipeline locking
Source-timecode locking
This method depends on reliable embedded source timecodes. If those timecodes are absent or unreliable, do not assume this method will align the pipelines as intended.

Video-alignment locking
This method compares visual signatures and does not require embedded timecodes. It requires compatible inputs and the same video content on both pipelines. AWS lists HLS, RTMP_PULL, and file inputs as incompatible with video-aligned locking; for those inputs, MediaLive runs open loop. Where applicable, AWS identifies InputVideoAligned and PipelinesLocked as metrics for pipeline alignment state. They do not directly measure viewer-perceived audio/video sync. AWS: Pipeline locking
Understand timestamps and timecodes before changing timing settings

Timecodes are separate identifiers. Output timecode can be initialized from embedded timecode, UTC, or zero-based time. The optional output-timecode synchronization threshold concerns matching output timecode with input timecode and can create timecode discontinuities; AWS does not document it as a general audio-delay control. - Input type and whether audio and video arrive multiplexed or separately.
- The audio selector and the selected track or language.
- Output group and destination mode.
- Whether audio leads or lags, and the measured offset.
- Whether the offset is present at the source, MediaLive output, or only in YouTube playback.
- If investigating redundant pipeline alignment: input compatibility, whether both pipelines receive the same video, and the relevant pipeline-locking metrics.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
Changing a setting before identifying the affected stage
Why it fails: The offset could originate upstream or downstream of MediaLive. What to do: Compare the source, direct MediaLive output, and YouTube playback before making a change.
Blaming the language track without checking the selector
Why it fails: AWS documentation does not establish Indian-language audio as a cause. What to do: Confirm which source and language track the output selector actually uses.

Enabling pipeline locking to fix program sync
Why it fails: Pipeline locking concerns alignment between redundant pipelines, not a guaranteed correction to audio/video offset. What to do: Use its documented checks only when troubleshooting pipeline alignment, and diagnose program sync separately.
Using a timecode threshold as a general delay control
Why it fails: The threshold concerns input/output timecode matching and may create timecode discontinuities. What to do: Do not treat it as an audio-delay remedy without a channel-specific diagnosis.
