If OBS warns that the encoder is overloaded while you stream to YouTube with Apple VT H.264, first confirm that the encoder is supported by your Mac and software versions. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and check for other GPU-heavy apps. Separately verify YouTube’s ingest settings: its recommended bitrate and keyframe interval help YouTube receive the stream, but do not directly fix local OBS encoding or rendering overload.
1. Confirm your Mac, OBS version, and encoder
In OBS, open Settings → Output and check whether the selected encoder is Apple VT H.264 Hardware Encoder. Record your Mac’s processor type, macOS version, and OBS version as well; compatibility and behavior can differ across these combinations.
OBS’s hardware encoding guidance documents H.264 streaming with VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon. It says Intel Macs cannot stream with VideoToolbox because of its constant-bitrate limitation and should use x264 instead. If your Mac is Intel, select x264 for streaming rather than assuming an Apple VT setting will work as required.
There is a version nuance: the VideoToolbox implementation on OBS’s moving master branch uses Apple Silicon’s constant-bitrate property when macOS 13 or newer is available, and logs that it will use average bitrate on Intel or older macOS. This describes current implementation code, not a guarantee for every released OBS build. Check the installed version and OBS’s encoder log if behavior is unclear.

2. Lower OBS output demands one change at a time
Check scaled output resolution and frame rate
In Settings → Video, note the output (scaled) resolution and common FPS value. If the overload warning continues, test at a lower output resolution or change 60 fps to 30 fps. A lower output resolution can reduce encoder load; a lower frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance specifically suggests dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Change one setting at a time and test with motion similar to the real stream. A lower frame rate can make fast movement look less smooth, while a lower resolution reduces image detail. Compare the result on representative content before settling on a setting.

Leave the base canvas alone unless resources are severely constrained
OBS advises reducing the base canvas resolution only when resources are severely constrained. The canvas affects how sources are sized and positioned, so changing it can require rearranging the scene. Try output resolution and frame rate first.
3. Reduce scene and system workload
Encoding is not the only work OBS performs. Scene composition, rendering, and other apps can also use GPU resources. Open Activity Monitor and look for other GPU-intensive applications; close or pause nonessential ones for a controlled test.

Temporarily simplify the OBS scene and test again. The OBS troubleshooting guidance identifies filters, browser sources, and demanding sources as potential resource users; some sources can continue using resources even when hidden.
- Disable expensive filters temporarily.
- Reduce the number or resolution of sources where practical.
- Turn off complex browser overlays or animations for the test.
- Test a simpler scene, then re-enable sources one by one to identify a heavier part of the setup.
4. Check YouTube ingest settings separately
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are about the video it receives, not a direct cure for local OBS encoder overload. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate range for your chosen resolution and frame rate:

These are YouTube’s published recommended ranges, not performance measurements or guarantees for a particular Mac. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. Your connection must also sustain the selected bitrate; YouTube recommends running a speed test. A weak upload connection and local encoding or rendering overload are different problems, so diagnose them separately.

Before a real event, run a test stream with audio and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. If the warning persists, collect the details that distinguish an encoder issue from a rendering or connection issue:

- Mac model and chip, macOS version, and OBS version.
- Selected encoder and rate-control settings, output resolution, and frame rate.
- OBS log and Stats window readings, including rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames.
- Scene and source inventory, plus YouTube’s stream-health message.
Without those details, the warning alone does not identify one root cause or guarantee a particular fix.
