Use FFmpeg’s -progress output as a heartbeat, and treat a stale heartbeat as a possible process stall—not proof that YouTube has stopped receiving a healthy stream. A reliable watchdog also checks FFmpeg’s exit status and error output, while YouTube’s Live Control Room and a playback check cover ingest and viewer-facing quality.

What the watchdog can—and cannot—tell you

There are several distinct signals in a live stream. They answer different questions, so avoid reducing them to one “healthy” flag.

Signal What it tells you What it does not establish
FFmpeg -progress heartbeat FFmpeg is emitting complete progress updates. That YouTube accepted the stream or that viewers hear and see good audio and video.
Process exit status and stderr Whether FFmpeg terminated and what diagnostics it emitted. Whether the stream was healthy immediately before termination.
YouTube Live Control Room The status and ingest errors YouTube reports for the received stream. That the process on your host is still running or that every viewer’s playback is good.
Playback and audio/video inspection Whether the output is usable from a viewer’s perspective. Why a failure occurred inside FFmpeg or at ingest.

FFmpeg’s documented progress records are machine-readable key=value lines. Each update ends with a progress key whose value is continue or end. The update interval is controlled by -stats_period; the documented default is 0.5 seconds. These details are in the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

A watchdog should refresh its heartbeat only after it has read a complete update. If no complete update arrives within an operator-chosen timeout, it can alert or restart FFmpeg. FFmpeg does not prescribe a universally correct timeout or restart policy: choose one for your source, network, host load, and tolerance for interruption.

Configure FFmpeg to publish to YouTube

Get the ingest URL and key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents encoder setup in its RTMPS instructions. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; YouTube recommends it.

  2. Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public script, a repository, a command transcript, or watchdog logs. Supply it from a protected secret store or environment variable, and restrict access to the process environment and configuration.

  3. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies with output settings, so select the matching current table entry rather than assuming one bitrate applies to every stream.

Example FFmpeg command

This is a command pattern, not a complete media workflow: replace the input, encoding options, and ingest URL with values appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
  -progress pipe:1 -stats_period 1

The encoding values above are illustrative only; they are not a universal YouTube preset. Set the video bitrate and other output values for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. For a two-second GOP at 30 fps, 60 frames is the corresponding illustrative keyframe interval. If you change frame rate, recalculate it. Use the RTMPS URL and key supplied for your stream, and protect them from logs.

-progress pipe:1 sends machine-readable progress to standard output; -stats_period 1 requests updates every second in this example. The one-second interval is an operator choice, not an FFmpeg requirement. -nostdin prevents FFmpeg from waiting for interactive terminal input, which is useful for unattended operation.

Build the watchdog around complete progress updates

Recommended supervision flow

  1. Start FFmpeg as a child process with progress output on a dedicated channel and capture stderr separately. Do not parse the human-readable stderr status line as your stable heartbeat interface.

  2. Buffer stdout lines as key/value pairs. Only refresh the heartbeat when the terminating progress=continue or progress=end line arrives; a partial update is not a completed heartbeat.

    Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Track the child PID, last complete-update time, and process exit code. A dead process and a living process with a stale progress feed are different failure cases and should be logged distinctly.

  4. When progress is stale beyond your selected threshold, record the condition, alert if appropriate, and apply a bounded restart policy or backoff. Do not restart indefinitely at a fixed rapid interval.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
  5. Preserve timestamped stderr and supervisor events across restarts. A new FFmpeg process should not erase the diagnostic trail for the previous one.

  6. Treat progress=end or a normal exit as completion when that is expected for the input. Do not classify every end record as a failure.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Check YouTube’s stream status independently, then inspect a separate playback where possible. FFmpeg progress shows encoder activity, not successful YouTube ingestion or good viewer-facing quality.

Python supervisor example

The following Linux/Python example demonstrates the control flow for one FFmpeg run. It reads progress records from stdout, drains stderr in a separate thread, distinguishes stale progress from process exit, and does not restart automatically. It is intentionally not a complete production service: choose and test a timeout, add a bounded retry policy if required, and integrate signal handling and service supervision for your operating system.

import os
import subprocess
import threading
import time
from datetime import datetime, timezone

PROGRESS_TIMEOUT = 30 # Example only: choose for your source and operating conditions.
LOG_PATH = "/var/log/ffmpeg-watchdog.log"

def log(message):
    stamp = datetime.now(timezone.utc).isoformat()
    with open(LOG_PATH, "a", encoding="utf-8") as f:
        f.write(f"{stamp} {message}\n")

def drain_stderr(pipe):
    with open(LOG_PATH, "a", encoding="utf-8") as f:
        for line in iter(pipe.readline, ""):
            stamp = datetime.now(timezone.utc).isoformat()
            f.write(f"{stamp} ffmpeg-stderr {line}")
            f.flush()

# Supply these through a protected environment or secret manager.
# Keep the key out of logs and source control.
url = os.environ["YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"]
key = os.environ["YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"]

command = [

    # and a stale heartbeat even when stdout has no new line.

                    f"out_time={record.get('out_time', 'unknown')}")
                record.clear()
                if value == "end":
                    state = "completed"
                    break
    elif proc.poll() is not None:
        state = "exited"
        break

    if time.monotonic() - last_complete > PROGRESS_TIMEOUT:
        state = "stale-progress"
        log(f"STALE progress heartbeat pid={proc.pid}; stopping for supervisor review")
        proc.terminate()
        try:
            proc.wait(timeout=10)
        except subprocess.TimeoutExpired:
            proc.kill()
            proc.wait()
        break

return_code = proc.wait()
stderr_thread.join(timeout=2)
log(f"ffmpeg-finished state={state} exit_code={return_code}")

if state == "stale-progress":
    raise SystemExit("FFmpeg progress timed out; review logs and apply retry policy")
if return_code != 0:
    raise SystemExit(f"FFmpeg exited with status {return_code}")

This example’s PROGRESS_TIMEOUT is a placeholder policy value, not an FFmpeg or YouTube recommendation. Its blocking line read is suitable only when progress records continue to arrive often enough for the timeout check to run; a production supervisor should use a nonblocking selector or a dedicated reader thread and a queue so a blocked read cannot delay timeout detection. Also add signal handling, ensure child cleanup on supervisor termination, rotate or otherwise manage logs, and implement capped retries or backoff only after deciding which failures are retryable.

Verify YouTube ingest and the viewer experience

Open Live Control Room during the event and monitor the stream status and error messages. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of audio and video quality; its live stream metrics guidance describes the information available there, and its live streaming tips cover quality monitoring and backup-encoder testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A stream can have advancing FFmpeg progress while YouTube reports an ingest problem, or while the resulting audio/video is unsuitable. Conversely, a watchdog may be unable to read progress even when the host or network condition is transient. Use the dashboard and playback inspection alongside process telemetry when deciding whether to restart.

If you rely on a backup encoder, test the failover before an event. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. A test confirms your own setup’s behavior; it does not substitute for monitoring the actual event.

Troubleshoot common watchdog and stream failures

Symptom Likely layer What to check or do
No complete progress update before startup timeout Input, command, or FFmpeg startup Inspect timestamped stderr and the process exit code. Confirm the input is readable and the command’s output options and destination are valid before treating it as a live stall.
Process exited and progress stopped FFmpeg termination Record the exit status and review stderr. Decide whether the error is transient or requires operator correction before retrying.
Process is alive but complete updates are stale FFmpeg, input, host, or output blockage Check whether the progress reader itself is blocked, whether the source is irregular, and whether host load or network conditions explain the pause. Confirm timeout suitability before restarting.
Progress advances but Live Control Room reports errors YouTube ingest or stream configuration Use YouTube’s reported error and health details. Check the ingest URL/key and whether codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval match the current encoder guidance.
Dashboard indicates a stream but playback has missing or poor audio/video Output quality or viewer playback Inspect the source and encoded output, then check audio/video continuity and quality separately from process progress.
Repeated restarts without recovery Retry policy or persistent root cause Stop a rapid restart loop with a retry cap or backoff. Keep logs across runs and require an alert or operator review when the cap is reached.

How can I restart FFmpeg if the stream stalls?

Have a supervisor detect a stale complete-update heartbeat or process exit, preserve stderr and exit status, then apply a bounded retry or alert policy. The timeout and retry rules must be chosen for your operating conditions.
