First identify which connection is failing: an encoder pushing video into MediaLive, or MediaLive delivering its output to YouTube. An input security group controls which source IP ranges may push content into a MediaLive push input; it does not control MediaLive’s output connection to YouTube. If the failure is on the YouTube output leg, changing the input security group is the wrong fix.

Find the failing connection before changing settings

A MediaLive workflow can have two separate network legs. The upstream encoder or system sends content to a MediaLive input; MediaLive then processes and sends channel output to a destination such as YouTube. AWS describes input security groups as access restrictions for RTP and RTMP push inputs. Its YouTube delivery example is an output workflow using an HLS output group and a YouTube upload destination. AWS input security groups · AWS MediaLive workflow guidance

  • Encoder → MediaLive fails: investigate the input type, source address, and—if applicable—the input security group.
  • MediaLive → YouTube fails: investigate the channel output group, destination, and current YouTube ingest configuration. The input security group does not govern that output leg.

Do not infer the failing leg from a generic “streaming” or “security group” error alone. Confirm where the connection attempt stops and record the exact error.

Check the input and connection direction

MediaLive distinguishes push from pull inputs. With a push input, the upstream encoder connects to MediaLive. With a pull input, MediaLive connects to the source. The API distinguishes input types such as RTMP_PUSH and RTMP_PULL; an input security group is relevant to push ingress, not a general-purpose control for every input type. • Confirm the input type in the correct AWS account and Region.
  • Check whether the input is VPC-based. VPC inputs use VPC security group IDs; they are not compatible with the MediaLive inputSecurityGroups property.
  • For a non-VPC RTP or RTMP push input, identify the input security group attached to that input and inspect its IPv4 CIDR whitelist rules.

Allow the verified encoder source IP for a public push input

For a non-VPC RTP or RTMP push input, compare the encoder’s actual public source address with the IPv4 CIDR rules in the attached input security group. The address MediaLive sees may differ from the encoder’s local or private address because of NAT, a firewall, a VPN, or another network hop. Verify the public egress address used by the actual stream path rather than copying an address from the encoder’s local network settings. AWS documents the whitelist in IPv4 CIDR terms. MediaLive InputSecurityGroup API reference

  1. Confirm the AWS account, Region, MediaLive input, and security group involved in the failing connection.
  2. Determine the encoder’s public egress IP for the network path it is currently using. If the path can change, verify whether the egress IP is stable.
  3. Compare that address with the group’s configured IPv4 CIDR whitelist. Ensure the rule covers the verified source address.
  4. If the address is missing, add or adjust a narrowly scoped CIDR rule for the intended source, then retry the push connection and check its status.

Avoid using a broad allow-all range as a generic troubleshooting shortcut. The group’s purpose is to restrict which source ranges can push into the input. If you cannot establish the source IP, resolve that network question before widening access.

Apply changes in a safe input state

AWS allows endpoint fields to be edited for a non-VPC RTP input or RTMP push input, and an input can be assigned a different input security group. If the input is attached to a channel, edit it only while the channel is idle. AWS guidance on editing an input

  1. Check whether the input is attached to a channel and whether that channel is idle.
  2. If the channel is active, plan a safe idle window before editing the attached input or its security group assignment.
  3. Make only the necessary whitelist or assignment change, then test the encoder-to-input connection.

If MediaLive cannot deliver the output to YouTube

When the encoder reaches MediaLive but YouTube does not receive the stream, troubleshoot the output configuration independently. AWS’s documented YouTube delivery example uses an HLS output group and a YouTube upload destination; this output-side workflow does not make the input security group a YouTube access control. • Inspect the channel’s output group and confirm the protocol and destination configured for the workflow.
  • Compare the configured ingest destination with the current ingest details for the YouTube event. Do not reuse an old destination without confirming it is still the one assigned to the event.
  • Use the channel and YouTube event status or error to establish whether output is being sent and whether YouTube is accepting it.
  • Do not change an input security group to address a failure that occurs after MediaLive has accepted the upstream input.

Common causes and fixes

What you find Likely issue Next action
RTMP or RTP push connection fails; verified public source IP is absent from the attached group The input security group whitelist does not cover the encoder’s actual egress address Add or adjust the narrow IPv4 CIDR rule for that verified source
The operator checked a private/local encoder address, not the public egress address NAT, firewall, VPN, or routing changes the source address seen by MediaLive Verify the public source IP on the stream’s actual network path
The input is RTMP_PULL or another pull type The connection direction is reversed; MediaLive connects to the source Diagnose the pull source connection rather than treating the input security group as a push-ingress fix
The input is VPC-based VPC networking applies; the MediaLive input security group property is not compatible Check the VPC security group IDs and network path used by the VPC input
MediaLive receives the input, but YouTube does not receive output The problem is on the channel output or YouTube ingest leg Check output group, destination, and current YouTube event ingest details
An attached input cannot be edited while its channel is running The input is not in the required idle-channel edit state Wait for or arrange an idle window, then edit the input

What to collect if the fault remains

  • The exact MediaLive input type and whether it is VPC-based.
  • The AWS account and Region, the input, and the security group attached to it.
  • The encoder’s verified public egress IP and the relevant IPv4 CIDR rules, with sensitive details handled according to your organization’s practices.
  • The exact error and whether the failing direction is encoder-to-MediaLive or MediaLive-to-YouTube.
  • For an output-side fault, the output group/protocol and the current YouTube event ingest status.
