Short answer: To livestream on YouTube, your channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Monetization depends on which YouTube Partner Program (YPP) features you qualify for: some fan-funding and Shopping features have an earlier-access tier, while ad and Premium revenue use a higher threshold. Neither meeting a threshold nor attracting viewers guarantees acceptance or earnings.
How do I start a YouTube livestream?
YouTube lists three streaming routes: mobile, webcam, and encoder. The baseline requirement is a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Mobile has additional eligibility requirements; check YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current details. A computer webcam stream requires a webcam; mobile and encoder streams do not require one.
- Mobile: Start from a supported mobile device if your channel meets YouTube’s additional mobile eligibility conditions.
- Webcam: Use a computer and webcam for a direct camera stream.
- Encoder: Use encoder software or hardware when your production needs an external video or audio setup. YouTube lists this as a streaming route, but the exact encoder settings depend on the equipment and production.
For current setup requirements and route-specific instructions, use YouTube’s official live-streaming guidance. Do not assume a channel is ready just because it can upload videos: live access has its own verification and restriction checks.
How many subscribers do I need to monetize on YouTube?
YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed in 2026, lists the following route for full ad-revenue eligibility. These are entry thresholds, not an automatic acceptance decision.

| Eligibility route | Threshold currently listed by YouTube | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form watch time | 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months | Full ad-revenue eligibility, subject to the rest of YPP requirements and channel review |
| Shorts views | 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Full ad-revenue eligibility, subject to the rest of YPP requirements and channel review |
For the 4,000-hour route, Shorts Feed watch time does not count. Unlisted, deleted, or private videos, ad-campaign watch time, and livestream hours that are not converted to VOD do not count as qualified public watch hours. See YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility requirements for the live rules shown to your channel.
Is there an earlier YPP tier?
Yes. In eligible regions, YouTube lists an earlier-access route for certain fan-funding and Shopping features. It is separate from the full ad-revenue route.
Rank #2
| Earlier-access requirement | One of these activity thresholds | Feature scope |
|---|---|---|
| 500 subscribers and three public uploads in the past 90 days | 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days, or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days | Certain fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to regional availability and each feature’s requirements |
This tier does not provide the same access as the higher Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and Premium eligibility route. Availability varies by region and individual feature. Check YouTube’s monetization feature guidance and the Earn area in YouTube Studio for the options available to your channel.
Does reaching the numbers automatically get a channel into YPP?
No. YouTube reviews eligible channels against its monetization policies. The stated prerequisites also include being in a supported region, having no active Community Guidelines strikes, enabling two-step verification, having access to advanced features, and linking an active AdSense for YouTube account or being ready to set one up in Studio.
Policy compliance matters independently of subscriber and watch-time totals. YouTube applies its monetization policies to Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams, along with applicable advertiser-friendly guidelines. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a format around content that may be reused or otherwise restricted.

Are YouTube monetization requirements changing?
YouTube has announced a change scheduled for February 1, 2027: ad and Premium entry is scheduled to require 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the past year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days. This is announced future policy, not the current threshold described above. YouTube says there are no corresponding eligibility changes for fan funding, Creator Partnerships, or Shopping in that announcement. Check the terms shown in Studio as the effective date approaches and read the YPP changes announcement.
Can livestreams make money, and how much?
For an eligible, monetized channel with the relevant options enabled, YouTube lists advertising, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as livestream revenue options. Pre-roll and display ads are automatically on when monetization is enabled; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. Ads are not guaranteed to serve in every slot, so a live audience does not translate into a guaranteed ad impression or payment.
Rank #4
YouTube describes creator earnings as a share of advertising revenue and explicitly makes no guarantee about how much, or whether, a creator will be paid under the partner agreement. There is no dependable universal rate per view to promise: actual earnings depend on monetization and what happens with the stream’s views and eligible revenue features. For the current options, consult YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and its partner earnings overview.
Can I keep a prerecorded video running as a YouTube livestream?
Yes, a creator can use an encoder route to send a prepared video as a live stream, but that is different from going live from a camera. You remain responsible for having rights to the video and audio and for meeting YouTube’s monetization policies; putting a recording on a live feed does not by itself make it eligible for monetization. Review the channel monetization policies before using prerecorded or reused material.

What is a practical way to grow a YouTube channel?
YouTube’s YPP overview recommends continuing to make original content and points creators to its Creator Tips resources. There is no universal upload schedule or guaranteed growth formula established here. Treat growth as an ongoing learning process rather than a promise of algorithmic reach.
