If OBS holds the last image of a gaming VOD between clips, check the source’s end-of-playback behavior. For separate Media Sources, enable Show nothing when playback ends. For clips that should play one after another, try putting them in a single VLC Video playlist source. VLC must be installed, and the playback setup should be tested with your actual files before you go live.

First, check whether the frozen frame is only in OBS preview

Look at the stream’s outgoing program or make a short private or unlisted test and view it as a viewer. A still image in the OBS preview does not, by itself, establish that YouTube is receiving that same frozen picture. If the viewer test also shows the old frame, troubleshoot the media source and clip transition in OBS.

Stop a separate Media Source from holding its final frame

When each VOD clip has its own OBS Media Source, the source may continue displaying the last frame after playback ends. OBS Project documentation describes Show nothing when playback ends as useful for preventing video files from showing the last frame indefinitely.

  1. In OBS, select the scene containing the clip and click its Media Source in the Sources list.

  2. Open the source’s properties and enable Show nothing when playback ends.

  3. Apply the change, then play the clip through its end. Check whether the source becomes hidden instead of retaining the final image.

This setting addresses what happens when that file ends; it does not make separate sources play seamlessly into one another. If the next clip is in a different source, test the transition and scene behavior directly.

Play multiple clips from one VLC Video playlist

For a sequence of local files, OBS’s VLC Video source lets you place clips in one playlist. OBS documentation says playlist looping is on by default and shuffle is off by default, so the listed order is preserved unless you change the settings. The source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.

Test the full stream path before going live

YouTube recommends testing before an event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use the same clips, scenes, and audio you plan to broadcast.

  • Confirm the playlist order and shuffle setting.

  • Check whether looping should be enabled for the scheduled stream.

  • Watch the end of one clip and the start of the next; listen for a gap as well as checking the picture.

  • Test scene switches if the media source is unloaded or reactivated during the show. OBS warns that Close file when inactive can leave the source temporarily not showing while it reloads; that option is off by default.

  • Use a private or unlisted test stream, or another non-public test, before the scheduled broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test.

Troubleshoot the likely source of the freeze

What you see What to check What to do
The final image stays visible after a separate clip ends The Media Source’s end-of-playback setting Enable Show nothing when playback ends and test the end of the file again.
A clip sequence changes order or repeats unexpectedly Playlist order, shuffle, and looping Arrange the files in the intended order, turn shuffle off for ordered playback, and set looping according to whether the sequence should repeat.
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources Whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
A source briefly disappears after a scene change Whether Close file when inactive is enabled Be aware that reloading can create a short period with no source image. This option is off by default; test scene changes rather than assuming they will be seamless.
The OBS preview is frozen but the viewer test is not Whether the issue is confined to the local preview Judge the outgoing stream with a private test before changing ingestion or encoder settings.
The viewer also sees a freeze between local files The source transition and the actual files Test the playlist approach or the Media Source end behavior with the exact clips. The official documentation does not establish one universal cause for all such freezes.

Do not change unrelated YouTube transport settings as a first fix

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Those are encoding recommendations, not a documented remedy for OBS displaying a file’s last frame. Likewise, YouTube’s HLS requirements—including 1–4 second segment duration and no more than 5 outstanding segments—apply to HLS ingestion. They do not establish a fix for a local OBS media-source transition. Do not adjust HLS settings unless you are actually using HLS ingestion.

FFmpeg’s concat protocol is another technical way to read multiple resources in sequence as one resource; its documentation includes an ffplay example using three MPEG files. It is an alternative playback approach, not a verified drop-in fix for arbitrary codecs or OBS setups.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos or a playlist to run continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix to local OBS clip playback. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
