Use Percy to catch unintended visual changes in your storefront by capturing important pages during automated tests and comparing them with reviewed screenshots (baselines). It adds a visual-regression check to your existing testing; it does not replace functional, payment, accessibility, or customer research. The setup is the same for an Indian storefront as for other sites. Choose pages, viewports, and test data to match your own site and customers rather than assuming Percy’s defaults reflect Indian device usage.
How Percy visual testing works
Percy captures page or component screenshots during a test run, compares them with previously approved baselines, and shows the differences for review. A team can approve an intended design change or ask for a fix when the difference indicates a regression. Builds group snapshots and can connect review status to source control. See Percy’s visual testing overview.
A typical cycle is: create a project, integrate Percy with tests or use its CLI, run a build to create snapshots, inspect the diffs, and approve or fix them. After the initial baseline is accepted, repeat the captures on relevant code changes.
Choose an integration path
Use a test integration for controlled journeys
If your suite already uses a supported framework, capture snapshots at deliberate points in the customer journey. Percy’s integration guide gives Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, and Appium as examples. Percy SDK lets teams add visual snapshots to their own automated tests; BrowserStack SDK is described as a unified route for functional and visual testing. Check the current integration documentation for supported versions and setup details before choosing.

Use the CLI for a quick evaluation or ad-hoc captures
The scriptless CLI path can suit a static site, an unsupported framework, or an initial evaluation. It is less tied to meaningful in-test checkpoints, so use automation when you need screenshots only after a particular state—such as a selected size, applied filter, or populated cart—has been reached. The integration options guide describes the available approaches.
Set up the project and first baseline
- Create a Percy Web project. Create a project for the storefront and decide whether Percy SDK or BrowserStack SDK fits your test setup. Follow the project creation guide.
- Connect source control if you want commit or pull-request context. Link the relevant repository so builds can be associated with changes. Decide which review statuses should matter to your merge workflow.
- Store the project token as a CI secret. The project token is used to upload snapshots. Keep it in your CI provider’s secret store or equivalent environment configuration; do not commit a live token to a public repository or include one in shared example code.
- Select baseline and browser handling deliberately. BrowserStack’s project guide describes Git baselines as recommended for feature-development workflows and Visual Git for QA/SDET automation. Percy’s predefined browser environments offer a lighter route; BrowserStack Automate is an option when you need a wider set of real browser environments. Confirm the supported browser matrix before committing to a test matrix.
- Capture stable customer-visible states. Begin with representative listing/category, product detail, search, cart, checkout, and account states. This is a practical starting selection, not a Percy requirement. Add empty, validation, loading, or error states where they matter to shoppers and can be made deterministic.
- Run and review the initial build. Check that each snapshot shows the intended page and state before accepting the baseline. Percy supports approval at snapshot, group, or build level. Do not auto-approve changes without review.
- Run captures on changes. Use the same capture states and viewport settings for baseline and comparison builds, then review diffs as part of the pull-request or release process.
Plan ecommerce pages and responsive coverage
Prioritize pages by customer journey and risk rather than capturing every URL indiscriminately. A useful first pass is a representative category page, a product with meaningful variant controls, search results, cart, checkout, and account screens. Add a state only when it tests a distinct layout or content condition. A checkout screenshot can reveal layout changes, but it does not prove that an order, payment, tax calculation, or delivery flow works.
Percy configuration defaults to viewport widths of 375px and 1280px and a minimum snapshot height of 1024px. These are configuration defaults, not evidence about Indian shoppers’ device distribution. Choose widths around your storefront’s CSS breakpoints and first-party analytics, and keep them consistent between baseline and comparison builds. The configuration options reference documents these settings.
Keep the capture state repeatable. Wait for critical content, fonts, images, and asynchronous UI to settle before taking a snapshot. Personalized content, rotating banners, live prices, inventory, delivery estimates, timestamps, and randomized promotions can produce noisy diffs. Where appropriate, scope the capture or configure ignored regions/selectors for genuinely variable content. Do not ignore a region whose visual correctness is what you intend to test.
Review diffs without hiding real regressions
- Decide whether the visual change was expected and tied to the code change under review.
- Check for clipping, overlap, broken alignment, missing content, and unintended changes in each selected viewport and browser.
- Approve only intentional, reviewed changes; request a fix when the screenshot exposes a regression.
- Choose who can approve baselines and whether approval status should block a merge. Percy builds can optionally block merges through repository settings.
A diff proves that the rendered image changed; it does not by itself prove that the change is a defect. Linked source-control workflows can put review status in commit or pull-request context. The official overview says free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans include one year of build history; verify current terms before making retention or budget decisions.
What Percy does not establish for an Indian storefront
The documented workflow is general, not India-specific. It does not establish local browser or device market share, regional pricing or availability, data residency, or support for any particular Indian payment provider. Treat the suggested pages and responsive widths as implementation choices for your site. Validate payment behavior, regional rules, and customer needs with the appropriate functional tests, compliance review, and first-party evidence.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a direct screenshot rather than a Percy baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; it can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, or capture PDFs.
For an image capture, replace the target URL as needed and put your API key in the request:

Can Percy replace functional checkout tests?
No. Visual snapshots reveal rendering changes; they do not verify payment processing or order completion.
Best Value
Are 375px and 1280px required Percy widths?
No. They are documented configuration defaults. Set widths to match your breakpoints and audience.
