Choose the PHP integration route

Convert HTML to JPG using the command-line tool
The basic command takes an input file followed by an output file. This example requests JPEG output, a width of 1200 pixels, and quality 90; those settings are starting values, not a measured optimum.

Launch it safely from PHP
When PHP invokes the executable, pass arguments separately with a process API rather than building a shell command by concatenating user-controlled values. Keep input and output paths under application control, check the process exit status, and confirm the output exists and is a valid JPEG. The snippet below illustrates the safe shape of a call; it assumes PHP’s process support is available and that the binary path and input file are controlled by the application.

Set dimensions, quality, and page readiness
Width and cropping
Choose a capture width that matches the intended image layout. The PHP binding documents screenWidth and crop controls for left, top, width, and height. The CLI has width and crop options; its width can act as a guide unless smart width is disabled. Check the resulting dimensions and content rather than assuming the requested width guarantees a particular crop.
JPEG quality
The PHP manual documents a quality default of 94. The CLI accepts an integer quality from 0 through 100. Lower values generally mean stronger JPEG compression and more visible artifacts; compare output at the size and text legibility required by your use case before settling on a value.

The PHP binding exposes a setting to block local-file access. Limit which local resources a rendered page can read, and constrain network access where your deployment allows it. This matters particularly when any part of the HTML or JavaScript comes from a user.

Check Indian-language text and fonts on the server
There is no special India-specific rendering guarantee in the cited wkhtmltoimage documentation. PHP’s binding documentation describes UTF-8 as the default encoding when none is specified, while the project notes that fontconfig and freetype affect runtime behavior. Neither reference certifies fidelity for Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, or another script on a particular host.

- Serve or generate HTML with UTF-8 consistently, and include an appropriate charset declaration.
- Install the same fonts the page relies on in the server or container image; a browser on your workstation may have fonts absent from production.
- Render representative text in the target scripts, including conjuncts, vowel marks, punctuation, and mixed Latin and Indian-language text.
- Inspect long names, addresses, and localized labels for clipping, unexpected wrapping, or incorrect crops.
- Verify that external stylesheets, images, and fonts are reachable from the rendering environment.
Test in the actual deployment image and inspect the generated JPG; documentation alone cannot establish how a particular host and font combination will render.
Deployment, compatibility, and security
The wkhtmltopdf project lists 0.12.6 as its stable series and dates that release June 11, 2020. Its downloads page explains that packages are distribution-specific and that runtime behavior depends on libraries including libc, fontconfig, and freetype. A static Qt build still relies on system packages; generic binaries can fail across libc variants, and Alpine uses musl rather than glibc. Check the project downloads page for the package and compatibility information relevant to your host. The age of the listed stable series makes it important to verify your security and maintenance requirements before adopting it for a new production service; the cited material does not establish that the project is discontinued.
The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Sanitization is not a complete sandbox. Keep conversion inputs controlled, restrict filesystem and network access where possible, limit process permissions and resource consumption, and avoid shell interpolation of untrusted values.
